Latex Casey Anthony mask fetches almost $1 million on eBay

A big spender on eBay shelled out almost $1 million to get inside Casey Anthony's head.

A Los Angeles eBay user called "prophunter" wound up with six rubber renderings of Anthony's face that had been used in a parody video and put one of them up for auction on eBay. That first mask  garnered a winning bid of $999,900 Wednesday. It beat out 104 other bids that started at $25 on  Monday.

In the description field for the item, the seller billed it as "possibly the most frightening mask on the planet."

The mask's expression is, well, expressionless, capturing the image that became a national obsession over the course of Anthony's almost six-week trial for the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony was acquitted on July 5, drawing the vocal ire of crowds outside the courthouse, social media users and television personalities nationwide.

On HLN's Showbiz News Tonight on Wednesday, Popeater.com columnist Rob Shuter pronounced then-active bidding "tasteless, but it is capitalism."

For comparison's sake, the most expensive set of Charlton Heston's stone tablets from "The Ten Commandments" fetched $87,000 at Christie's in 1995, which would be a little more than $120,000 today.

The money is probably going to Casey Anthony through the anonymity of ebay. She probably modeled for the mask. The buyer is probably someone who will will come out of the woodwork later and write a book or do a movie and make it look like they didn't get paid for it.

And eBay made a cool $90,000 off that... if the mask actually gets paid for... which I SERIOUSLY doubt.

My thoughts exactly! They could probably get one made that's a little more true to her likeness for a small fraction of the price. RIDICULOUS!

It sickens me that she got away with killing her baby and now she is famous and going to make money from it. It just shows how sad our society truly is, and how unjust our justice system has become. Here is to hoping there is a God, so that there is a hell that she will burn in for eternity.

Give it up, let it go. You have one life, try to enjoy it and stop focusing so much on someone else. It's eating you up.

Just how is she getting money from her daughters death? I've heard people mention money over and over but haven't read a thing where that's actually the case.

Why would anyone pay $1M for a mask they could create for $10 using paper mache?

Another reason why we should be taxing the rich even more, because they have more money than they know what to do with!

The auction and final bids were fake. Right now the maker is laughing because they didn't believe that someone like CNN would be gullible enough to pick up the story and get them free advertising to actually sell the masks for realistically high prices (not $1,000,000, but maybe $1000). I love how CNN reports that it "fetched" that money as if it was a legitimate done deal.

Um , she is a real beauty . alot of people think her combo of skin color, "attractiveness", youth and middle class upbringing saved her from a conviction. very rare for someone on trial for murder to have all 4 of those qualities. too much for the jury to handle i suppose

There's no way the bidder is going to pay the auction. It was probably just some kids starting a bidding war. All that's going to happen is the buyer will get negative feedback and the seller will relist the mask. It'll probably sell for $50 or $60.

Yes, I saw that yesterday, there were many bid retractions. Let's see if they really pay up. Many bidders did not have a significant number of ebay transactions to make them appear credible.
