A malfunctioning forklift dropped 462 cases of wine in Australia on Thursday, a spill with a price tag of more than $1 million.
The 5,544 bottles of 2010 Mollydooker Velvet Glove shiraz, with a price tag of $185 a bottle, fell almost 20 feet to ground of a wharf in Port Adelaide as the forklift was loading it for shipment abroad, according to media reports.
"We just couldn't believe it," winemaker Sparky Marquis said in a report on Adelaide Now. "As you can imagine, this wine is our pride and joy. To see it accidentally destroyed, and not consumed, has left us all a bit numb.
"The container manager said that when his team came and told him what had happened, he was looking around for cameras to see if it was a 'gotcha' hoax. He realised it was serious when nobody was laughing," Adelaide Now quotes Marquis as saying.
Marquis told ABC.net that only one carton among the 462 was undamaged. His staff was searching through the others to see if any other bottles may have escaped.
"All of the bottles are in the cool store and we're just having to go through every single bottle, check it first of all to see if it has any cap seal damage to it, in which case it just gets immediately discarded," ABC.net quotes him as saying.
The lost wine represents a third of his company's output for a year.
Brett McCarthur of Kerry Logistics, the company which operated the forklift, told Adelaide Now his company moves tens of thousands of heavy containers each year.
"We move hundreds of pallets a day filled with sand and even stuff that it wouldn't matter if you dropped it from 50 feet in the air, but the only premium container had to be the one," McCarthur was quoted as saying.
Marquis said he was working with insurers to get compensated for his loss.
Ha ha!
Sparky Marquis!!! AWESOME NAME
I have paid that much (and more) and yes it was worth it. Why do people take vacations to Hawaii when they can sit in their bath tubs with a sun lamp?
Small price to pay for avoiding the risk of death by electrocution? Just a guess.
Your stupid.
What about my stupid? You did not express a complete sentence.
Jackson, you're smart.
The scenery's better.
jackson 5 was a good band
Rufus is stoopid..
PAH
Wow where do I find a remaining bottle as surely it will be a serious collector's addition. For those who believe there is no difference between a $2-$3 wine and an $185.00 dollar you have surely never tasted the $185.00 version or you would no how ridiculous a comment that is. Wish I had been there with a cup in hand and filter, as such a sad waste of a wondrous substance.
You know? I envy people who have a sense of smell and taste. I have neither in great supply. No smell, but I can only taste the basics. I am fairly sure I coould not tell the difference, now how much you trained me. I will never know. ;(
Again and again blind taste tests have fool 'wine experts' in picking cheap wines as more expensive ones. I understand this isn't always the case but the price tag on the way does not make the wine good.
If you have actually ever tasted any bottle from this Vineyard, you would understand why the price is what it is! BTW-Velvet Glove a 100 point wine-not many ever achieve this kind of rating! Even their lower-priced wines far exceed any that are comparably priced!
My monocle just fell out due to my apoplexy!
Why don't we tax these expensive wines in the US to close the obscene budget deficit. If they can afford a 200 dollar bottle of wine sure they can afford a 20-30 dollars surcharge.
Because that's not FAIR! There are plenty of things plenty of people could afford, that doesn't make it fair. We could take away cell phones from people on food stamps and force them to pay that money to the government too.
One Million dollars? Forget wine.. Do you know how much crack that would buy?!
I love that your comment doesn't get filtered but mine does because it speaks volumes about people who drink wine...
I never drink Coca Cola in my childhood until I become 14 years old and by accident..........Not because I didnt want but because we didnt have any back in Cuba. Until a truck full of tank turn upside down by accident in the road.
It wasn't a few bottles of $1000 a bottle wine or anything. I mean, yeah $185 a bottle is a lot but it isn't priceless or really that rare. This story merits a big MEH.
There is a big difference between a $10 and $30 bottle of wine. It's like saying all coffee roasters are the same and that all whiskeys are the same. There is B&B furniture from italy and matching sofa's, love seats and tables from Bob's......you take your pick and you choose the width of your palette.
Why don't they store that on the bottom shelf??
Holy Alcohol Abuse Batman!!!
Lol 😀
I really can't feel sorry for them. No drink is worth that much money (except medicine, maybe). You're just an a**hole if you spend that much on a drink.
Glad someone else agrees... $1,000,000 on wine? It's worth $185 a bottle if your willing to pay for it... I wouldn't pay $1 a bottle for it... then again I don't drink juice from spoiled fruit.
@ Josh and DA...stick to what you know and enjoy your lives. Comment at large: It would be best and proper to not denigrate anyone on the basis of their palate or size of their pocketbook. There are a lot of good wines (and other products) to be found at all price ranges. If you like it...buy it and fele good about yourself. Some are capable of knowing and appreciating subtle nuances. Some cannot. Some simply don't care enough to try. And then you have the economists...is it really worth it? At that point it becomes a (personal) value judgment. There is no right or wrong there, unless you use your "values" to judge others.
Uh, maybe the problem was that the forklift was trying to carry 462 cases of wine?!?
Haha, seriously. Even if there was a 99.99% chance nothing bad would happen you'd still be insane to put 1/3 of a whole years output on one load.
Ummm Maybe they were handling a shipping container and not a pallet. These containers are the size of large trucks. And the forklifts they speak of could lift your house.
I don't carry all my insulin (diabetic) in the same piece of luggage when I travel... some goes in carry on - some goes in sto-away... same concept... if you drink enough wine it just makes sense... same reason why the Vice President and President never travel together but on seperate planes.
