Gergen: Obama, Boehner too partisan this late in debt talks

Televised speeches by President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner on the U.S. debt crisis Monday were too partisan with just eight days before a deadline to raise the nation's debt ceiling, CNN senior political analyst David Gergen said Monday night.

"Had these speeches been given three or four weeks ago, I think they would have been welcomed as part of the political discourse - you know, let's have some fisticuffs, each side presses its point of view, appeals to the American people," Gergen said. "But to be given on the eve of a possible default, both individuals gave partisan speeches ... and I think each was intending to rally his own base."

"I think probably each fellow came out better with his base, but I think the country is so tired of the political posturing, and people really want leadership that finds answers and gets us off the edge of a cliff," he added.

The Treasury Department says the nation's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling must be raised by August 2. If it is not, the department says, the federal government won't be able to pay all its bills next month, and Americans could face rising interest rates and a declining dollar, among other problems.

You have got to be kidding me. Let's stop talking about blank checks and start talking about blank responses. I have emailed every member of congress I could tonight and hope everyone does the same. This is not a party problem this is an AMERICAN problem. We ALL need to treat this issue like the grown ups we are.

How realistic would it be to hope that, in the event we default, people would vote lower down the list of potential canidates for any office for the next five years?

@Doug...not eveyone believes that our government controls our economy. Some say that the Federal Reserve/central banks located here are nothing more than branches of an old bank in Basel, Switzerland...The Bank for International Settlements. Many realize that the Federal Reserve is a private enterprise not beholding to the American people nor to their government. Do you?

The US economy would take a giant leap forward if President Obama would allow US to audit the Federal Reserve. The audit would reveal exactly where our tax-dollars have been going, particularly income-tax dollars. But just like his predecessors, President Obama refuses to allow this audit to take place. Many of our current and former political leaders would be 'fingered' by an audit, with charges serious enough to have them removed from office and imprisoned. Why do you suppose that it is that the fed has never been audited?

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, states that:

"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."[7]

This is just one upmanship between dems and GOP
.They continue their feud and forget those who voted them in. These 2 parties should be stripped down and more political party's encouraged to form. Other democracies have several parties to choose from while the US the major backer of democracy mainly has 2 behemoths

If I don't receive my SSI & SSD checks, I expect Mr. Obama or Mr. Boehner to pay my bills & buy my groceries for the month of August out of their own pockets. Get your thumbs our of your butts & settle this!

@ Tony G:EXACTLY!!! Even the posters on this site can't seem to get the picture right. It's not just the politicions, but I do believe that they can do something. There are three things that politions can do but refuse to do. Stop foreign, bring back the outsorced jobs and enforce illegal hiring laws.

Well said phil ,but u've just alluded to whats on the surface , it goes alot deeper/into the CFR the IMF the Trilateral commision and the committee of 300 as well as the G-8 and the W.T.O. These are all round table groups that decide for us how things are gonna be in economies and politics in the same fashion as the bilderburgers who by the way are the super eliteists of the globe and if you dont believe then google the list of names of their members and you'll see they control and own the worlds wealthyist corpoations on the planet – they are the movers and the shakers ! ***the truth is out there *** just waiting for us to wake and find it!

When we wake to find it, in a split society who can make all believe? How does one know to trust them? And will it be just the average Joe that can run and win? Won't the "Elite" be crushing the honest the whole time they run for office?
