Bin Laden Group to build world's tallest tower

Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding has hired Saudi Bin Laden Group to build the world's tallest skyscraper in Jeddah, Gulfnews.com reports.

Jeddah Tower will be 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) tall and will contain a Four Seasons luxury hotel, apartments, condominiums and offices that overlook the Red Sea, Financial Times reported.

Kingdom Holding is paying Bin Laden Group, one of the world's largest construction companies, about $1.2 billion to take on the five-year project, according to Financial Times.

Saudi Bin Laden Group was founded in 1931 by Muhammad Awad bin Laden, the billionaire father of terrorist Osama bin Laden. It built much of Saudi Arabia's highways and infrastructure, as well as entire districts and cities.

The company constructed additions to the Muslim nation's two holiest mosques in Mecca and Medina. It operates throughout the Middle East and was chosen in 1964 to reclad the golden Dome of the Rock mosque in Jerusalem.

Over the years, Saudi Bin Laden Group has expanded into a conglomerate that includes engineering, manufacturing and telecommunications, according to business analysis site Hoovers.com.

Osama bin Laden, the 17th of 52 children, inherited part of his father's fortune, but his radical activities led the family to disown him in 1994.

Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, a nephew of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, announced the tower building contract Tuesday. He owns 95% of Kingdom Holding, according to Financial Times.

When completed, Jeddah Tower will easily surpass Dubai's 828-meter (2,717-foot) Burj Khalifa as the world's tallest building.

The Chicago firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture designed the project and will oversee its development, Gulfnews.com reported. Adrian Smith was one of Burj Khalifa's designers when he was with Skidmore Owings and Merrill.

Being an engineer myself I know there is no way a plane or 2 for that matter could bring the building down unfortunately. Ask any structural Engineer he/she will comfirm that

Joe, I'm glad there are an increasing number of intelligent people out there like yourself that understand the WTC was imploded. I just hope some day those responsible pay with their lives.

Anyone who believes the conspiracy theories that the WTC was imploded needs to get their head examined, and then further tested for possible admittance into an asylum. THE BUILDINGS WERE BROUGHT DOWN BY THE PLANES CRASHING INTO THEM, END OF STORY. Nevermind the lame excuse for "proof" that you conspiracy theorists provide (i.e. the puffs of smoke appearing as the buildings go down); what possible motive would there have been for the government to bring the towers down? Were they in on it with Bin Laden?

How is it ironic? That Osama's family, which has nothing to do with terrorism, is continuing their business as normal? I'm not sure why this is news other than to stir up headlines. Ooooooooh the ghooooost of bin Laaaadeeeen is coming baaaaack to build the wooooorld's llllaaaargest buuuuiiilllllddddiiiing. Really, people? Are you that stupid?

The Bin Laden family disowned Osama in 1994 for everyone saying to fly an airplane in it. Theres no connection.

Obviously, the Bin Laden family has taken no shame from the exploits of Osama – hence, they kept the name. i thought that their culture would have dictated otherwise – and if they truly have any remorse for his actions, they would rename the business. You can't just 'take their word for it that they never communicated with him...DUH!

Actually Joe, it's quite simple to bring down a building with a plane. Let me illustrate how it works.

Hold 150lbs over your head. It's well supported. Now, heat your midsection to 1000 degrees F with burning Jet A fuel. Chances are your midsection will weaken until it fails and the 150lbs above you will find its way to the floor.

By no means do I mean to immolate you, but people who are masquerading ignorance by quoting youtube video soundbites about civil engineering require visceral examples to illustrate simple physical concepts like thermal softening of steel.

Funny you should say that because at 1000 degrees steel would be perfectly fine mostly due to the scientific fact that steel does not expand, soften or give way up until around 2570 degrees. So I guess you must be very well informed on the thermal properties of steel. Ignorance is bliss and just because the media says so it doesn't mean it's true.

I don't think it takes a psychiatrist, like myself, to point out the obvious and rather pathetic phallic rivalry here. These men are like little boys comparing the size of their genitals: "Mine is bigger than yours! Ha! Ha!" Unfortunately, unlike little innocent children, these men are playing a deadly game with tragic consequences that we have already seen. There is no question but that the tallest building, the World Trade Center, was chosen to be 'cut down to size'. And now they are scrambling to erect a bigger one of their own. They should be ashamed at how juvenile and transparent this all is!

So because you are a psychiatrist you can read the minds of Saudi Arabians? Get a grip. I'm a chemical engineer so does that mean I know exactly how they're going to structure the building...

Humans have always tried to build the largest, tallest, and fastest. That's just human nature. What really looks pathetic is Americans suddenly pointing fingers and criticizing others for doing the same thing we have always done. Believe me, if the US was capable of building the world's tallest building, we would do so. However, since we are incapable of building it, all we can do is pathetically criticize others who do so.
