Man accused of plotting Fort Hood attack to appear in court

An AWOL Muslim American Army private arrested after buying bomb-making supplies is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo will appear before a civilian magistrate judge in Waco, Texas, at 11 a.m. (noon ET). The specific charges against him will be unsealed following his appearance, according to court officials.

Killeen police arrested Abdo, 21, on Wednesday after a gun store employee tipped them that Abdo's behavior raised red flags when he purchased six pounds of smokeless gunpowder and other supplies.

FBI investigators who searched his hotel room found enough material for two bombs, a Defense Department official said.

"Military personnel were a target of this suspect," Killeen Police Chief Dennis Baldwin told reporters on Thursday.

Killeen is home to Fort Hood, the same military post where a 2009 shooting spree left 13 people dead. Another Muslim American soldier, Maj. Nidal Hasan, has been charged in those killings.

Asked how close Abdo may have come to pulling off an attack, Baldwin said, "I can tell you that we would probably be here today giving you a different briefing had he not been stopped."

We have a serious problem here... when a soldier refuses to fight because the enemy has the same religion should never be allowed to join army in the first place.
Just imagine if all US army starts doing that, we will only have few atheist soldiers left.
Before anyone joins army, the first oath should be to serve the nation regardless of who the enemy is.

Can anyone really blame this man for doing what he did? After all, he is a Muslim. I'm no Muslim but even I resent the U.S. occupation of both Afghanistan and Iraq as we have no right at all even to be in these countries!!!!

      That's the point.
If the guy was an Iraqi or Afghanese, it'd make sense.
The war is not a religious, it is against country and army should not bring up religion in the middle.

@ruffnutt, i live in Killeen, living and working 10 minutes from FT. HOOD... and if your child or any family member were hurt or even killed you would probably have a very different perspective on what this IDIOT was going to try and do..noone deserves to die behind ideals...he refuses to fight in a war that he knew was he was going ot have to fight in..wasn't a surprise to him that a war was going on. but on the other hand he is willing to kill his fellow soldiers, some of whom JUST MIGHT BE MUSLIMS

this guy is a coward and has a mental defect. his plans were treasonous and should be delt with as such. the gun shop owner on the other hand is a hero. anybody who thinks shooting up a military base is justified in any way should get a visit from the fbi. those men and women are americans!

I am AMAZED why our army recruiters do not ask these guys to sign on the dotted line that they will NEVER be CONSCENTIOUS OBJECTORS on any grounds (RELIGIOUS or OTHERWISE) before they are even inducted. WHY NOT?

awol and mass homicide are 2 diffrent things. forget for a min. this guys sad excuse for wanting to leave the army, he was facing consequences of the actions he took against his employer (the army/ jail time) and wanted revenge. if he had been fired for stealing from wal mart the end result would have been the same. so coward wants outta the army cause he found allah, when he cant get his way he seeks revenge. religon politics nationality dont play a part here. he is a disgruntled employee not a terrorist. atleast they have the death penalty in Tex. btw next time you order a drink have a bin ladden its just two shots and a splash of water! god bless america and bring the troops back home!

    Nonsense.
July 1995 in the town of Srebernica the worst case of 'gendercide' im modern history took place. Thousands of muslim young Bosnian men were separated from women & massacred while we & UN Peacekeepers looked on.
