Officials: Jihadi literature found in arrested soldier's backpack

[Updated at 1:34 p.m.] Jihadi literature was found in a backpack belonging to Army Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, who said he wanted to attack soldiers at Fort Hood, two law enforcement officials said.

[Updated at 12:58 p.m.] A soldier arrested near Fort Hood, Texas told investigators that he wanted to attack Army soldiers outside Fort Hood, a law-enforcement official said.

[Updated at 12:06 p.m.] Read a full story on the incident at Fort Hood here.

[Updated at 11:16 a.m.] The soldier suspected of having bomb-making materials near Fort Hood, Texas, is expected to face federal charges, possibly as early as Thursday afternoon, a federal law-enforcement official said.

[Updated at 11:13 a.m.] A statement on the Fort Hood website acknowledged Pfc. Naser Abdo's arrest but said it had no connection to the base.

"We are aware at this time that Killeen Police Department arrested a soldier yesterday. The incident leading to the arrest did not occur on Fort Hood and the soldier was not a Fort Hood based soldier," the statement said.

Abdo was assigned to Fort Campbell in Kentucky.

Abdo refused to deploy to Afghanistan on grounds of his religion and had put in the paperwork to be discharged as a conscientious objector. The Army approved his request, but he was then charged with child pornography and went AWOL, the official said.

"We have two things that I believe make us American, and that's freedom of religion and freedom of choice," he said in an interview last year.

He said he had to remain true to Islam.

"I've come to the conclusion that the consequences I would face by refusing deployment are a lot less than the consequences I would face should I go. I don't think I would be able to live with myself if I deployed," he said.

Abdo had put in the paperwork to be discharged as a conscientious objector at Fort Campbell. The Army approved his request, but he was then charged with child pornography and went AWOL, the official said.

CNN spoke with Abdo in 2010 when he was trying to be discharged as a conscientious objector.

Watch what he had to say about the issue:

[Updated at 11:00 a.m.] Texas police arrested a U.S. soldier who went AWOL this month after being charged with possessing child pornography, a Defense Department official told CNN Thursday.

Pfc. Naser Abdo was assigned to Fort Campbell in Kentucky but was arrested in Killeen, Texas, near Fort Hood, the military base where a 2009 shooting spree left 13 people dead and 32 others wounded.

Killeen police received a call from a gun shop owner about a suspicious man in the store who was asking questions about 40-caliber ammunition and then bought three boxes of 12-gauge ammunition and a magazine for a pistol, the defense official said. He paid cash and left in a cab. He then went to a surplus store and allegedly bought a military uniform.

FBI agents searching the soldier's hotel room found gunpowder, shotgun shells, a pressure cooker, 18 pounds of sugar, four magazines and ammunition, the defense official said. The FBI is investigating the case.

How a character such as this could have gotten into the military to begin with, is a question I would put to the US Army. It’s hard to imagine how even a cursory background check and psychological profile wouldn’t have revealed what an unstable individual this is. CK

And you know what his background checks and testing showed...how??? Oh, yeah...you don't. You're just guessing after the fact and complaining about what you've imagined in your own head.

Plus I gather that, in your world, no one EVER changes their mind or their faith or their convictions, right? Weird world you think you live in.

Just an honest question ... how many MORE US soldiers and civilians have to die before the military powers that be start taking longer and harder looks at Muslim soldiers?

I am NOT asking for Gestaop tactics .. just a better, more complete review of Muslim soldiers (Heck .. ALL soldiers) and any and all questionable behavior?? (Hitting extremeist websites ... buying bomb making material ... etc) I just don't want people a hair's breadth away from snapping a mental twig having access to weapons and training that could wind up costing a lot MORE people their lives.

Common sense shouldn't be such a rare commodity these days.

What is the core teaching of the KORAN? = World domination by the sword, any means really.
Who is the enemy of ALL MUXLIMS? = Infidels or, NON MUXLIMS

      GET IT?

      ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!

