Gergen: Obama, Boehner too partisan this late in debt talks

Televised speeches by President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner on the U.S. debt crisis Monday were too partisan with just eight days before a deadline to raise the nation's debt ceiling, CNN senior political analyst David Gergen said Monday night.

"Had these speeches been given three or four weeks ago, I think they would have been welcomed as part of the political discourse - you know, let's have some fisticuffs, each side presses its point of view, appeals to the American people," Gergen said. "But to be given on the eve of a possible default, both individuals gave partisan speeches ... and I think each was intending to rally his own base."

"I think probably each fellow came out better with his base, but I think the country is so tired of the political posturing, and people really want leadership that finds answers and gets us off the edge of a cliff," he added.

The Treasury Department says the nation's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling must be raised by August 2. If it is not, the department says, the federal government won't be able to pay all its bills next month, and Americans could face rising interest rates and a declining dollar, among other problems.

These politicos are literally toying with peoples lives, while they're "posturing"! We don't want useless "poseurs," we want leaders to stand up for the people & take charge! What about older people who need SS for rent, what about people with medical issues who need their meds? This is incredibly irresponsible! I hope Americans remember this when it's time to vote, whether you depend on those checks or not!!

Remember the last financial crisis and the subsequent bailout of the many of the culprits responsible. I am willing to bet my paycheck that if August 2 arrives with no deal the world will not come to an end. Ohh things will get harder for our pets in Washington. They will be forced to choose who gets paid first. No deal is a balanced budget by default. Frankly this is the best solution. At last change I can believe in!

This is only a good solution if you actually want our debt to increase dramatically. Because it will, since the interest rates on the debts would increase. But then at that point it would be harder to find the revenue to pay for it since the default would cause even greater unemployment in the people. That is no solution.

Boehner , the republicans in Washington and the TEA BAGGERS don't care about the working class, they only want to make the President fail. If the corparations were creating jobs like the republicans say the unemployment rate wouldnt be high now The republicans are nothing but liars. but they have to lie to keep middle class republicans voting for them, while the oil com. pay for their campaigns. in the end 98% of americans suffer even the middle class republicans who vote for the greedy dogs who do nothing for them

Has anyone tried to get on Boehner's website to send a message to him?

Every listed URL errors out. Isn't that convenient!

I went on americaspeaksout.com a couple times and there were thousands of people demanding an end to outsourcing on there. Of course I couldn't post on any of them either. It's very CONVENIENT to say the least. None of them seriously want to address the economy. It's all a puppet show designed to keep us on the edge of our seats irate until they finally agree on something at the last minute. The smart ones are the ones that know they don't really have a choice.
