Reports: Pakistan let Chinese inspect U.S. stealth copter

[Updated at 12:02 p.m.] Chinese military engineers likely got to examine the wreckage of the U.S. stealth helicopter that crashed during the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, according to news reports.

"We have reason to suspect China was given access, but we cannot confirm it definitively.  We have strong suspicions," a U.S. official told CNN.

Pakistani intelligence operatives likely gave the Chinese access to the wreckage, the New York Times reported, citing American officials and other intelligence sources.

The Chinese engineers were able to photograph the wreckage and take samples of the stealth skin that helps the chopper avoid radar detection, intelligence sources told the Financial Times.

When the aircraft crashed during the raid that killed the al Qaeda leader in May, Navy SEALs destroyed most of it to protect the technology. But the tail section remained mostly intact and it was that area that the Chinese engineers examined, according to the New York Times report.

U.S. intelligence is basing its opinion that the Chinese got access to the stealth copter on intercepted phone conversations, the Times reported.

A U.S. official says “we have reason to suspect China was given access but we cannot confirm it definitively. We have strong suspicions.”

Pakistani officials contacted by the New York Times refused comment on the matter. The Financial Times said a Pakistani official denied the accusations.

Both newspapers noted that China and Pakistan enjoy a longstanding military relationship.

The raid that killed bin Laden, staged without informing Pakistan, stoked tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan.

In July, the U.S. said it was withholding $800 million in aid to Pakistan.

"They've taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid which we're giving to the military, and we're trying to work through that," White House Chief of Staff William Daley said at the time.

Screw the Pakis and the Chinese. We should be trying to better our relationship with India. India at least is a working democracy and has more people and a functioning military with nuclear weapons. We will need India for the coming war with China. Because it is coming. It may be 20 years or longer but it will come. And when it does we will need strong allies like India on our side, not the backstabbing Pakis.

Quietly need to pullback from Pakistan and support India big time.. they don't need our money they just need some assistance with Intel and training. As for China.. we walk a fine line.. our intelligence services and military duel quietly and politely with unspoken rules while publicly we compete.

Chinese engineers working in US for corporations is the biggest threat to US, not wreckage in Pakistan.

What do people actually expect? Sure, there was a good reason to go in there and take out Osama...but the US was quite happy to trample all over other countries to get there...and even after they explained why (mitigation of leaks), the US still took "lick our bootheel" stamce.

The world is not the lackey and sycophants of the US...

And Pakistan is no ally at all. Unforgivable breach of trust. Like some petulant child performing a spiteful action. No more money for Pakistan. Let them get taken over by fundamentalists. Mutually Assured Destruction worked with the Soviets, and if any future Pakistan attacks us via proxies, they should know that the destruction to follow won't be mutual.

Susan, forget any border, any hiding place that he hid at. We had every right to go in and get him and if that country wants to deny it then we go behind their back. Pakistan didn't lose thousands of people and billions of dollars....we did. But they will now because they wanted to harbor the world's most wanted terrorist. They should be lucky we didn't bomb the whole country after that stunt.

Trust was breached when US went in unilaterally. Funny how FT ran a story citing unnamed sources with no proof and it becomes a fact.

Trample over other countries? What countries did we trample over other than those that were harboring the world's most wanted terrorist?

Pakistan was hiding the most wanted man in the world. If they won't deal with it, then their borders will get trampled.

The most advance helicopter with stealth capability flying in the dark night on a small village and gun down by some Osama's "bodyguard" without radar and less sophisticated weapon; that tells a lot about how "high tech" is this piece of toy. It maybe came out of some toy factory in China.

That Helicopter was not gunned down. Please find all the facts before you B.S. around. I think it is quite obivous that with idiots like you in this country, it is not surprised that this country is in big trouble !!!

Actually, it crashed because of a peculiarity of the airflow around the vehicle as it descended into the walled compound. Read up on things before you comment.

It wasn't downed by enemy fire. It was downed by a mechanical failure.

Also, the stealth was to avoid being detected by Pakistan, who have an Air Force and air defenses...

Time to abandon the armpit of the world - Pakistan. It is high time that we support a real American partner, India. Pakistan is not worthy of the aid we have been giving them and it is high time for the U.S. to let loose an ingrate!

They already built a stealth jet, so this isn't a big deal. Neither will be of high quality, or in the numbers that the U.S. has.

Peace loving??? The jihadists interpret the Koran to say to kill all infidels. How is that even the slightest bit peace loving? Also, when the American (or any other nation's) forces go back, these jihadists resort to terrorize their own people, as the Taliban did in Afghanistan.
Also, you derail Christianity and America as violent. Now, one does not see Catholics and Protestants trying to kill each other (as compared to the Sunni/Shia conflict). In addition, Americans grant their women equal treatment and don't make up foolish excuses to stone them to death!
I suggest you (tyn2) think your argument through before making such large fallacies.

I hope you are not actually as stupid as you sound. Can you please explain why you think this line of thought is in anyway different from the terrorist "jihad" philosophy? You are talking about indiscriminate killing of innocent people for what you "think" is correct.
