Pot farms in California forest raided, dozens arrested

Nearly 80 people have been arrested in the largest marijuana-eradication law enforcement operation in California history, several local reports say. About 292,000 plants have been discovered, Justice Department spokeswoman Michelle Gregory told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

Raids involving local, state and federal authorities have been going on for days in the Mendocino National Forest in remote, mountainous areas in Glenn, Colusa, Tehama, Mendocino, Lake and Trinity counties, according to the Tehama County Daily News.

Officials are beginning the massive cleanup of the sites, which have suffered environmental damage, the Daily News and Press-Democrat report.

The idea for the operation reportedly came after a public meeting in Covelo in north Mendocino County in 2010. Residents said that armed people had confronted them in and around the forest. Hikers and ranchers also said they had been shot at when they mistakenly walked into areas where marijuana was being grown, the Press-Democrat reports.

It's unclear who the growers might be.

Pot farms on national forests have been a problem in California and across the country for years.

Finally!!!!! The end to the pot epidemic (it's an epidemic, right?)...! This should definitely be the last we hear of it, For sure!!! I knew this day would come!!

    /sarcasm

You'd think that by the (heavily) one sided pro-pot comments (let alone common sense in general) that anyone with half of a brain would realize that this is an extremely expensive waste of time and resources. Always has been and always will be. I don't think there's any question that alcohol (and tobacco) are much worse for you.... For example, someone addicted to alcohol will suffer from extreme withdrawl symptoms and can/will actually DIE if they can't access that drug. However that's all good, stop by your local corner store and pick up as much as you want, so long as the government gets their cut who gives a $#!T what happens you to your health (and they KNOW it's bad). Sure alcohol might cause you to become careless, reckless, violent, a true danger to yourself and those around, hurt your loved ones, and so on, but for the love of God DO NOT smoke pot!!!!! That stuff will make you CRAZY!!!.... Like crazy hungry and crazy happy. You might even sit back and reflect on how amazing life and this giant rock we're floating in space on really is. You know, dangerous stuff like that. You might not rob a bank, beat your wife or kids, kill someone in a car accident, or anything minor like that... but getting more in touch with nature and your own consciousness is most certainly more of a threat than those petty crimes. Money well spent gentlemen! Kudos to you! You deserve to relax and knock back a case of your favorite suds! Sure, you'll wake up feeling like a pile of garbage in the morning but that just means it's working! Again, just make sure you stay away from that reefer bud... after a night of that stuff you'll sleep in until like 10am and wake up feeling rested and stuff.... just awful!!

Just say "nope to dope", folks!! That stuff will kill ya!..... no, wait... is that right? Someone tell me what I think please.

Probably a re-hash of most of the posts here... is there a 'beating a dead horse' emoticon available somewhere?

From the way I read this article, it failed to mention that it was not an attack on California marijuana growers, it was a coordinated sting on illegal pot farms being grown, likely, by illegal immigrants or cartel members on state and federal land. If anything it's a boon for the legitimate medical marijuana growers in Northern California who are following the state laws and NOT carrying guns in order to shoot trespassers. The only people who need to be paranoid are those who are truly doing wrong. Like religious zealots shooting people on Norwegian islands. Funny, he wasn't muslim either...

Its heavily one-sided because none of the people who smoke bothered to read the article. This bust is about cutting out the dangerous, illegal growers who are destroying the national forests and shooting at normal people to protect their crops.

Dude, California support medicinal marijuana use. California doesn't have an objection for people to grow or sell marijuana legal. The problem as stated in this article is not about marijuana usage; it's about the legal growth of Marijuana in our National parks. These growers illegally access our National parks, cleared the land, and grow marijuana. I support Marijuana usage and growth but not destroying our National parks for the grower's personal wealth. It's like the rich destroying our rivers and lakes during the industrial revolution to line their pocket with money.

Good thing that bailout California just got is going to a unjust cause such as this! When will the older generations die off s we can legalize this?

learn you facts!! It's already legalized in California for years for medicinal usage. This article is about growers violating our National Parks to grow marijuana for their personal gain. How would you like if someone went to your back yard and grow marijuana but everytime you go back there, they shoot at you or threaten a gun at you. At the same time, they damage your backyard. Any money they rake in, they won't give you a cent. How would you like that?

its kind of sad when you think about the alcohol that is addictive and other serious drugs. legal drugs are starting to become a problem in the united states like loratab and other similar. even in the last new that cancer fighting drugs are scares due to the demand but government does not want to legalize weed becuase of the health benafits and the money people could make. they want to tax on it and drug dealers dont want it leagal becuase that a cash profit. i work in the medical field and have seen so many benifts to the THC and ITS NON ADDICTIVE. smoking cigs have a chemical inside thats addictive. people that dont believe or care for it even government need to think on it again. especially one day when they get sick and can not eat or in pain.

It cost 2 million/year to bust and pay for helicopters in small town of 10,000 people in california...$2 millioon of taxpayers money. what a waste of taxpayers money. With 2 million all it did was cause supply to drop and not dent in demand. price just goes up for pot. Thanks DEA says the pot dealers association of US==high prices more profit.

the fact that marijuana has been proven to have good side effects isnt even important because everything that is legal in this country has tons of negative side effects. If marijuana was worse for you then it would be made legal because some things in this country are ass backwards. Watch tv for an hour and you will see fda approved drugs that might help your leg pain go away but could give you kidney failure liver failure and death but will get rid of your leg pain so its all good. the world is a stupid place

Pot will increase in price in California to over $400.00 an ounce. The best price support for a common field crop in the World is the Federal Government and its insane policies...................... When is Washington going to wake up? It's a common field crop like hay..............
