Officials: Jihadi literature found in arrested soldier's backpack

[Updated at 1:34 p.m.] Jihadi literature was found in a backpack belonging to Army Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, who said he wanted to attack soldiers at Fort Hood, two law enforcement officials said.

[Updated at 12:58 p.m.] A soldier arrested near Fort Hood, Texas told investigators that he wanted to attack Army soldiers outside Fort Hood, a law-enforcement official said.

[Updated at 12:06 p.m.] Read a full story on the incident at Fort Hood here.

[Updated at 11:16 a.m.] The soldier suspected of having bomb-making materials near Fort Hood, Texas, is expected to face federal charges, possibly as early as Thursday afternoon, a federal law-enforcement official said.

[Updated at 11:13 a.m.] A statement on the Fort Hood website acknowledged Pfc. Naser Abdo's arrest but said it had no connection to the base.

"We are aware at this time that Killeen Police Department arrested a soldier yesterday. The incident leading to the arrest did not occur on Fort Hood and the soldier was not a Fort Hood based soldier," the statement said.

Abdo was assigned to Fort Campbell in Kentucky.

Abdo refused to deploy to Afghanistan on grounds of his religion and had put in the paperwork to be discharged as a conscientious objector. The Army approved his request, but he was then charged with child pornography and went AWOL, the official said.

"We have two things that I believe make us American, and that's freedom of religion and freedom of choice," he said in an interview last year.

He said he had to remain true to Islam.

"I've come to the conclusion that the consequences I would face by refusing deployment are a lot less than the consequences I would face should I go. I don't think I would be able to live with myself if I deployed," he said.

Abdo had put in the paperwork to be discharged as a conscientious objector at Fort Campbell. The Army approved his request, but he was then charged with child pornography and went AWOL, the official said.

CNN spoke with Abdo in 2010 when he was trying to be discharged as a conscientious objector.

Watch what he had to say about the issue:

[Updated at 11:00 a.m.] Texas police arrested a U.S. soldier who went AWOL this month after being charged with possessing child pornography, a Defense Department official told CNN Thursday.

Pfc. Naser Abdo was assigned to Fort Campbell in Kentucky but was arrested in Killeen, Texas, near Fort Hood, the military base where a 2009 shooting spree left 13 people dead and 32 others wounded.

Killeen police received a call from a gun shop owner about a suspicious man in the store who was asking questions about 40-caliber ammunition and then bought three boxes of 12-gauge ammunition and a magazine for a pistol, the defense official said. He paid cash and left in a cab. He then went to a surplus store and allegedly bought a military uniform.

FBI agents searching the soldier's hotel room found gunpowder, shotgun shells, a pressure cooker, 18 pounds of sugar, four magazines and ammunition, the defense official said. The FBI is investigating the case.

Bottomline is we'll never be able to trust muslims. If you muslims don't like the complete hatred and criticism you have earned in the West, feel free to go back to your wonderful countries like Iran, Saudi and Somalia. They practice what you preach there.....NOT HERE.

Not only Muslims can be terrorists... As we all know Christians can be as well. The Oklahoma bomber and that Norwegian claimed to be. Some folks just take their beliefs too far. Not all Muslims and Christians are terrorists. Hitler was a Christian by the way, of course the church tried to distance themselves but he openly claimed he was devout.

True, but when you look at the numbers...we are taling 3-4 people out of how many recorded terrorist attacks? 3-4 people does not make an argument. Everyone is capable of anything. If you were taking a Statistics course, you would have to call those 3-4 outliers.

Yes Capiers... and communists/anarchists/atheists are quiet capable too..... Lets seen know we had the Bolshevik Russian and Cuban revolutions. James Lee shot up the Discovery Channel headquarters recently, Ted Kaczynski the UNA bomber, Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated President Kennedy, Leon Czolgosz (an anarchist) assassinated President McKinley. These were no small forgettable pieces of history...

being a pedophile is not against isllllllllam... in fact it is encouraged... aka normal custom.. but eating a pig is another thing... He never should have been allowed in the military.. to maintain TRUE to his religion he must kkkkilllll all infidels.... so by that one religious requirement he is not fit for duty in any military or police force. There is no need to make it easy for him to carry out this religious demand...

