Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London on Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.
The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.
But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.
The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that many considered a throwback to the Motown sound.
She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back to Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
But there was trouble.
Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years marked by drug addiction and arrests.
Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.
"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps - not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."
Her music was wonderful and it will hold its place in history. As with Hendrix, Joplin, and Holiday, died too soon. Prayers to her family. Hopefully, the public will show some decency in the aftermath. May she rest in peace
rip
Why couldn't it have been that other girl? What's her name.... Bieber?
Another one bites the dust. She was a glorified junkie who somehow got famous and blew all her money on narcs. At least she didn't take someone with her.
Denis Leary: "We need a three hour movie about Jim Morrison? No we don't. I can sum it up in five seconds. I'm drunk, I'm nobody. I'm drunk, I'm famous. I'm drunk, I'm dead. The End."
This news really saddened me. There seems to be a strong correlation between talented musicians and difficulty with drugs and alcohol. So many talented careers cut short. It is such a shame. My mind and my emotions hearken back to Janis Joplin. And so many others...
She was a very talented singer. I am a genuine fan. May she rest in peace.
She sold her soul to the devil and now she lives in his presence. Yes it is sad. No one should perish.
If no one perished, this would be an awfully crowded planet.
thats not nice she had a drink and drug problem she did not deserve to die so i would not say good riddence she was someones child
WHHHHAAAAATTTT??? She didn't even respect her opwn life, mocking and joking about her own drug abuse and down playing rehab in one of her songs. Why should anyone be expected to respect her or anyone with this same nature. Drug use and abuse is an option, a choice. She loved and lived for drugs even more than she lived for her music. And as far as she "did not deserve" to die, I ask, what better outcome did she deserve??? Obviously this is tragic, but it's a sought out tragedy, not an 'accident'.
Just another sweaty, junkie on the pile. Nothing shocking or special about it...happens to alot of drug addicts every day. Natural selection at its finest I suppose...just made a little more room on the planet for the people who AREN'T morons.
okay.... Generation-X is dying. Thank you greedy baby boomers.....
What the hell do 60 year olds have to do with this junkie? Blame someone else.
Jesus. This is tragic. Today will be an all day Pandora Winehouse fest in her honor. Poor girl.
While I'm not surprised, I do think it's sad. I was not a fan, but I do know people who have struggled with addiction. It's a DISEASE people! Addicts don't deserve to be judged any more than anybody else does. People who judge think they are superior, and you are right – you are superior in your IGNORANCE!!!
Amen
While it is sad....it is a choice. No it is not a DISEASE!!!!! Didsese is something YOU have no control over......your hands don not control your brain.....this is what is wrong with soceity today....NO responsibility for theri actions.
So sad, I love her songs. Its sad to see a Human being losing a battle. battle with drugs. I hope whitney learns from this
A "through-back?"
Sad. Talented, gifted and wasted. That is what drugs and poor self image and no self control can do. Another example to our children. To bad she did not recover. Let her music live and let her rip. Again, really sad story.
