Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London on Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.
The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.
But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.
The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that many considered a throwback to the Motown sound.
She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back to Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
But there was trouble.
Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years marked by drug addiction and arrests.
Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.
"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps - not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."
Drug use and that life opens one up to demonic possession and it killed her. So sad.
We all can point at other people's flaws n blame them for their mistakes but we all hav our demons. Hope urs doesn't kill u. RIP
Ms. Winehouse had a disease, a serious illness called addiction. Ever heard of this? Find out about it before you go throwing stones and judging.
But unlike other fatal diseases, addition is behaviour based. I've known people with coronary disease who have changed their eating, drinking, smoking, and exercise habits and have licked the disease. She obviously was not interested in living to see the age of 30, and allowed her self-inflicted disease to own her. We call overcoming adversity manning-up. Don't cry about your problems – fix them.
yes Paul, but unlike coronary disease, addiction is a *mental* disease. The behavior is just a result of the disease. Of course with any "behavioral based" disorder, you can just change the way you act, and everything is fixed. But something is *mentally* impaired with addicts, which prevents them from making that change as non-addicts would, which is the base of the disease itself. By the way, I'm no recovering addict, nor a loved one of an addict... just someone in the medical field.
Is anyone shocked?

I sincerely hope "Rehab" does not experience a renaissance off this tragedy
Same though here but kids will see this as a good thing
Dan, I bet you call yourself a Christian, dont you?
Don't bring Christians into this. A real follower if Christ would never say something like that. Don't be ignorant.
Shoulda smoked weed like a normal person.
thats funny.
Rest in peace Amy, you were a Godsend to our talentless culture. As for all you sick, callous, disgusting people you need to be ashamed of yourself. The just died. You people are remorseless and have no soul or fear of kharma. If you can say all these things out in the open, what would you do if you had an actual child in this same predicament. You probably let them die the same way. You are some sick sorry excuses for human beings. I will not even class you among sewer rats and vermin.
News flash – all people die. Some young, some old, some tragically, some by accident. It happens. Some of us just have little sympathy for those who squander their talent, or in her case, what little talent she had. Like many people today, she was famous for being famous for being a junkie. I do not think that in a year people will look upon her music and bemoan her fate. They may not even remember her name.
What a shame; rest in peace, Amy. I hope her sad story may convince some to never try drugs; some of us are addicted from the first time we try certain drugs. I've truly never inhaled, because I think I'd find it very hard not to do it again. Nicotine was hard enough to quit before I was 30, and I didn't want another monkey on my back.
A "through-back"? Nice editing
I know right?! I saw that too......CNN editors leave a lot to be desired, as of late.
Lindsay Lohan will never be a member of the 27 Club. She can't sing or play a musical instrument.
Your opinions carry about the same value as your first name!
No one saw this coming. Where were the warning signs? If only we could have known she needed help.
So what is your inane point? I was still shocked, and very saddened, even though I had the feeling this would be the outcome. It's bad enough having a monkey on your back, but add obnoxious critics who attack your every move, it only adds to your depression and sorrow. Another talent gone.
There was a terrorist attack in Norway and a great famine in the horn of Africa.
Who cares about some junkie celebrity?
Gee genius. Think that one up yourself? No one ever comes up with that EVERY article! Bravo!! Come back and favor us with some more enlightenment.
I couldn't agree more. I'm personally sickened that our society shifts so much wealth to entertainers and jocks, too many of whom provide an example to young minds of endless excess, irresponsibility, and self-destructive recklessness. I'm deeply saddened that this sick human being destroyed herself, but can't help but be happy that her influential example of personal behavior has thus ended.
Yes, but I personally like news sources that cover it all. Thanks.
They might learn from this situation, but not from your remarks!
Sad but not a big surprise. I honestly thought it would have been sooner
Sad thing is everyone knew but did little
When you have famous addict such as her, the people making money off her do not care about her they just care she keeps making them all money, now of course the producers, record exec's, lawyers, etc.etc. will come out and say how much they loved her and tried to help her and it's very sad. The only think they are sad about is their cash cow going away
