First gay couple weds in New York

A city official married the first couple in New York City to wed under the state's new law allowing same-sex marriage Sunday.

Phyllis Siegal, 77, and Connie Kopelov, 85, were married in a chapel at the city clerk's office as a crowd of onlookers cheered.

Hundreds of same-sex couples heard the news Friday that they made the cut in the marriage lottery that New York state instituted for Sunday when the state's Marriage Equality Act took effect.

The New York City clerk's office has been flooded with more than 2,600 requests for marriage licenses since the wording on the online application was changed from "Groom and Bride" to "Spouse A and Spouse B." The office could handle less than a third of those requests - gay or straight - on Sunday, according to a press statement the city released earlier in the week. The lottery was set up to allocate 764 slots for couples who want to obtain marriage licenses and/or be married at city clerk's offices on Sunday. If all 764 weddings actually take place on Sunday, it will set a one-day record for the city.

Marcos Chaljub and Freddy Zambrano were married after Siegal and Kopelov. The two tearfully said their vows as friends hovered and snapped pictures. "You're married!" one declared as celebratory hugs were exchanged afterward. Chaljub and Zambrano conducted last-minute preparations Saturday for their wedding, picking up bouquets of wildflowers for their bridesmaids and champagne for a family brunch afterward. The couple has been together for five years.

"I have certain people in my life, they're not totally OK with it, but they accept it, and just the fact they respect us because of that, it's really the most that I can ask for," Chaljub told CNN's Susan Candiotti.

The two have been wearing rings for five years, and said they don't plan to exchange new ones. "We're just going to polish them up and exchange them again," Chaljub said.

New York legalized same-sex marriage in June. The Marriage Equality Act was a priority for Gov. Andrew Cuomo after winning election in November. The law was passed under a Republican-led Senate after days of delays and negotiations between the two parties. New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, herself openly gay, told CNN New York is the place where the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) movement was born, and a place the world looks to.

"All eyes are upon it, and I believe it is going to help propel this movement forward faster than any of the other states have," Quinn said.

Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire also allow same-sex marriage, as does the District of Columbia.

DO you know the difference between a gay person and a pedophile?
    Any one?
I detest pedophiles, by the way.

This world has lost it's BOUNDERIES. God made bounderies because he LOVES us. Would you say a parent who lets you do what ever you want LOVES you or a parent that sets bounderies LOVES you. Apply this question I have asked to your parents and your child-hood.

I agree, Jazzzzz, but what does that have to do with gay marriage? Is that a boundary that one dare not cross?

According to the bible that President Obama placed his right-hand on and swore an oath to the God of that bible...yes, gay-marriage is a boundary not to be crossed. The bible is crystal-clear about how God views these matters. People should study their bibles before accusing God or doubting him. Contempt prior to investigation is an ailment that the non-readers suffer from. 80% of US have our own copy of the best selling book of all time. Now if they would study it rather than hanging-on every word that some "holy man" said. It's these nutcase priests and preachers distorting God's word that has most of US confused.

@banasy...do you believe the bibles view of marriage? Do you even believe your own library dictionary definition of the word 'marriage'? If not, how did you come by your definitions?

That's odd. Jesus, the perfect son of God, had his own bible and referred to it often. He also prayed to his heavenly father, and taught his early followers how to pray, and what to pray for. Common sense cannot teach you to pray for God's Kingdom to come. Jesus did though.Common sense cannot teach you to pray for your enemies, to turn the other cheeck, etc. These teachings of Jesus go-against today's common sense that says to seek revenge for 9/11, or "make ny day" laws that make sense to most. Any warrior needs instruction, not just common sense...especially when that warrior's battle is a spiritual one.

@Philip: You never answered my question or anyone else's. God has other children you know. What about them? Oh yeah that's right Jesus is the only one that matters. You obviously are a numskull. You can't answer questions that are a bit challenging, but then you expect people to join your cult. Everybody here knows what a moron you are, so why even bother? Are you "special"? It sure seems like it. Jesus isn't God's only son, nor was he God's perfect son. God doesn't feed his children to the wolves like Jesus supposedly was also I would argue that Jesus' crucifixion did little good. After the fall of Rome came Islam and the dark ages. Why did that all happen if Jesus was dying for our sins? I will stop asking you questions as you never answer them anyways. You're an old fool who has no critical thinking skills at all. Stop spreading your lies, because you will have to answer for them one day.

Jesus did not read the Bible. Perhaps you need to read when the books of gospels where put together to make a statement like that Six years after Nicaea (331), Constantine commissioned Eusebius to create an official Christian Bible.

This is really a bad joke. This is what happens in a society where people are well-fed and have nothing worth to do in life.

Great American parody – regarding any union as marriage. People do it when they are not virgins and are bored.

Why do old people or middle-agers care for romance like teenagers when they are supposed to mind to build a better world for the younger ones? Pathetic.

thats one thing that is wrong with some humans. instead of being concerned with how someone else loves their life clean out your own dam closet. you should not judge others that gods job. open your closed mind and get over it. some people point fingers i guess that is their cheap asa entertainment. worry about you and yours. gay people iam sure have it rough enough as it is. u probably got gays in your family. wake up and smell the coffee.

MMMM, You are correct, God's word is written on mans heart to a degree. But if one continues in a sin their heart will be seared with a hot iron 1 Tim.4.

When we see man with man women with women this is a sign for the believers that we are coming to the end. This is the only sin that man is proud of. We read about this in Romans 1.

God said it would be this way. We read before the end comes God says it will be as it was in the days of Lot. Now to find out what was going on we read about this in Genesis 19.

I am not picking on ones sin, I have plenty of sin myself, I am pointing to the fact that what you see going on is a sign for the believers the end is near.

As it was in the days of Lot so shall it be.....

All the hateful posts by the religious on this site only serve to confirm what a twisted, sick, and immoral thing "religions" are. Gay people are human beings, and no magical book written by epileptics and schizophrenics thousands of years ago can serve to justify your narrow minded and fear-based disinformation. This thing will not be undone. Score another one for the voices of tolerance and reason.

All the hateful post by the religious? What was texted that is sooooo hateful? that it is wrong...gay is not human...gay is an act...neither is it a gender it is genderless. The source of all Good and all True Wisdom is the Infinite God whose revealations and motivations are by life and by love and by light. Your way is illicit, narrow-minded, fear-based, hateful, a lie, self serving, a culture of death that opposes life, love, truth, and God. Many are ignorant of the magnitude of your evil and desolation and abominations for it is too shameful to speak about and was so covered with fire brimstone and salt except shown unopposed no one is above your assault and you would even molest
      Angels.

I with you Dave. God bless you brother.I know its hard out here on this spiritual battlefield when you try to persuade non-believers that you're not trying to attack them, or berate them ,you're only trying to show them how to live right. All TRUE believers were all at one point living foul, because I was one and still working to live better, but you know in your heart that you're not putting anybody down(those that do are not really Christian). We only do this out of love for our fellowmanl, so keep the faith brother and God bless you.

I believe in God just not Christ. I'm smart enough to know that I don't know everything, but I'm also pretty sure Jesus didn't know everything, for if he did we he would have cured disease and poverty for the men he was supposedly saving.. Stop calling me a non believer. You worship a man, a book, and shiny trinkets.. All against the first commandment. If anyone is the first to burn it will be your kind. Please take your "battlefield" somewhere else. You're scaring the sane people.
