Report: Amazon tribe may have fallen victim to drug traffickers

Suspected Peruvian drug traffickers have destroyed a guard post protecting a recently discovered indigenous tribe in Brazil's Amazon rain forest, the aid group Survival International reports.

Aerial film and still images of the tribe were first shown to the world in February. The Brazilian government's National Indian Foundation established the guard station near the tribe's territory along Brazil's border with Peru to protect the Indians from outsiders.

Survival International said Monday that Brazilian authorities can now find no sign of the tribe.

"We think the Peruvians made the Indians flee. ... We are more worried than ever. This situation could be one of the biggest blows we have ever seen in the protection of uncontacted Indians in recent decades. It’s a catastrophe," Carlos Travassos, the head of Brazil's isolated Indians department, said in a Survival International statement.

Survival International reports the tribe's lands are near the Envira River, which Peruvian cocaine smugglers reportedly use as a route into Brazil.

Brazilian authorities report groups of men armed with machine guns and rifles are in the nearby forest, according to the aid group.

Authorities had recovered a drug trafficker's rucksack with a broken Indian arrow in it, Survival International reported.

"This is extremely distressing news. There is no knowing how many tribal peoples the drug trade has wiped out in the past, but all possible measures should be taken to stop it happening again. The world’s attention should be on these uncontacted Indians, just as it was at the beginning of this year when they were first captured on film," Survival International Director Stephen Corry said in a statement.

Look at Rome 2 thousand years ago, and look at these villages a few months ago. Monkeys dont evolve into humans.

I think this is a B.S. story. Before you all jump on me the last time I read a similar story about an "undiscovered tribe" the fact of the matter is that the tribe was actually discovered long ago but the group who released the photo did so to "raise awareness." We have no means of knowing whether or not what they say happened actually happened. This could be just another stunt.

As long as people keep buying drugs these murders will stay in business.

Any new ideas on how to get people to stop wanting to buy them? Everything that has been tried so far has only made things worse.
Prohibition kills far more people than the drugs themselves.

Then it looks like they'll be in business forever Douglas. I think we can all agree the War on Drugs has been a amassive failure. Might be time to re-think a new strategy.

if drugs were legalized, taxed and controlled by the government, then there would be no profit for drug dealers. Then this would not continue to happen.

Please don't comment without thought. Pushers don't watch the news to wipe out people. Whoever did this needs to die, but it wasn't because it was reported.

Yes that is the major problem that few wish to look at today and just keep aiding the problem with aid. Birth Control needs to be administered region wide for all who can not support themselves. When food laced with birth control is sent as aid to these Nations an imediate soulution to suffering is provided and a long term one as well.

Christianity, with all the atrocities and wars done in Christ's name, is certainly a major factor in Western recorded history.

Atheism, with all the atrocities committed to defamation of God by the likes of Milosevic, Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao Zedong (to name a few), has committed even more.

Where is the U.N. (United Nations) in protecting those tribes ? they're being wiped out and no one seems to be helping them from the threats encroaching on their lands.

I'm thinking the drugheads took them and made them process coke in one of their factories. They probably have the tribe thinking they are better off than they were before.

no one knows for sure if it is true or not! people are rude and others need to care to cause this could them one day and they wont be saved either cause no one cares. some of these tribes still exsist in other countries. all drugs should be stopped. if more people would care whats around them and how they treat others then the world wouldnt be the way it is now. people do this why... so they can control the world and show who is stronger. people on drugs pray on those that are weaker and take advantage of that. some might be forced to do it but you always have a choice and there is always a way out, you just have to look for it.

I know this is draconian and probably inhumane but, every drug trafficker captured should have their arms lopped off and then put back in society as beggars. I's wrong. But that never dawned on the traffickers that kill indigenous Indians with guns against arrows. That never dawned on European Settlers to the Americas when they killed many American Indians. That never dawned on the Spanish Conquistadors when the killed Mexican Indians. Excuse me well I lop my own arms off. Ugh! We just can't get away from our beastly mentality of conquering.

I am an old testament girl and I agaree with you. If there is a penalty, and I mean a harsh penalty the crime will stop. Who really wants to live in a world like that. Not me. If we take the profit out of the drug by decriminalizing it (not legalizing) there would be no reason for anybody to make it, sell it or abuse people with its power.
