F-bomb in valedictorian's speech heard 'round the world

Global news outlets and blogs in Asia have focused this week on a young woman who graduated top of her class at a prestigious college in Singapore. Except they aren't raving about the student's accomplishments. They're abuzz with a bad word she dropped in her graduation speech, according to Singapore's Straits Times.

"We f–king did it!" Trinetta Chong exclaimed to congratulate her peers at Nanyang Technical University's 2011 graduating ceremony. The 23-year-old's remark came after what a local reports called a "rousing" six-minute speech. A video of the speech was uploaded to YouTube on Friday and viewed, as of 12:30 p.m. ET Monday, more than 4,000 times.

Chong has apologized for the remark as has the school, according to Yahoo Singapore. "(The line) really reflected how I felt at that time, and I think it resounded with other students from our graduating class too," she said.

There may be little reason to worry about her or the graduates of NTU. The Straits Times recently published a story focusing on another graduate of the school who is making $20,000 a month.

Tell you what, Madame Royale. If you show me a Tea Partier who does not use the f-word, I'll show you a flying turtle!

She used it once, to tell the graduating batch, that they effin did it. They graduated from university and that's a huge milestone for any young person. It's not like her entire speech was littered with the f-word. Once. Once. And technically, she used the word but she wasn't swearing. Before anyone starts judging her for it, please, at least say that you graduated valedictorian in a top university and had worked your mighty ass off to be half as good as her. And please, don't use Jesus like you're holier than thou. That's blasphemy.

      "Totally out of place"

      Dude – it's freaking college...

      They're JUST WORDS.

If I tell you to "jump off a cliff", how is that different than "jump off that fcuking cliff" ? It's not – you just get your panties in a bunch over adjectives.

More reasons we're much too serious in this fcuking world.

This girl may have done well in school, but she just showed the world that she is a fool and demonstrated the gross irreverence, foolishness and lack of descretion of this present generation.

To scdad: don't blame invasions on civilizations and individual citizens, it's government leaders (some not democratically elected, hint GWB) that are responsible for all wars.

To Bob and Dee, don't generalize. I recognize we have different priorities, but tell me you do not differ from your parents and especially your grandparents. Some of us still have a ton of respect for you old folks but realize there is no sense is getting your panties in a wad over an F-bomb. Worry about your stock old man, not some, obviously very intelligent, girl’s choice of words.

I believe the term is "kudos" which they deserve, perhaps you are missing the underlying implications of such a statement by a a female in a male dominant society.

language is something to be used creatively.. the F-Bomb is way overused as a way of being "cool" – which is ALSO overused...come up with something worthwhile! Use a word that shows your intelligence – not your ignorance!