Here are some statements from the KING MUZLIM HEARINGS YESTERDAY. Note what happened the so called MODERATE Muzlim when he spoke out against the hard core Al Shabbab recruiter that was in a Minnisota Mosque recrutiing American Muzlims. This is why YOU NEVER HERE ANYTHING FROM THE MODERATES, they BEATEN BY THE OTHER MUZLIMS FOR NOT FOLLOWING THE KORAN! GET IT!?

This month, an al-Shabaab recruiter pleaded guilty to recruiting a large group of Muslims in Minneapolis, “At mosques,” and without any known protest by mosque leaders. A top al-Shabaab leader in Somalia supervised this recruiting.

When one cleric spoke out against al-Shabaab inside the Minneapolis mosque where many of the missing young Somali-American men had once worshipped, he was physically assaulted, according to police.

If he is a PFC in the Army he hasn't been in but maybe a year, so how was his concience clear enough to join and take a military paycheck knowing we were at war with Muslim countries and in all likelihood would go to a hot zone? Make him pay back all the money he was paid.

Well Terri if you knew ANYTHING about the Army, you would know that there are MANY PFC's who have been in well over a year!! I was a PFC for almost two years before I became a SPC and I have a girl i work with who is a PFC and has been in since 2008! Some people lose rank or simply cant advance to the next one due to weight issues, PT fails, etc! So dont assume they dont know what its like. ALSO they KNEW what they were getting into. the war in Afghanistan has been going on for well OVER ten years!!! It was NO secret that he had a good chance to deploy to either Iraq or Afghanistan!! So please give me a break!! Makes us true soldiers look bad!! Freakin idiot!!

Amen! "But I only joind for the educational benefits." – remember that from the First Gulf War Army officer that refused to deploy – she didn't join to be deployed, she only wanted the $$ for her education. Sad thing really.

You're article is insensitive to this man's culture and I am offended as a result. When are we going to learn to be more open and accepting of this culture and it's norms? Come on folk's lighten up! Heck, it's only life.....

We lightened up too much and that is how we got ourselves into having enemies infiltrate our military.

Tell the victims of the Ft Hood tradegy LAST time to "lighten up" and see what they think? YOU might want to consider "waking up" and start realizing we VALUE life here. You obviously don't, "Heck, it's only life....." BTW, I am completed insulted and offended by your insensitive remarks and demeaning stupidity towards the rest of the civilized world. How you could possible determine that this is not a serious threat and worthy of people knowing about, is beyond reason.

He should be incarcerated and made to work to pay off the cost of training and feeding him as a US military personnel. Then let the Feds have him for a bomb making terrorist threat. He should then have to work to feed and house him in prison.

First of all, you should be aware of the obvious fact that when you enlist, you're going to to be deployed some place around the world at some point. Secondly, as many Muslims and our own Gov't likes to point out, we are not at war with Islam or Muslims but with those who use Islam to justify their terrorist acts. I wouldn't have signed off on his waiver in the first place.

Right on Marine! Make him deploy and when he refuesd court martial him. I would not classify him as AWOL but a DESERTER since he had NO INTENTION to return. Let the Feds prosecute him do his jail time and the military prosecute him for his crimes there, child p0rn, DESERTION, etc. Send this POS to jail and put him in general population so they know he is a child p0rn person and deserter--he will meet his "virgins" soon enough.

@Just My Tx Opinion – have to agree with you, the US Army needs to do a lot better job of screening their members (all members). I'm a Canadian citizen and I do not know even one American GI but I do know that the US Army has Muslim terrorists, Christian terrorists, KKK, white supremacist, etc. in and amongst themselves and that should not be happening, at least not to the point of missing someone such as this man. I'm sure our Canadian Army faces the same problems as well. there are lots of good citizens of all races/cultures/backgrounds that can do this job and do it well and for the right reasons but we need to make sure we screen out the whackos.

Do you honestly think that people will not lie to these recruiters? I mean come on, be realistic!!! Also people change and we can not predict what these people will be like once they joined. I have been in for 6 years now and I have changed as a person BUT i am mature enough to change for the better, but not every one thinks this way!!
