Singer Amy Winehouse found dead, UK press says

Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London on Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.

The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.

But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.

The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that many considered a throwback to the Motown sound.

She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back to Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.

But there was trouble.

Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll  on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years marked by drug addiction and arrests.

Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.

"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps - not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."

What a jerk. This is someone's child. You obviously don't know the feeling of loss when a child dies. Hope you never do.

This is sad news. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family and true friends. They have lost someone that they loved unconditionally.

You are stoned if you think this woman deserves any sympathy. She has been offered so much help, plus she was loaded and still wouldn't get real help? Enough was enough. When you are charging people to go to your shows and you cant even sing your own songs, you are nothing more then a fake and a common thief. She did not deserve to have that life most of us would only dream of!! You reap what you sew !!!

Nate we are all deserving of compassion and love and healing. Amy had issues; and drugs was her unfortunate remedy. May she find the peace she could not find in this lifetime...

Doesn't matter if your a rock star or someone right at your computer reading this, If you abuse drugs and alcohol the time will arrive where you wont have a tomorrow to start over. Amy case is not a special one. Alcohol and drugs doesn't care who your are. To bad stardom for Amy only meant we got to read about something that's happening hundreds of times a week across the world.

b1ond1e: "Your comment of Good Riddence when someone at the age of 27 has lost their battle with drugs no only shows your lack of morals it shows you have not been raised correctly. Amy was someones daughter someones friend."

Yeah. She was someone's daughter and friend who knew the dangers of drug use, had multiple opportunities to take advantage of (presumably) the best rehab facilities in the world, and threw them away.

If you want to feel sorry for her parents, go ahead. But feeling sorry for her? Not really.

You should be ashamed of yourself. She may have not made the best choices for her health, but she was still a young woman with a bright future and was a fantastic musician.

What ashame and such a waste of beautiful gift. She had a wonderful talent. My this child find forgiveness and peace in the presence of the master creator. Her addiction was more than she could control. She reminds me of my mother who died when i was very young.
