Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London on Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.
The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.
But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.
The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that many considered a throwback to the Motown sound.
She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back to Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
But there was trouble.
Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years marked by drug addiction and arrests.
Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.
"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps - not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."
eesh. 🙁
So sad. Yes many did see this coming, but I was truly hoping this time she would turn it around. Sigh* Addiction is a beast to get rid of.
too bad...Take heed kids...drugs kill.
Why does this not surprise me in the least?
Wow, you must be psychic because no one saw this coming.
Tragic
RIP Amy....you and your AMAZING voice will be missed.
Really sad. I was always hoping she would clean herself up and put out more great music.
Too much phucken coke
Does tat mean my Amy WInehouse CDs are finally worth something?
A sad waste of talent!
Looks like the "27 Club" just got a new member. How sad.
Just saying the return of saturn strikes again. Another 27 year old dead.
how old is LiLo?
damn shame....
so tragic. r.i.p.
Before all the sick, "serves her right", "drug head" comments begin to flood this board, may I just say on behalf of those of us with some compassion, "Rest in peace, Amy. Our thoughts are with your family and friends during this difficult time. Condolences for your painful loss".
Nice. Thank u for this post.
Well said and nice to hear your kind words. My thoughts too are with the family and friends.
Glad to see someone on this board has some class.
Very well said. RIP Amy.
Are you going to post a "RIP" to EVERY SINGLE individual for Norway? You should learn each and every name. It's only fair, right?
Oh, kings, why be so petty and ridiculous? Everyone here knew her music and have read about her or have even seen her in concert (I even once had an encounter with her at a local Starbucks), so why be jerk. You want to leave condolences for the tragic victims in Oslo, then go to those numerous articles and do so there. In other words... just go away.
Sad, but we can't say we didn't see this coming.
