Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London on Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.
The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.
But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.
The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that many considered a throwback to the Motown sound.
She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back to Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
But there was trouble.
Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years marked by drug addiction and arrests.
Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.
"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps - not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."
Totally unfortunate death!
I hope other celebrities learn from this. Fame isn't everything. Having a strong support unit like family is very important. Learn it from Britney Spears.
R.i.p Amy!
Unfortunately people with such great talent do take life for granted! That's so ashamed!!
wow. profound.
So sad, so young and talented, such a tortured soul. RIP Amy.
Wow. Awful. She had the most interesting sound of any female singer out there recently. With all the interchangeable Beyonces and Brittneys out there now, she was one of the few originals.
Totally agree. She was young, too- my age exactly.
Her singing made me want to put a fork in my eye. Anyway, she's dead and I feel terrible for her parents, who are no doubt crushed.
Interchangeable Britneys, fine, but Beyonces? I know this isn't the place, but C'MON! Bey is original. But yes, this dear woman was also original. It's such a shame she couldn't overcome her battle with addiction.
why is this even news when anyone could have seen this coming a mile away? she acted like she was cool because she did drugs and lived the fast life and hey guess what now your dead....fun
@ matt K you have no idea what went on in her head. as if anyone has ever heard of Matt K and anything you've ever done. what a joke you are, dude! please do use a favor and stop taking up space. LOL
Agree with u. It should have been just a news not a breaking news. Why we hail the people whom their life is/was a bad one. What about the influence that these people (could) have in kids mind and lifestyle, ha!?
RIP Ms. Winehouse
This is what happends when an artist has a hit song that says "They tried to take me to rehab and I said.. NO NO NO" Looks like you needed rehab huh Amy? That's why you should of stuck with weed.
Thank you. With your mocking of the recently behind the safety of anonymity, your uncreative reference to her music to get a laugh, your use of "should of" instead of "should have" and your extremely clumsy injection of a pro-marijuana statement where one didn't need to be made, you've shown (in a very concise manner, I might add–great job) why the internet is leading to the down fall of civilization. Many people have posted stupid things in this comments section, but yours stands head and shoulders above the others.
Such an extraordinary talent and a great loss. This is so unbelievably devastating. May she rest in peace.
An addiction is hard to cure, it is a disease and Amy was ill with this. Had she just turned to Jesus she may have found peace. God be with your family now. RIP Amy.
I'm sorry but Amy was Jewish... Jesus wouldn't of helped
As a recovering addict, I can tell you that you never "get over" being an addict. The best you can do is to keep it at bay. I started drinking when I was 12, graduated to drugs at 16, and finally got clean and sober three years ago (at 47). I know that my next binge is just a drink away, so I work my program every day. Complacency is what kills.
I loved her music, Its such a shame this kind of tragic happens when young people get in to drugs and drinks,. I wish God could of pulled her throught. He must have other plans for her up above. What a short life here on earth. Amie I no you are in a better place no more pain or suffering. Peace be with your family and friends at this time
Another talented performer lost to drug abuse, what a shame..
never heard her music....but she was in the news a lot....waisted talent.
another 27 member
Jim Morrison, Hendrix, Joplin... were there more that I've missed?
Very despondent news about a very sad young lady. Amy was clinically diagnosed at age 23 with bipolar disorder. She declared she would never take medication to control her disease, why? She self medicated by smoking crack to the point that her lungs were only working at 70% capacity. Something needs to change worldwide with laws regarding parent's rights and medical decisions made by young adult children who have known or emerging mental health conditions.
Sad. I was hoping she could turn things around for herself. R.I.P.
