Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London on Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.
The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.
But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.
The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that many considered a throwback to the Motown sound.
She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back to Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
But there was trouble.
Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years marked by drug addiction and arrests.
Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.
"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps - not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."
We will always love you Amy Winehouse. Rest, sister, it is time to take a break from this world and understand who you are. God Bless Amy Winehouse and her family during this time of reflection.
regardless of her personal strife, she was, without question one of the most talented signers and song writers.
She was the real deal, this is a huge loss to the arts and entertainment world.
It's tragic that another young soul passes away far too soon, but in this case...it was bound to happen. She followed the same vices and lack of discipline that took the lives of the other young musicians before her: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon, Brad Nowell...the trend continues to this day.
So glad to see Brad Nowell on your list. I think he's often forgotten and was one of the most brilliant musical minds in history. Cant' imagine what wonderful things Sublime could have done if he hadn't lost the war. And let's not forget Shannon Hoon or Jim Morrison. Just not fair that the things that help these amazing artists contact their muses also takes them from us.
Rest in peace Amy.
So that's why I couldn't sleep last night.
Some real talent in those pipes. Hope she's found her peace. Can't help but wishing the breaking news was: "Casey Anthony Found Dead in Baez Home."
Despite her personal demons, she had an amazing voice. I think she could have been another Nina, Etta or Lena. R.I.P Amy.
Wow? I am totally suprised! When will people realize she didnt want help.....she was offered. Just another waste of oxygen
It was just a matter of time.
Hey! CNN editing staff, it's 'throwback' not through-back.
Amy Winehouse was an incredible talent in the music industry. Her voice was one of a kind and I am saddened by this news. My thoughts are with her family and friends during this time. RIP Amy–you will be deeply missed!
I'm so glad that Keith has his head on straight and has never had any struggles....yea right!! Everyone has struggles....be more sympathetic to other's suffering. It doesn'tmatter if it's a drug addiction or phobia, we need to take care of each other as well as thank GOD when our lives are amazing! You will have your day Keith and you will be begging for someone to support you. With what you wrote, your belief...I will venture to say you won't have anyone to support you....pompa$$ Good luck Keith
This slob ranks as high as the poor victims in Norway, NOT!!!!
27 is not a good age .. Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison.. RIP.
Well, you can't say they didn't try to make her go to rehab...
