On the Radar: Obama's life threatened, Olympian kills self, Washington talks debt

Man arrested for threatening Obama's life - A 21-year-old man from Uzbekistan was indicted Tuesday in  Alabama for threatening to kill President Barack Obama. The man was in the United States illegally because his student visa had been revoked, yet he was able to obtain a machine gun and a grenade, authorities said. Ulugbek Kodirov had bought the machine gun from an undercover agent at a motel in the small town of Leeds, Alabama, the Department of Justice said.

Olympic athlete kills himself - Freestyle skier Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, who won a silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Games, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Utah police say. The 29-year-old called police Monday night and said he was going to kill himself. He told them he was in Lambs Canyon, between Salt Lake City and Park City, a police official told CNN. Officers found him there dead at about 11:30 p.m. Peterson had competed in two Olympics, taking bronze at two straight World Junior Championships in 2000 and 2001. He picked up the nickname "Speedy" at a summer ski camp in Lake Placid, New York, in the mid-1990s, because coaches said his big helmet reminded them of the cartoon "Speed Racer." He competed in Torino, Italy, at the 2006 Winter Games.

Memphis schools to open on time - Schools in Memphis, Tennessee, will start the school year on time. The announcement comes after much controversy surrounding $55 million the city owed the schools so that they could keep operating on a normal schedule. There was talk that school openings would have to be delayed. There are approximately 103,000 students in the state's largest district, according to local reports. What's happening in Memphis mirrors a trend in the rest of the country, where schools are laying off teachers and trimming budgets due to fiscal problems related to the troubled national economy.

Debt talks - There is still no end in sight on a debt agreement. A representative from Moody's will be on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to give lawmakers a frank assessment of how bad things could get if there isn't a resolution by next week. Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey says the U.S. could lose its AAA credit rating regardless of whether an agreement is reached. Read more about what the stalemate could mean for the economy.

...was once part of the Soviet Union. But when the USSR fell, that area of Russia, an oil and natural gas rich area called 'The Caspian Basin', was carved into several tiny little countries, with each owning some of the mineral rights to basin reserves. (roughly 60 trillion dollars worth of proven reserves). But old wells plug themselves off after a time, so all of these old oilwells became worthless. None of the tiny countries could afford to have the wells fracced, refurbished, and so when they were approached by James Baker III who offered to purchase the rights on behalf of The Carlyle Group, each of the tiny nations leaders became personally wealthy, as their people went without. That was years ago. Today, after Halliburton refurbished the old wells using YOUR tax dollars that had been earmarked for rebuilding Iraq, The Group sells this oil via Afghan pipelines to China for about 27 dollars per barrel. (we pay a hundred for OPEC oil) Now you know why the US cannot compete with China.

All republicans making money with oil. Gee makes those wars seem like they were for oil landlocked in poor countries. Halburton-Cheney. Used our tax dollars-republicans do not want our tax dollars,..... if it is for the seniors, healthcare, or welfare, but oil makes them wealthy.

@poor...exactly. But their leaders are filthy rich. (see 'Uzbekistan' post above for how it is that the leaders of these tiny little "Stan's" are rich and their people are starving. The same exact thing has happened all-accross West Africa, another particularly oil-rich area of the world) Halliburton who cater's to The Carlyle Group, has been busted many times bribing African leader's who allow access to the peoples natural resources in exchange for birbe-money. Remember when africa's greatest resource was slaves? They still would be except now, oil and diamonds are worth more to foreign nations than people are.

OUR leaders are filthy rich...not any different than Uzbekistan. Obama can't stop any of it anymore than he's been successful in stopping the Bush tax cuts. Republicans started this mess and now we're STUCK.

How can Republican's be blamed? President Obama knows all of these things and could end them with an executive order. Even Clinton knew what The Carlyle Group was up to and did nothing. What do you folk's think about a group, made-up primarily of former politicians, selling oil to China for 1/4th what we pay? Do you think that it's right? that it's fair? Your silence says you do..

Now that you've busted them, the Carlyle Group will set things straight within twenty-four hours, I'm sure.

...and President Obama's silence speaks volumes. He is fully aware of the fact that Bush's Carlyle Group is why we simply cannot compete with the Chinese, who not only produce 53% of their owm oil, they only pay 27/bbl. to a group of former politicians who are getting filthy(er) rich(er) by the minute as America suffers. We can't compete with China because President Obama refuses to stop this illegal behavior! He could ya know. You all must be bummed out...you thought president Obama was one of US...turn's out he's one of them. Thanks for voting him in. wtg...you voters sure know your stuff. (not)

Philip- since I first saw this and I have done some reseach, you are more eloquet than I could you break it down to the rest of the bloggers so they can understand the ramifications to the US citizens.
Also, if our tax dollars paid for them to secure this oil, why can't the US taxpayers sue to get these oil wells?

@poor (Jazzy?) You forgot to mention about 27 of the groups memebers. I have their last names all memorized. 1.) Major, John. Former UK PM-Appointed head of Carlyl's European division on May 14, 2001. 2-27) Bin Laden, various and sundry first names. One of them could have been Salim Bin Laden, but he died in a freak airplane "accident" in texas before GW Bush could pay him back the 5 million bucks that he loaned G-dub to start "Arbusto Energy". (dubya thought 'arbusto' meant bush...it translates 'shrub', still appropriate) Many of The Group, including several bin Ladens, were all together at The Carlyle hotel on 9/11 preparing to watch the day's festivities on a big-screen TV. after the show was over, even though there was a national "no fly" policy in effect, the Bin Laden's were scurried back to the House of Saud in a private jet. Anyone with a brain and a few hours on their hands should be able to figure this all out.

Joey? The last time I voted was in the third grade in a mock school election. The other kid's mostly voted for the same man that their parent's did, so Richard Milhous Nixon won hands-down. I didn't know much about politics back then, but I knew that my dad was a war-monger himself, and there was something about Nixon that i just didn't trust. So I voted for george McGovern. (shrug) Since then I've voted for the same man every single year, Jesus Christ the King of his father's kingdom, God's 'Kingdom'. (aka government, aka The Kingdom mentioned in the lord's model prayer) So ya got me there!

He he..."raise the debt cieling". You people aren't falling for that are you? (and it was Wallace, not McGovern that I voted for as a kid. Sorry George's. So how did i decide that Jesus was the "man" best suited to lead? I asked my war-monger dad and grandpa about God one day...they just laughed at me just as folks do on thei blahg. So i kept pestering my dad, who finally got tired of it. So one day he handed me a bible and an old drafting set and said "here, you figure it out." So i did. I figured out that Jesus was the greatest man who ever walked the face of the earth, and that he is in fact the som of the true living God. So why doesn't God step in right now and fix this mess? Let me know if you want the answer and I'll give it to ya. Just ask for "mr. knowitall". he he
