The 22 Navy SEALs killed when their helicopter was shot down in Wardak province were part of a mission to go after a known Taliban leader directly responsible for attacks against American troops, two U.S. military officials have told CNN.
Get up to date on the incident that happened Saturday in Afghanistan
According to new information CNN's Barbara Starr obtained, the SEALs who were killed had been called in to assist another unit on the ground pinned down in a firefight. The officials did not know if the Taliban leader had been killed. They declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of ongoing operations in the crash area.
Coalition forces remain at the crash site in order to remove all the wreckage, and prevent insurgents from taking photos of the scene to use as a "propaganda tool," one official said. Investigators will be examining the wreckage, but the same official said the crash was catastrophic that there may be little to glean from it. The United States had specific reports of enemy weapons activity in the same area at the time of the crash, so officials continue to assume that the Chinook was shot down. One of the officials also said that while the Chinook helicopter has been described as a "conventional" aircraft, it did have all the latest electronic equipment and that the crew had special operations training.

Wondering what Bush said when he saw the news? I bet he just smiled and went on to finish his breakfast.
Roedy Green, Say what and Snorcle;
Well said!!! And the new reality is this, the Taliban now have new weapons! RPG my ass. Just like Uncle sam gave them the stinger against the USSR, someone has given them something to unleash hell on uncle sam! People, we will be seeing more of this type of defence.
If that was only true CNN Wire, but I'm afraid that's only wishful thinking on your part. In fact, the world does need a counterweight to the malicious NATO forces but unfortunately, there is none so far and that saddens me!
was geo. washington a terrorist? how about john adams? you fake patriot tory punks should be rounded up and put in camps. and yes, my real name is michelle.
Admiral when are you guys going to learn? Why would you put more than 4 – 6 SEAL's on one chopper? You should have them spread out on about 4 to 6 choppers...This was stupid and one of you has to go...Where were the fast movers? You guys should have softened the target hard before you sent in any slowing moving lumbering pieces of crap...
my thoughts exactly...why in heck would they put that many valuble men and women on some slow moving chopper when there is heavy artillery in the area...
Whats going on? you should have never put that many seals on one chopper. im a vet with time in dessert storm and i dont seem to understand you guys method of thinking. you are suppose to take care of our troops not loose them!!!!!!!!
BIG MIKE – THEY'RE AZZHOLES, THATS WHY.......THEY DONT HAVE LOVED ONES SERVING OVER THERE SO THEY DONT CARE......THEY'RE UNDER "DADDY'S WING" AND ARE SAFE AND SOUND WHILE THESE BRAVE MEN GO INTO DEATH TRAPS...YES, THE SEALS LOVE DOING IT BECAUSE ITS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.....NO FEAR..... ITS GUYS LIKE THE SEALS WHO ARE KEEPING "DADDY'S BOYS" SAFE............RIP AND MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THEIR LOVED ONES
well done, all the american guys should die
"brave" men willing to die for stupid things is the one commodity every country has had in abundance since recorded history. whether they are seals, conquistadores, crusaders or terrorists, they have in common the willingness to kill their own citizens as well as those of others. good riddance.
I am guessing by your comment that you don't have friends or family in the military? Think before you speak, you heartless excuse for a human being!!
GOOBYN – your a jerk........may someone you love go there...............then lets see how quick you say good riddance.
Good post RuffNutt,thank you.

After reading of these post this country is full of p.o.s. I cannot believe what I have been reading whatever happens to this country you guys deserve it.
Just another reason we should GET OUT of these worthless countries! My understanding is that these soldiers were being rushed in to help some rangers who were pinned down? My concerns are those "leaders" that sent them into this and what, if any, planning was done? Rangers are specially trained and well equiped, but in reality are ONLY light infantry! Far to many times they have been sent into battle with the assumption that they are "invincealbe" and support or back up plans are non-exsistant. And WHY, so many Seals on one aircraft? Simple, we continually "underestimate" our enemy! Go ahead and put some "ARC LIGHT" strikes on these mountains and reduce them to nothing! One week of B-52's, B-1s, and B2s dropping "big" ordinance in these area's would "numb" anyone!
The reason they would put so many in one transport is beyond us I suppose but this president and whoever is around him have no freakin idea how to handle ANYTHING to do with the military, which was glaringly obvious with the way they broadcast who and how OBL was taken down. WTH! Now this... these soldiers are not pawns to be used in some political game. get your head out of your @ss and lead or get out of the way!! again I say to you posters that are saying unbelievable remarks about our soldiers you are p.o.s.
And Bush did not start this war the people who tore into our country did. dumb@s.s. all of that aside it was obama who said he was gonna get us out of it... who lied? who?
DROP THE BIG ONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
US Commanders who send 40 year old slow moving Chinooks into enemy fire fight zones should be kicked out of the Military . They are idiots.
