Leopard killed after mauling six in India

Officers shot and killed a leopard after it strayed into a village and attacked six people in West Bengal, India, according to media reports.

The leopard attacked a woman and two men, The Australian reported.

People in the densely populated slum village of Prakash Nagar climbed onto rooftops as forestry officers pursued the big cat and vice versa, Sky News reported. Several attempts to tranquilize it failed.

Things seemed to calm down after the leopard sought refuge in bushes, but it leaped out at three officers, Sky News reported. An officer finally wounded the animal, and it later died at a veterinary clinic.

One forestry officer was reported critically injured.

At least some humans here still have enough common sense to realize that human life is more important than that of lower animals.
However, we are producing far too many humans, and we are doing it for the wrong reasons.

"Lower" animals? What exactly makes us more valuable than them? Because we are smarter? Because we pollute more and exhaust our resources more? Because we are greedier and more selfish? The arrogance of your statement is amazing.

What's the basis for your statement that human life is more important than animal life? According to whom? By what standard. Humans are a massive threat to this planet and are causing the largest mass extinction event of other species EVER seen on our planet, greater even than that caused by meteors. We're killing everything and heating up the planet beyond hope.

There are SIX BILLION of us. I'd say that one leopards' life is EASILY worth a few MILLION people.

I totally disagree and think your statement that human life is somehow more important is ridiculous.

Maybe the Forestry Officer would have fared better if we weren't wearing flip flops while fighting a leopard! As for saying that an animal life shoud never come before an animals?! The world is way imbalanced–too many humans, not enough room for animals.

RIGHT ON, BROTHER! I love how these backwards, under-developed nations cannot properly equip their government officials. I've travelled a lot, and constantly see police, park rangers, and other officials who don't have what we in the US would consider the most basic equipment...it's ridiculous.

Wow – its amazing to see every other comment is a racist one. How about we feed these racists to leopards – takes care of two problems.

This all could have been avoided if they had just given the kiddy what he wanted: a hug. It is clear from the pictures that he is just trying to give us a hug.

The picture doesn't convey the dynamics. The big cat appeared out of nowhere and caught them all by surprise. They're professional stalkers. It probably arrived, surveyed, targeted and jumped all in a fraction of a second. Then they're also well camouflaged, and in the bright sunny & dusty area (unlike in these artificially enhanced photographs) they are hard to spot in real time.

Sad,but makes me think we would be more humble if we had natural predators in this country. Not the ones we have now,of course, but real animal ones.

Which natural predator would you be talking about. Grizzly, Mountain Lion, Cougar, Jaguar, Grey Wolf.....One of these types maybe.

Move west of the Rocky Mountains – we have predators and it's fun.
Nothing like having a bear in your backyard when you wake up in the morning.
You yell at them, make a lot of noise and they run away, nothing about it that makes you humble.

You have to be face to face with a bear practically before its much of a threat. A leopard on the other hand can f uck you up no matter where you are practically unless its behind thick double plated glass.

Mike, a mountain lion and cougar are the same thing. They are also referred to as pumas, catamounts and panthers.

Where I come from we are scared to death of the wild animals in our backyards. We have the gray squirrel and the sparrow. Those little mothers can peck your eyes out !

"It is a shame such a rare and beautiful animal had to be put down just to save or protect the lives of slum dwellers"
