Leopard killed after mauling six in India

Officers shot and killed a leopard after it strayed into a village and attacked six people in West Bengal, India, according to media reports.

The leopard attacked a woman and two men, The Australian reported.

People in the densely populated slum village of Prakash Nagar climbed onto rooftops as forestry officers pursued the big cat and vice versa, Sky News reported. Several attempts to tranquilize it failed.

Things seemed to calm down after the leopard sought refuge in bushes, but it leaped out at three officers, Sky News reported. An officer finally wounded the animal, and it later died at a veterinary clinic.

One forestry officer was reported critically injured.

The Americans seems to be heading in wrong direction. India as young nation has evolved and is evolving into better nation. All the social ills and evils that some prejudice people are pointing to are becoming rare rather than norms. Pollution? Guess which country is the biggest polluter? If we look at America, its going in the other direction with rise of social evils and hatred towards non americans. Racism, intolerance and hatred towards other humans is rampant in USA. The traditional American values are becoming rare.

It is the leopard's fault for people invading its natural habitat.

Ever heard of a tranquilizer gun!?!? You build your cities in thier habitat and kill it because it feels like it's protecting itself. I hope one of those six people died in that mauling. Eye for an eye!

Doesn't this reveal a bigger problem? If the leopard are coming into the villages there may be a shortage of prey in the wilderness...and she would surely risk it if she is trying to feed her young.

Via Wiki: Most healthy leopards prefer wild prey to humans, but injured, sickly, or struggling cats with a shortage of regular prey may resort to hunting humans and become habituated to it.

The worse this situations gets, the more a problem it becomes for the general population. Obviously, you can't let you kids go and out play is there a leopard problem in the neighborhood....

I can absolutely 100% guarantee you that there is a shortage of prey in that area. It is truly pathetic how many species we're driving to extinction because of our own inability to control our populations.

They should have tranquilized it and released it in Pakistan.

So very strange to hear people cry, "there are too many of us" as if their own existence isn't called into question with complaints like that. How does that solve anything? People in the US wiped out and continue to destroy the environment around them including natural predators. If you live in a house, in a neighborhood, in a city -you can bet that millions of animals lost their lives and land for your existence. Just because you can't see it on YouTube, doesn't mane that it didn't happen. What gives anyone the right to tell people in another land that they shouldn't defend themselves? That they shouldn't exist? Ridiculous.

The forestry guys gets a "FAIL" stamp. And I wouldn't be surprised if one of the locals had something to do with the animal escaping. That leopard skin is actually worth big money on the black market and their already living in low poverty, so there's your motive.

I agree... just feel bad for the leopard. People are stupid. They should've tranquilized it, not killed it. Poor thing. It was probably hungry and scared to death.

Everyone acts so surprised when a wild animal attacks. Both leopards and tigers are endangered in India due to the simple fact that their habitat is being encroached on by humans. This holds true for bear and cougar attacks here in the states also. The animals are being forced into a smaller and smaller bit of territory, and when they do come upon humans the reaction is either territorial or driven by hunger because prey animals are also going away. The exponential human population growth is a death sentance for animals. When will people ever realize that they are not the most important things alive on this planet? Maintain sanctuaries, defend endangered species.

Absolutely correct. Human population growth is this planet's greatest problem. Predators need large areas to roam and their habitats are being taken away by human excesses. We need men to get vasectomies and governments to stop giving people incentives to have more kids.

I agree 100%... humans are too stupid to control their own population, so it's only natural for animals to attack for food. When we're gone, they'll be SO glad.

Shameful. This was bungled from the start, as they obviously had inadequate sedative for the animal's size and state of agitation. That leopard should not have died. I'm sorry that people in the "slum" were harmed, but the cat would have panicked when it found itself trapped and a mob of people ran at it and started throwing things at it. My sympathy lies with the leopard. What a waste of a beautiful, seriously endangered animal.

Yes, it is sad. Sad to see people being hurt and sad to see a beautiful animal, who is just trying to survive, killed.

I realize it was pandemonium but look at the angle of the rifle barrell as the shooter on top of the van kills the
cat and his associate directly below and behind them. A wild shot could well have claimed a human life too.

It only attacked because it was scared. Rightfully so, look what the outcome was... it was shot.
As human populations expand and encroach on lands that wildlife belong to, there will inevitably be conflict. Humans and human expansion is ultimately the main reason for this phenomena. Here's a solution:
introduce the condom into Indian cultures.

I agree that there are far too many people, and too many of the people who have been birthed cannot write a sentence well enough to get a job requiring real literacy.
See an example in a post above: the attempted formation of the plural of "god" resulted in the writing of "god's."
Our current economy is partially the result of overly fecund, and overly encouraged, breeding of humans from a gene pool that supplies only those barely capable of voting and signing a welfare check, and now there's a movement to let them print their signatures.
Beethoven died just after saying, "what the world needs is more light."
Perhaps I shall die after exclaiming, "what the world needs is more leopards!"
