Leopard killed after mauling six in India

Officers shot and killed a leopard after it strayed into a village and attacked six people in West Bengal, India, according to media reports.

The leopard attacked a woman and two men, The Australian reported.

People in the densely populated slum village of Prakash Nagar climbed onto rooftops as forestry officers pursued the big cat and vice versa, Sky News reported. Several attempts to tranquilize it failed.

Things seemed to calm down after the leopard sought refuge in bushes, but it leaped out at three officers, Sky News reported. An officer finally wounded the animal, and it later died at a veterinary clinic.

One forestry officer was reported critically injured.

Reason for this is – the order from top was to capture the Leopard live – dont hurt it 🙂

I have relatives that have several leopards, cougars, and siberian tigers. While we give them their respect, realizing they are not house cats, they do not go around attacking folks, and we don't let folks provoke them. Yet any wild animal will attack when provoked, or their habitat is encroached upon. So I'm absolutely sure there is another side to this story. Those peaceful, animal loving folks in India, as some of those posting on here, have been filmed capturing large cats in cages, and setting them on fire to burn alive. The way I see it, is the cat was evening the score.

The leopard was likely sick to attack people unprovoked. We are not natural prey for that animal.

You are "likely sick" to actually believe that. The animal is trying to protect it domain from idiot humans who watch another man get bitten by a leopard and stand there with guns at their sides.

How interesting. I'm sure where you live, they haven't displaced the natural environment at all huh? You must live freely amongst the wildlife and care for and sustain them. The fact of the matter is chief, these villagers were all trying to carve out a little niche for themselves like you and me. If it's their fault that a leopard was killed then it's ALL of our faults as well. Why would you root for an animal to maul men, women, and children? This is a tragedy all the way around, but it's a sign-o-the-times. Expect more animal attacks and 3rd world responses like this in the future.

How sad. People inured, some badly and a leopard killed.

    This is most unusual.

Leopards don't usually get this close to people, they prefer their solitude.

I fear the leopard was ill somehow, hopefully not with rabies. It was either terribly hungry or it was trying to protect its young. No mentioned of motive as yet.

What a shame they could not successfully tranquilize it.

    To their credit, they tried.

This looks to be your standard run of the mill leopard. In case you were unaware, (atleast in africa) there are more leopards than all of the other big cats combined. The reason you dont see them often is they are very good at hiding and are nocturnal for the most part. Snow leopards and amir leopards are a different story though.

CNN, have you ever read the comments on your articles? They're so off-topic and full of ridiculousness that they serve no purpose other than to flame peoples' prejudice, anger, and ignorance. You really should just stop letting people comment – their opinions honestly are best not heard.

Lol the people who kill so many animals are talking about protecting an amimal that attacks human. Second, the same people are the biggest consumers of stuff made from protected animals. Its just irony the same people cry foul when an animal attacking humans is taken off. Like they make strict drug laws but at the same time are the biggest consumers of drug. The westerners came to India 150 years ago and almost wiped out tigers, lions and leopards. The same people now try to claim higher moral ground. I love the American ideals, but sadly people here don't live up to that ideals. Hate everyone who is not american and look down every non-american seems to be their ideals.

You don't know us, so it's not valid to lump us in with Europeans who colonized India 150 years ago. Morals DO change, hopefully for the better. According to the article, it would seem the officials tried to do the right thing by tranquilizing the animal but it failed and that's a shame. But I hope it brings to light the urgent need for greater protection for humans AND forest animals and to reduce human encroachment on wild land–we've claimed more than enough of it already.

What a horribly written article. The first paragraph states the leopard attacked 6 people. The very next line says it attacked a woman and 2 men. That's 3 people, not 6. Which is it?

Maybe you should finish reading the article or at least process what you read, later on in the article it says the leopard jumped out and attacked 3 officers. Simple math for you: 3 locals+3 officers= 6 people! 😀
