Virginia Tech lifts alert after report of possible gunman

[Update 3:07 p.m.] Virginia Tech has lifted an alert on campus hours after three youths reported that someone may have had a gun there, according to a post on the school's website.

"There will continue to be a large police presence on campus today," the announcement said. "Police
have not received nor discovered additional information about a person possibly carrying a weapon beyond that reported this morning.

"The university community may resume normal campus activity. Only Blacksburg campus classes have been cancelled today."

[Update 11:16 a.m.] Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum warned students and others to continue to stay indoors as police search for a person who may be carrying a weapon on campus.

Several people have been questioned but police have not apprehended anyone, Flinchum said.

[Update 11:09 a.m.] No one is in custody and the campus safety alert remains in effect, Virginia Tech's campus police chief says.

[Update 10:31 a.m.] Virginia Tech is in lockdown as authorities look for a man three youths said may have had a weapon, possibly a handgun.

The white male was described as having light brown hair and being 6 feet tall and was walking in the direction of a volleyball court. The man was wearing a blue and white striped shirt, gray shorts and brown sandals. He had no glasses or facial hair, according to the report.

[Original post, 10:18 a.m.] Virginia Tech, the site of a 2007 massacre, has issued an alert saying someone is possibly carrying a weapon on campus.

Regular classes aren't in session at the moment, but there is summer school. The university in Blacksburg, Virginia, is asking people on campus to stay inside and secure doors. The person was spotted near Dietrick Dining Hall.

In April 2007, Cho Seung-Hui, 23, shot dead 32 people on campus before killing himself.

To Dave, If there were a hundred Military members, or former Police Officers or Actual Armed Security that are expert trained on Firearms there with concealed carry permits that had their weapons, would you be this scared? Doubtful, as you know there would be nearly zero chance of a criminal doing harm before being taken out by a public servant who is trained to protect others. Think on it a bit, what your school is doing is creating an environment ripe for criminals by not allowing honest people to allow to protect themselves.

unfortunatly most people are asleep. They are either asleep or dumbed down by floridated water.
They are not awake enough to see the other hand. Its like a fake move in a football game.

They have not watched the movie 1984. They sound just like the characters in that movie.
Some kids will soon turn their dad or mome thinking they are doing service to their, well, gods.

well come to the begining of nightmares brought to you by the u nseen spirits and demons.

jimmydidit – I'm with you but you look like an idiot when you say there are only 1000 gun related deaths a year.
There was 29K in 2004. Hell there was almost 1000 in the state LA alone.

Misrepresenting facts along with all caps will not help bring people to your argument.

Cars are unintentionally deadly guns are intentionally deadly, there is a difference there, even you need to admit that......HOWEVER (see I'm serious now) I do think anyone with a permit should be aloud to carry, and I agree with the idea that just that uncertainty alone will deter gun violence. Gun stores a not usually the victims of robberies, because they have guns too, and YOU NEVER KNOW.

I understand how you feel and the anger/annoyance/frustration about people who do this. But it's comments like that one that do not help these people; it urges them on, maybe even triggers them to "snap".

My prayers are with those on campus at V Tech and their families. I hope this gets nipped in the bud before anything starts.

Outlawing guns only takes them away from people who follow the law. If a criminal is already going to commit murder, what does he care about a weapons charge on top if it? Meanwhile, law abiding citizens would be left defenseless. Stupid.

If anyone thinks a CCW Permit holder is not responsible, and it is harmful to carry on school grounds, think of this, do you ever hear of Criminals holding up a Police Station? Gun tolerance is a big deterrence to crime, CCW Permit holders are trained and knowledgeable on how to defend, many of which are former Military, Police or even Armed Security. Criminals love areas that have weapons bans! Because it eliminates honest people from defending themselves... and go right in for the taking. Think 3D about things before you accept others opinions on how to think of something

As a current college student, it's always in the back of my head that something like this could easily happen at my school. It's an unfortunate fact that college campus's aren't safe, not for lack of trying, but they're just too big and there are too many people on them. I hope this is a false alarm and VT doesn't have to go through this nightmare again!
