Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London on Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.
The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.
But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.
The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that many considered a throwback to the Motown sound.
She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back to Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
But there was trouble.
Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years marked by drug addiction and arrests.
Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.
"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps - not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."
What a waste...
of drugs and booze.
She was a train wreck waiting to happen. I knew it wouldn't be long to crash and burn. I feel bad for her family but they, too, must have known she wouldn't live a full life.
RIP Ms. Winehouse. You are now at peace.
Rachel: interesting how you leave such a petty, nasty comment, then follow it with a RIP. Judge much?
RIP Amy. The devil won out
Welcome to the club Amy, I knew you weren't a quitter!
Drugs are bad, mmmmkay...
She should have gone to rehab but said no no no...hopefully Lindsay will be next...
ya one can only hope
Easy to judge those with an addiction, isn't it? Your comment reveals a lack of impulse control. Is the irony lost on you?
lack of impulse control? lol i have no sympathy for drug addicts sorry...its the ones that could survive it and recover that win...the rest are losers
cadecker: Your sense of compassion for those less perfect than you is really, really inspiring. You must be a pillar of your community, loved by all I am sure. Now, don't you have some kittens to drown? A puppy to kick?
sad
No. The massacre in Norway was sad. This woman throwing her life away is just disgusting.
First!
Another member of the 27 club. It doesn't say it...but i'm sure it was suicide.
Wow. Wasted talent. RIP Amy.
Take note, "recreational" drug users.
I will take my harmless recreational marijuana, it is the hard drug and alcohol users that should take note.
What a damn shame.
FIRST! How sad, only 27. Guess she didnt want to go back to rehab...
it is sad, and you're not first.
Okay, anyone here not see that coming?
Color me shocked.
Is that like a chartreuse?
Your demon's we never under control but your Music will live on for a long time..
