Leopard killed after mauling six in India

Officers shot and killed a leopard after it strayed into a village and attacked six people in West Bengal, India, according to media reports.

The leopard attacked a woman and two men, The Australian reported.

People in the densely populated slum village of Prakash Nagar climbed onto rooftops as forestry officers pursued the big cat and vice versa, Sky News reported. Several attempts to tranquilize it failed.

Things seemed to calm down after the leopard sought refuge in bushes, but it leaped out at three officers, Sky News reported. An officer finally wounded the animal, and it later died at a veterinary clinic.

One forestry officer was reported critically injured.

      That was very insightful, indeed.

  2. Reality Check

It's too bad that people in such slums can't stop their excessive population growth. They are increasingly infringing on the habitats of forest animals and destroying the environment. India has 10% of the forest cover it had in 1900. Once such creatures acquire a taste for humans they simply can't be left in the wild. However, the animal control authorities in India are incompetent and ill-trained. This animal could have ended up in a zoo or other such environment. Most of the people posting here don't have the education or field experience in India to understand the issue firsthand. There are no simple solutions to the "turf war" between human beings and the rest of the animal kingdom. Mountain lions attack people in the Western states of the U.S. as well so the "third world" argument only holds water to a point.

The law of the jungle is if you can out compete it you can take over its territory. Brush up on your biology. The humans could kill the leopard here because well the leapard wasn't strong enough.

Yes many parts of India are desperately poor. Thats why they diddnt bother trying to take a man eating leopard captive so they can send it to a zoo in the US.

So what you are suggesting is for them not to do what we do in the United States.

Also you suggest that they stop having babies while you do as you please in the United States.

How insightful. I have no idea why this problem hasn't been solved yet with such easy brilliant ideas out there!

      @ccaze

The United States has a population of about 350 million and has the 3rd largest land mass. Russia is the largest followed by Canada. India on the other has a population of 1.7 BILLION and is the 7th largest in land mass. WE all need to slow down population growth. However India is by far the worst offender. Followed closely by China.

Declare Holy War on these infidels for killing of our god.

Now let us go out for burgers next.

FAIL – God's cannot be killed. If something can be killed, it's clearly not a GOD.

India is a beautiful country, at least they try to return it to the wild vs the US which is kill kill kill. Last week a kid in CO got bit in the toe and the idiot officials killed a bear "that matched the description". I do feel bad what happened to the leopard and the men, too bad they weren't successful at returning it to the wild.

The news item has been mis-quoted. It was actually returned to wild and not killed. Please fix this post.

Did they return it to the wild? That's great. I wish we were more like India and not seek revenge on wild animals, it's so nutty.

The pics provided suggests this whole operation was a half-assed attempt that went south fast. Too bad the leopard didn't get away. Shoot those living in the slums, they're the problem. Either that or neuter them.

Heartbreaking photos. Wondering why the photographer keep shooting pix and not attempting the help the men nearby. It's a beautiful animal, but it's a good thing he was killed before mauling any other humans in the vicinity.

  10. Reality Check

Donna: The U.S. could stand to lose more blue-collar jobs if more Americans would turn off the TV and return to university and become better educated. This country should focus on ultra-high-tech manufacturing but it can't because there are simply not enough scientists and engineers here. That's why so many educated people from countries in regions like Asia end up coming here to work. Americans want their technologically advanced toys but they are too lazy to go to school to learn how to make this stuff. They want their gardens tended to properly, their cars tuned up, and their houses cleaned but they're too lazy to do this stuff themselves now. Thus illegal immigration thrives. Don't preach ignorant economic analyses when you are part of the problem yourself Donna. Go back to your bingo night, your Big Mac, and your box of Oreos and bore yourself to death while this country struggles. You are an exemplar of the problem and the reason why jobs are going away.

"failed to tranquilize" So were they not not skilled enough hit the cat or did they have darts that were not filled with tranquilizer?

Then is goes on to say it was finally wounded... nice they were using a real gun and couldn't put it down humanely?

Too bad the cat wasn't able to kill one of those dopes.

A simple shot to the orbital of the animal would have dropped it like a sack of potatoes. Probably best to just stand there while an animal mauls your friend. I had a friend like that once.
