Singer Amy Winehouse found dead, UK press says

Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London on Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.

The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.

But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.

The troubled British singer was known for a stirring, soulful voice that many considered a throwback to the Motown sound.

She had a breakout year in 2008 when she won several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Rehab.” Her album “Back to Black” garnered Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.

But there was trouble.

Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll  on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years marked by drug addiction and arrests.

Winehouse’s parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.

"A gradual recovery, which is good,” Winehouse’s father, Mitch, told the Telegraph. “With slight backward steps - not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."

      Yes, where is your compassion for a drug addict, whose one hit wonder was, "they try to make me go to rehab but I said no, no, no." With her path that she decided to go down, seems that she didn't really care.

    Last week I used Amy Whitehouse's video "Rehab" while presenting a speech about Rehab and its benefits. Addiction hurts and Rehab heals. I'm sorry for all those who think that people intenionally throw their lives away because of addiction. Those who are not caught in the grips of addiction need to be a voice for those who are. In otherwords you who are without sin cast the first stone! I pray for her friends and family.

    Addiction is not a disease. A disease kills you while addiction is just you killing yourself. Mental problems are not diseases because they don't actively, regardless of your actions, hurt you physically. They only make it hard for you to choose correctly but you still, in the end, make the choice on your own.

      Mental illness IS physiological in many cases. Look up "clinical depression" and you will see the medical definition for it. Before you spout things you know nothing about, I would highly recommend that you do some serious research before making yourself look like an idiot. Mental illness IS medical...not just "in your head".

      Still, there is help for those with depression...medical help. Those who choose to ignore the signs will experience the consequences of doing nothing about it...i.e., suicide...drug addiction...etc.
