U.S. leaders struggle to reach debt deal as deadline clock ticks

Two days after breaking off talks with President Barack Obama on a $3 trillion-plus deficit reduction deal, House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday his last offer remains on the table as pressure mounted to avert a looming government default.

No formal negotiations were scheduled for Sunday, but Boehner told "Fox News Sunday" he intended to propose a way forward in the afternoon. Boehner also planned a conference call with the House Republican caucus at 4:30 p.m., according to congressional aides.

Both Boehner, R-Ohio, and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said a comprehensive deficit deal that would bring Republican support for raising the federal debt ceiling was still an option.

eiffuR .rM@I thought recently they decided to cut off Pakistan. The disagreement over how the US went in and found OBL and they could not, then the blame and shame came in, hence I thought the US decided against sending any more money.

Does Boehner want to Tax the middle class by cutting SSI and Medicare? I thought he was against taxes. The government shouldn't pay people who worked all lives and invested in these programs. We should not have any social programs, and be just a country for the rich. Poor and working fend for yourself. We could save money and out-source our military to mercenaries.

Since Congress is unable to do it's job we could balance the budget by eliminating all those overpaid Senate and House positions and their entire staffs, in fact we'd have a surplus. If this were a business they'd have all been fired by now. It's time for voters to demand TERM LIMITS.

@ RUFFNUTT I agree 100% ! Frendship can't be bought, it is earned! But, what is worse, is that the U.S. [politicans] gives this money and then they want to tell the country (ies) how to run the country. Have you seen the (old) movie: "Dirty American", that's what it all about.

I read that the Tim Geithner told the government in January that we were going to default in Aug. if the ceiling was not raised. Who is suppose the move to start the process, anyone know?

This a artifical crisis to take the people minds off of housing and jobs. The consumers are not spending and we are consumer based economy, every since we did away with a manufacting based economy. Wall Street and the Job Creators are doing good by investing in easy money making hedge funds, derivatives, and govenment subsides like the Oil companies. $5 a gallon gas, no jobs, no affordable housing, and cutting SSI, and Medicare.

@SPENDMO The SSi was setup to help [force] people to invest their moneny and when they retired the money was to be paid back. It was trickery, at the time the government set it up the retirement age was about 65 and the life expectancy was only about 45. The politicans thought it was a money making proposition. Since then life expectancy has gone beyond 60 and there are too many people living longer. So besides the fact that the government 'borrowing' money from the SSI, it doesn't have the money to pay back the people.

@SPENDO I do agree with much you have posted, I do believe there is a crisis, but that crisis can be easily fixed by bringing the manufactuering jobs back home and enforcing illegal hiring laws, but that is something neither party is willing to do. (Why do you think the Feds come unglued when states start making their own anti-illegal laws?) I think if the politicans were to have to live by the laws that they make, things would be a lot different!
