Pot farms in California forest raided, dozens arrested

Nearly 80 people have been arrested in the largest marijuana-eradication law enforcement operation in California history, several local reports say. About 292,000 plants have been discovered, Justice Department spokeswoman Michelle Gregory told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

Raids involving local, state and federal authorities have been going on for days in the Mendocino National Forest in remote, mountainous areas in Glenn, Colusa, Tehama, Mendocino, Lake and Trinity counties, according to the Tehama County Daily News.

Officials are beginning the massive cleanup of the sites, which have suffered environmental damage, the Daily News and Press-Democrat report.

The idea for the operation reportedly came after a public meeting in Covelo in north Mendocino County in 2010. Residents said that armed people had confronted them in and around the forest. Hikers and ranchers also said they had been shot at when they mistakenly walked into areas where marijuana was being grown, the Press-Democrat reports.

It's unclear who the growers might be.

Pot farms on national forests have been a problem in California and across the country for years.

Wow, with all the money and resourses being spent it took complaints from the public to instances of people getting accosted or shot at in that area. Not the police or Federal officials finding this production farm. All the money being spent on pot that you can't OD on and just gives you a nice buzz. I just think this is a waste of money and time! And if the police were doing their jobs there wou;d be no chance to start a farm on Federal or State land.

If they legalized it the price would drop and too many people would lose money on both sides. I think the powers that be know that they can make more money maintaining a black market for weed and throwing money at a fuitile war on drugs! But hey, if they cant pass a budget or raise the debt limit were all gonna have to do something! I think you know what I'll do...........

News flash: legalizing is not going to stop this. Law enforcement will. Legalizing will only mitigate the problem, but not stop it.

There was also a study done by the U.S. government showing the same thing form as far back as 1975. You are the stupid, uneducated one if you didn't already know that THC killed cancer. Educated yourself, "stupid" to quote you.

Yeah, I guess the last thing we'd ever want to do is green our deserts, and spend $20 billion annually to keep them that way.

And how many of these people saying this stuff actually work in cancer research? I'd be willing to guess not many if not none. And, all the links and info on the web are a lot of "if's" and "possibly's". There is no solid definitive proof that it would in fact be a viable cancer treatment. THC binds to receptors on the cell and sometimes signals a process call "autophagy". Autophagy can lead to apoptosis (sudden cell death) but as often as it causes cell death, it also equally promotes cell survival. The process is very indiscriminate, and uncontrollable. But, by all means, please listen to the comment board expert (janet reno). LOL.

I am a PhD in GPCR research with a masters in neuroscience. extracellular is correct the only problem is that the research is indeed in its infancy and has been held back for soooooooooooo long.

Good for them. It should be legal, but Until it's legal, the government should protect the citizens from being shot at and confronted. If the drug thugs are going to grow illegally in a state that it's basically legal, then they deserve what they get.

Yeah, let's legalize it! Because, we seriously don't have enough paranoid, lazy people in this country.

Remove the criminal aspect of pot, and the paranoia goes away. As far as laziness, that's a personality issue.

"Janet" says that "Everyone should know by now that THC kills cancer cells" Really?! Where is your proof?? Millions and millions of dollars are being spent and donated for the cure of cancer. If POT was the cure why have friends and loved ones died from cancer? Oh, because they didn't know POT cured it all? Come on!

Deric G – the feds uncovered this fact back in 1975. I already posted a link to a study proving that THC causes cancer cells to undergo autophagy (killing the cancer while keeping the healthy cells in tact). I am not making anything up.

Actually, there is some evidence that it does both have a primary effect and a secondary role in fighting cancer. Maybe you should try researching it before poppying off at the mouth. http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA400761/Marijuana-for-Cancer.html

Janet- Why are you neglecting to mention that THC promoted autophagy just as equally promotes cell survival, as it does cell death? Or have you not read enough of the studies to see that information?

maybe because the governments been destroying it every chance theyve had for the past 80 years? i used to sell weed in california, til the lapd decided to ignore their own laws and raid us and shut us down, and if you think it has no benefits towards cancer then say that to my patients (customers) who actually smoked it so they wouldnt have to put up with all the pain and misery associated with chemo.

Yup, now the cops have free pot whenever they want it and don't even try to dispute this. . When are we going to evolve and allow us to make our own choices! I'm sick of government telling me how I should live my life. I don't drink...seen it destroy too many. I do use marijuana, and have NEVER seen anyone die by using it. The only ones who die in associaltion with pot are the cartels and drug dealers, innocent bystanders, etc. LEGALIZE MARIJUANA!!!!!!!!!

All, as one of the 2010 articles reviewing cannabanoids and cancer states, such research is in its infancy. But pot has been used for nausea long before now. So it is not too surprising that people are not necessarily aware (and not necessarily morons).
