Leopard killed after mauling six in India

Officers shot and killed a leopard after it strayed into a village and attacked six people in West Bengal, India, according to media reports.

The leopard attacked a woman and two men, The Australian reported.

People in the densely populated slum village of Prakash Nagar climbed onto rooftops as forestry officers pursued the big cat and vice versa, Sky News reported. Several attempts to tranquilize it failed.

Things seemed to calm down after the leopard sought refuge in bushes, but it leaped out at three officers, Sky News reported. An officer finally wounded the animal, and it later died at a veterinary clinic.

One forestry officer was reported critically injured.

I am seeing lot of comments on population here. I think this is not relevant topic for that. But I would like to make a comment for some morons out there commenting on india and china population. First of all India and China are too old that no historian ever predicted when these civilizations started. Second US is third high populated country in the world with 350 million people and its only 450 years old. Think about stats before you make foolish comments about india and china population.

The age of the country in comparison it’s population is nonsensical. G00gle South Sudan, the world’s newest country. By your logic they should have the lowest population on Earth. You can come up with an excuses you want.. the numbers are the numbers.

      World Population 6,932,100,000

      China – 1,339,724,852 19.33%

      India – 1,210,193,422 17.46%

      U.S.A – 311,792,000 4.5%

The real reason for high populations in India & China is bcoz of less hash climatical conditions and they mastered the art of growing 4 crops in a year. South China and 3/4 of India is tropical and warm temperate zone and very fertile valley with snow fed rivers.

A billion Indians and probably <5000 leopards on Earth, and the leopard is killed.

That's pretty messed up man. Just because there are a billion Indians doesn't mean that their lives are worth less than any of ours. If it was attacking your family or friends you would probably be singing a different song, oh but wait, there are 308 million Americans, so who cares right? It looks like they tried their best to capture the leopard safely, but had to resort to killing it. I would imagine if a leopard was running at you fully intent on killing you and you had a gun, you would do the same thing.

Leopards can be incredibly efficient man-eaters. This story is talking about 6 people wounded but early in the 20th century they were a much bigger threat. One Leopard (The Panar Leopard) killed 400 people over a few years, another leopard over 250 people. They would terrorize entire districts of India for years. Anyone interested should check out Jim Corbett's books on Amazon.com. I recommend Man-eaters of Kumaon & The man-eating leopard of Rudraprayag. Mind blowing true stories mainly about tigers and leopards.

Seriously? Law of the jungle is if you can kill it then it can't kill you. Also if you can out compete it you can take over its territory.

I don't understand people like this, did they lose their survival instinct? I take it if you were in India and your family got mauled you would be like "well its ok, we're overpopulated", I sincerely doubt that.

The reason this happend is because Indians are breeding out of control and taking more and more habitat away from the precious big cats. This leapard probably had nowhere else to go and was only defending himself. They should be ashamed of themselves for killing this gorgeous animal. There are more than enough Indians and not nearly enough of these leapards in the wild. This just breaks my heart!

So you don't consider Indians as human beings? What if these people were your family members.. but hey, there are way more people than we need so why don't we just kill your family off and save the leopard.
