Virginia Tech lifts alert after report of possible gunman

[Update 3:07 p.m.] Virginia Tech has lifted an alert on campus hours after three youths reported that someone may have had a gun there, according to a post on the school's website.

"There will continue to be a large police presence on campus today," the announcement said. "Police
have not received nor discovered additional information about a person possibly carrying a weapon beyond that reported this morning.

"The university community may resume normal campus activity. Only Blacksburg campus classes have been cancelled today."

[Update 11:16 a.m.] Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum warned students and others to continue to stay indoors as police search for a person who may be carrying a weapon on campus.

Several people have been questioned but police have not apprehended anyone, Flinchum said.

[Update 11:09 a.m.] No one is in custody and the campus safety alert remains in effect, Virginia Tech's campus police chief says.

[Update 10:31 a.m.] Virginia Tech is in lockdown as authorities look for a man three youths said may have had a weapon, possibly a handgun.

The white male was described as having light brown hair and being 6 feet tall and was walking in the direction of a volleyball court. The man was wearing a blue and white striped shirt, gray shorts and brown sandals. He had no glasses or facial hair, according to the report.

[Original post, 10:18 a.m.] Virginia Tech, the site of a 2007 massacre, has issued an alert saying someone is possibly carrying a weapon on campus.

Regular classes aren't in session at the moment, but there is summer school. The university in Blacksburg, Virginia, is asking people on campus to stay inside and secure doors. The person was spotted near Dietrick Dining Hall.

In April 2007, Cho Seung-Hui, 23, shot dead 32 people on campus before killing himself.

Meanwhile thousands of armed men continue to roam the streets of Chicago and shoot down children and innocent bystanders. Police remain unfazed.

How could a person carrying a gun entered a campus without the security knowing? Hope nothing bad happens today. Let's all be safe and pray...

There is no entrance to a University–it's not a theme park. You just walk in. Our University has buses that go through all day.

To all of you who think you know right from wrong... You don't my brother IS in the ARMY he had been over to IRAQ & AFGHANISTAN within the past 2 years & he could've died but he's still alive. He & his comrades shoot guns because they are military but people who aren't military don't have the right to shoot others.

What does your brother's profession have to do with your opinion? I'm a USAF officer, so I think I'm better than you...isn't that logical?

What does your brother being over seas have to do with anything?! U don't get a cookie. Not just ur brother is in the military . And regular civilians deserve the right to carry a gun if they get a license and trained it's not everyone else's fault there are nutz in this world all we can do is try to prevent tragedies like school shooting and stuff from happening but if someone broke into my home or tried hurting me by anyway I would want some protection . Not just pepperspray. . But for ppl who don't want to use a gun don't have to wasp spray is better and will make the individual go blind. All we can do Is just hope nothing bad will happen but ppl still need to remember there are crazy out there

What does your brother have to do with this situation? Two completely different senarios – and if you had ever served in a combat zone, you would know that there is nothing "right" about having to shoot another person. If all our citizens were armed, this situation would have already resolved itself – given the intent to due harm was present. It's good to be proud of your brother, but don't use his service to make your public statement.

What does this have to do with the NRA? We have the right to bear arms. We also, however, have the task of being responsible of we choose to do so.

People need to treat others the way they want to treat otherwise the people who are being mistreat will do something harmfull to innocence people. It come to my understanding that those who killing people in larg number the are the one who been victimise and they trun deadly when they feel mistreatment is taking place. Please stop BULLYING at school in our Communities.

The children were plants from the Brady Campaign. They were told to lie. It is another attempt to try and take away our given right To keep and Bear Arms.

Two quick is perfectly legal to carry a handgun in this state (okay...if it's IN your hand, that's a different story)...even ON a campus, and there's nothing (other than the word of some teenager) saying the guy even existed...why is this news?
