Police 'put that dog down' after it kills pregnant California woman

Greg Napora of Pacifica, California, came home to a nightmare Thursday: His pregnant, lifeless wife lying on the ground, her face and torso injured from dozens of bites and one of the family pit bulls standing over her, according to CNN affiliates.

Though police say Darla Napora, 32, was pregnant, it's unclear how far along she was. Authorities responded to the suburban San Francisco home after receiving a call from the husband.

"When they arrived, they found the victim laying in her own front living room. She was not breathing, unresponsive and had major trauma to her upper body," Pacifica Police Capt. Dave Bertini told CNN affiliate KGO. "The husband stated that when he got home, at about noon, he found his wife with their pit bull hovering over her."

Kathy Carlson, 63, lives across the street from the white, single-story home where the attack occurred. She told the San Francisco Chronicle that Greg Napora was outside and visibly distraught when police arrived.

"He was in the driveway all frantic, yelling," Carlson told the paper. "He had blood on his hands, blood on his shirt and blood down his pants."

According to CNN affiliate KTVU, first responders tried to administer CPR to Darla Napora when the blood-covered 2-year-old male dog charged them. They shot the animal.

"The last thing we wanted to happen was for the dog to get out and start attacking bystanders or be loose in the neighborhood," Bertini told KGO. "So as soon as the dog got out of the backyard, the decision was immediately made to put that dog down, and that's why the dog was shot three times by two officers on scene."

The couple had had the dog since it was a pup. The Naporas owned another pit bull, a spayed 6-year-old, which is not believed to have been involved in the attack, police said. As a precaution, it was taken to Peninsula Humane Society for an examination.

Though San Francisco has a law that requires city residents to spay or neuter their pit bulls, Pacifica has no similar law, according to the Chronicle. The 2-year-old dog that mauled Darla Napora had not been neutered, police told local media.

Neighbors told the two television stations that the dogs appeared normal and well behaved in the past. A next-door neighbor told KTVU that the dogs would bark at each other, but when Darla Napora called them, they'd back down. They responded well to her, the neighbor said.

Another neighbor, Tom Lujan, told the station he thinks pit bulls are dangerous.

“I wouldn't have one, and I wouldn't want my family around one,” he said.

There have been no problems reported at the Napora household and no reason to expect the dog to attack someone, police said. Police said there were no prior problems at the Napora household, and no reason to expect the dog would attack.

An autopsy for Darla Napora and a necropsy for the pit bull are slated for Friday.

"Eventually we're going to find out if there's anything physically or medically wrong with the dog that may have caused this attack," Bertini told KGO. "We have already done an extensive interview with the husband, and there are follow up questions that we may ask in the future."

A safe dog is one that despite bad handling or training does not cause life-altering harm. All dogs have the potential to cause harm, but pit bulls have ever so much more potential.

And you shouldn't own a pit bull, or any type of dog.......since you obviously have no intellect or knowledge of canines! A little education goes a long way. There are actually over 40 breeds of dogs that are loosely grouped together and referred to as 'pit bulls' (Note: The American Pit Bull Terrier is the only one the actually has the term 'pit bull' in it's name. The APBT ( throughout history, have always been, and will continue to be, one of the most docile family-loving canines in existence. Do you even know what a pit bull looks like? Would you be able to spot one it a group of other dogs? Please vist – – and see if you can pick out the pit bull. Maybe you should spend a little less time reading CNN's shoddy stories (there's a reason I didn't use the word 'news') and a little more time on educational endeavors.

When animals are given more consideration than humans in our society something is wrong and lawmakers need to provide the protection for those that do not share this concept.

Pit bulls as well as most other large breeds of dogs are a danger to most other people other than their owners who don't think so.

If these folks want these types of dogs then they need to confine them and serious penalties need to be imposed on them when they are not.

Maybe something was wrong with the pregnant woman before the dog mauled her. She may have collapsed for medical reason and the dog was trying to get her to get up and was not able to without biting her.

very much could of happened like that. There was no eye witness to say what happened. There is many cases like this were no one seen what happened and the media over exaggerates with out real facts.

Dogs will attack other dogs that are having seizures, even ones they are bonded to. It's possible something like this happened, only this time to a person. Dog bites tend to be very poorly investigated.

Umm...Are you serious? She was found dead, insider her own house, with one of their two pitbulls standing over her. You think it's likely a random other large animal just dropped by to visit, mauled her, and ran off?

(Officers tried CPR tried to restart her heart, and as they did, the two-year-old unneutered male dog broke free and charged them.)
From another story about this the dog was clearly protecting her. I dont think this dog attacked her at all may have been trying to help her and biting to move her would be one way there dogs not people. She could of colapsed and died from something else. And yet the media has to over exaggerate this story like they do all storys with out proof and real facts.

Not to mention that directly after that statement, they note that the canine in question, was in the backyard. When emergency responders arrived, "they found the victim laying in her own front living room.". More shoddy journalism from CNN.

I don't get people who defend these dogs. They are a breed created by man to attack, and to fight. We created a monster and should make certain breeding is stopped. I'm tired of these stories. There are dozens of pit bulls in my neighborhood and it makes me fear for my Children's safety.

Rotweilers kill too. In fact both breeds, them and the German Shepard, all three are at the top of the list for most human fatalaties.

All three where bred to attack either other dogs or attack and harm humans. The problem is that each case is different. Pits are aggressive, and it takes a firm hand to keep them in line. But they really are one of the sweetest most playful breed of dog out there. You just have to know your dog and recognize their warning signals.

I had a labrador retriever who would get so excited and playful he would snap and nip at you. We would have to stop him. But he was also rescued from an abusive home so we understood

Wow!! You say dogs are born bad just because of their race. That is the same thing as racism. Dogs and humans are born with a clean slate. The People around them shape how they grow and how the behave. When the husband entered did he say the dog was eating her face off no! It was just by her. Actually Pit Bulls were called the Nanny Dog because of their great behavior with children. The lady probably collapsed or maybe the husband is using this as a coverup for something else. He was covered in blood not the dogs.

say waht – this is an incredibly ignorant perspective. it is not racist to acknowledge humans playing with mother nature and breeding dogs for all sorts of different purposes over hundreds of years. And the pit bulls are bred to kill, and to never back down.

You are an idiot. The story is not false. A few stupid pro-pitbull BLOGS (not news!) reported "neighbors" claimed she fell off a ladder. How the hell would they know? And the dog was nit "nudging her awake" for crying out loud, it had repeatedly bitten her face and chest. Sweet dog indeed. So glad they shot the UNneutered sob.

Why are people more interested and concerned about the damn dog? It killed a pregnant woman–two human beings! Everyone knows pit bulls are more aggressive than other dogs. • Ahhhh Reeaaaallly??

Pitbulls are not more aggressive than other dogs. They just have a huge mouth and teeth that can easily rip of rawhide. Chiuauas are way more violent but they have tiny mouths so they dont cause actually damage. So you are just talking out of your loose behind. Everyone should be equal!! You just follow a saad stigma for these poor dogs.

Your facts are inaccurate- in fact, the woman fell and hit her head – the dog was just standing by her nuzzling her and trying to wake her. The blood was from her hitting her head. A tragedy yes, but shame on you CNN and the other media outlets for immediately assuming the wrong thing and continuing to defame these dogs.
