Reports: Pakistan let Chinese inspect U.S. stealth copter

[Updated at 12:02 p.m.] Chinese military engineers likely got to examine the wreckage of the U.S. stealth helicopter that crashed during the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, according to news reports.

"We have reason to suspect China was given access, but we cannot confirm it definitively.  We have strong suspicions," a U.S. official told CNN.

Pakistani intelligence operatives likely gave the Chinese access to the wreckage, the New York Times reported, citing American officials and other intelligence sources.

The Chinese engineers were able to photograph the wreckage and take samples of the stealth skin that helps the chopper avoid radar detection, intelligence sources told the Financial Times.

When the aircraft crashed during the raid that killed the al Qaeda leader in May, Navy SEALs destroyed most of it to protect the technology. But the tail section remained mostly intact and it was that area that the Chinese engineers examined, according to the New York Times report.

U.S. intelligence is basing its opinion that the Chinese got access to the stealth copter on intercepted phone conversations, the Times reported.

A U.S. official says “we have reason to suspect China was given access but we cannot confirm it definitively. We have strong suspicions.”

Pakistani officials contacted by the New York Times refused comment on the matter. The Financial Times said a Pakistani official denied the accusations.

Both newspapers noted that China and Pakistan enjoy a longstanding military relationship.

The raid that killed bin Laden, staged without informing Pakistan, stoked tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan.

In July, the U.S. said it was withholding $800 million in aid to Pakistan.

"They've taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid which we're giving to the military, and we're trying to work through that," White House Chief of Staff William Daley said at the time.

What kills me is that jobs are uprooted here in the U.S. and sent to that communist country, those companies headquartered here are supporting communists. In my eyes, they are traitors! Citizens in our own country are loosing jobs, homes & livlihood due to cheap labor, we need to tell China to "F" off and bring those jobs back. Same with those jobs sent to India and Mexico, to hell with them. It's time for citizens to tell those running this country "Enough is Enough!" Stop selling out the U.S.!

I agree with your statement but that is how capitalism works. If these greedy corporations want to get their products made in China and shipped back to the USA for cheaper than what it would cost to make them here what do you think they're going to do? The government cannot tell these greedy pigs how to run their business.

Doesn't anybody remember just days after 9/11 India was telling us Bin Laden was either already in, or headed to Pakistan, and that Pakistan was part of this whole mess? It was dismissed as "rhetoric". India may be taking our jobs, but they sure have been more of a friend to us in terms of giving us the truth than any of our other so called allies.

What do you expect? China is the world's xerox machine. They steal whatever quality innovative products they can get their hands on and produce cheap, toxic knockoffs at a staggering pace. Then they manipulate their currency to make the junk even cheaper. They're getting away with it (and prospering from it), so how can you fault them.

I can't think of a single major invention that actually came from China. Even crab rangoon and fortune cookies aren't chinese! 😉

Anyone still think the Pakistanis are our allies?
We should do what we should have done on 9/12/2011 – treat them like the enemy they are:

    1. Cut off their military and civilain aid
    2. Ignore their airspace boundaries and attack militant hideouts at will
    3. Neutralize their Nuclear weapons facilities
    4. Put the hit on their nuclear scientists so they cannot continue to sell expertise to Iran, North Korea and other nutjob countries
    5. Ban all immigration by Pakistani nationals to the USA on any Visa

This country is our enemy and should be treated as one.

Pakistan's relationship with the Chinese military is only about giving whatever US hardware they can get their hands on, other than that, Pakistan has nothing in their FILTHY country the Chinese might want.

    • Just Facts!

Pakistan has very strategic importance for china. It provides Chinese a route to central Asia which is very important for next super power in making. Do a bit of research you will learn about all the activities of PLA in POK. Besides that Pakistan keeps India on it toes with the help all the aid that it receives from the USA, which turn out to be big favor to China.

Cut the aid and do it should have been done long ago. If it is determined that those terrorsit residing in Pakistan are found then we can take matters into our own hands like we did with OBL. We are wasting time and money dealing with such a two faced country.

Kind of scary that our tooth brushes are made in china, considering their pollution ridden processes including the heavy use of lead contaminants. Arg!!!!

Chinese didn't need the see much. They have already stolen most of the US military and technology secrets, either directly or from greedy stupid american workers. Learn Mandrin, it's closer than you think.

You're right: you can thank huge corporations like GE which are going into China and giving them all of our aviation technology. Supposedly its "civilian only" but there's not much of a difference between civilian flight management systems and military ones- ditto on engines. All for short-term profits. Thanks Jeff Immelt!

Very true. Except they are not getting it from workers. They get it from politicians and CEOs.