Al-Qaeda was never capable of carrying out attacks against Americans on our soil. FBI todate has no evidence that Osama or Al-Qaeda were behind 9/11 attacks.
There was this once aired video of Osama claiming responsibility which most Wesren media other than American discarded as doctored.
Listen to what the veteran BBC/ITN correspondent Alan Hart who has been investgating 9/11 attacks has to say. Catch his interview to BBC now on YouTube.

Try telling the hundreds on those planes that died when the plane impacted (you saw it on TV ...but you might have been 5 years old at the time) that it was the US that did it. All the terrorists on the Airport Security Videos shown bording the planes. Those men with ties to Al-Queda where shown going through airport security and getting on the planes. Those transponders routes were shown. You cannot fake that. You cannot convice me or any normal person that these men who hated America would conspire with Americans to do this, you are a complete fool if you believe all of that.

I tink this is a natural developement of years of abuse , discrimination and attempt of erradication . If you look arround you see that the only countries still occupied today are Arrabs and Muslims. The US will pay one day its interference in the Islamic world. We Muslims have lead the world before you for more than 1400 years and we did not invent any Arms of destruction "Atomic bomb, Clustor bombs and you name it, The reason for that is that our religion has prevented our scientists such as Ibn Sina , al Ghazali and others to build anything harmfull. What this solder has done is very vry tiny thing beside what the Zionist are doing every day to the Muslims in particular and humanity as a whole in general. I'm willing to debate with any one who thinks can proove me wrong!!!

Judaism is the oldest religion on the plant. Next came Jesus and you have the birth of Christianity. It was not until 600 A.D that Islam was born from Muhammed (when the word was given to him). Your religion of Islam does not respect Christans nor Jews. You think we (according to Muhammad's word) will all convert or be destroyed. How can you claim to be peaceful when all you want to do is control the world by taking it over. Your religion brought the fight to our doors and has for decades. How many arab nations were dancing in the streets when 9/11 occured? That was NOT the first attack on the US, but it was the last, because at that moment, we drew a line in the sand and said NO MORE! So if you dont like us in your face or in your country, then maybe you need to learn to leave well enough alone. In the infamous words of Will Smith "Dont start nothing, there wont be nothing".

We all know it's not that you didn't want to develop those things, it's that you couldn't. You guys are still living in caves and walking barefoot on dirt streets with little or no food. If you stopped fighting us, we'd all be better off including Muslims. The western world was extremely tolerant of muslims until you declared JIHAD

maybe your scientists should go around explaining the moral implications of flying planes into buildings, building suicide bombs and generally being jerks to all the islamic folk that don't adhere to the same "quality" of religion you seem to grip so tightly.

More Islamic supremacy, intimidation, victimization and arrogance. Muslims dug Islam's grave as soon as Muhammad claimed he was a prophet and began to go public with his "revelations" – they actually bought it. His teachings continue to haunt us today. He murdered scores violently, attacked convoys, ordered assassinations, stole booty and women and continually threatened those who he could afford to threaten. Islam's demise lays within. Look at sectarian violence, terrorism and extreme sharia after Muhammad's death. These are problems Muhammad created, not the west; and it lives on today. No one can agree on interpretation or practice and it's those that foster Muhammad warlord and domination practices that brings others to Muslim lands because no other Muslims really seem to want to get rid of the evil they say tarnishes Islam. Don't blame the West, these issues have been ongoing from the get-go and instead of correcting the issues it's easy to blame others for social strife and embarrassingly dismal relative success in the year 2011 when so many nations are lightyears beyond. Muslims need to demonstrate accountability (no blame shifting) and deal with these problems so we can get rid of these setbacks in progress Islam fosters today. And by the way, Islam didn't rule the world for over 1400 years. Muhammad was a thug. He did some good but he also did A LOT of bad. It discredits Islam, "the perfect religion", with what we see as today's Islam and undermines any remotely rational thought that Islam could have actually come from a God. In truth, I wish Muhammad had been a still born or maybe had access to mental thearpy those 1400 years ago so he could have worked out his issues with seeing angels, claiming to be a prophet and scores of other crazy "experiences" he claimed to have. Muhammad's character and behavior later in life is evidence enough to make it blindingly obvious that the guy was a farce.

@Wendy...I don't think Judaism is the oldest religion on the're just going by the modern/Western definition of religion. There are Pagan religions, Eastern religions, Greco-Roman religions, Egyptian religions that pre-date Judaism by hundreds, if not thousands of years.
