Reports: Pakistan let Chinese inspect U.S. stealth copter

[Updated at 12:02 p.m.] Chinese military engineers likely got to examine the wreckage of the U.S. stealth helicopter that crashed during the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, according to news reports.

"We have reason to suspect China was given access, but we cannot confirm it definitively.  We have strong suspicions," a U.S. official told CNN.

Pakistani intelligence operatives likely gave the Chinese access to the wreckage, the New York Times reported, citing American officials and other intelligence sources.

The Chinese engineers were able to photograph the wreckage and take samples of the stealth skin that helps the chopper avoid radar detection, intelligence sources told the Financial Times.

When the aircraft crashed during the raid that killed the al Qaeda leader in May, Navy SEALs destroyed most of it to protect the technology. But the tail section remained mostly intact and it was that area that the Chinese engineers examined, according to the New York Times report.

U.S. intelligence is basing its opinion that the Chinese got access to the stealth copter on intercepted phone conversations, the Times reported.

A U.S. official says “we have reason to suspect China was given access but we cannot confirm it definitively. We have strong suspicions.”

Pakistani officials contacted by the New York Times refused comment on the matter. The Financial Times said a Pakistani official denied the accusations.

Both newspapers noted that China and Pakistan enjoy a longstanding military relationship.

The raid that killed bin Laden, staged without informing Pakistan, stoked tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan.

In July, the U.S. said it was withholding $800 million in aid to Pakistan.

"They've taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid which we're giving to the military, and we're trying to work through that," White House Chief of Staff William Daley said at the time.

They did try to clean it up as best they could at the time - hence blowing it up, you can't guarantee that the whole thing is going to be destroyed, and we didn't exactly get a ton of access later to clean it up.

Why do you criticize the troops? Until you have been in a firefight or in enemy territory with people who want you dead you should refrain from giving your opinion because it doesn't matter. Armchair quarterbacking has no honor.

why is this a big concern? China has been manufacturing many of our military products for years now, they have all the specs and blueprints for most of our defenses already. you know McCarthy is rolling over in his grave right now.

Reading this board, I am more than convinced that most people on this planet should culled. Most humans are no worse or better than parasites. The eat, the breed and make war with eachother and die. All for what. Earth no longer can support such destruction. This evil species (Christians and Muslims) should be drowned like rats and burried underground for fertilizer.

@TYN2isapig: The reason for people like TYN2 is government lies and propaganda, not to mention a steady stream of violent programing and drugs. Our world governments are the biggest Dr.Frankensteins around. It's sad. We will never see peace on this prison planet. Even if we oust every corrupt official in America we'd have to either ignore or oust all the other corrupt leaders.

They had two Black Hawks and two Chinooks. Does anybody think that the Chinooks were really stealth equiped? They evaded radar by jamming, not by using stealth. Who needs a stealth helicopter anyway?

Make no mistake China is overtaking America on almost every category. School in China is the biggest difference. The Youth have a geniune interest in getting grades and learning. In American typical teen interest is how many Level 80 WoW characters you have. Youth is the future... Unless we get the youth onboard the roles will be reveresed.

Nope I am a Proud american, but I am a realist. The youth in China take school MUCH more seriously on average. especially the Science Type subjects. Math scores are light years ahead of ours.

I have to disagree, because the smart kids in america are offered a better education and opportunities than the chinese can.

The chinese excel in math because Chinese/asians value education. That's why people say asians are smarter, it's because their parents force the kids to believe top scores are the only acceptable thing. The americans that are smart are kids who have something to prove, raised by a family that appreciates education, or are genetically wired to want to learn.

You take the average Chinese teen and pit them against the average American teen and you will see the difference. One of them will study hours on end for family honor. The other will doing his homework as fast as he can so he can do what he really wants to do. Sure our greatest colleges that take the top 1 percent teach a better corriculum but I'm talking about society as a whole.

@jon, the chinese gov't is taking education of their brightest children way beyond what our children are offered. They are recruiting our educators to teach in China.

    • jon

Yes while that is true. We can't change it, the youth have to make the choice themselves to excel. Also It's too late to convince the American teens today, but what we need is for the American parent to step up their act and teach their kids to value education.

The solution is very complicated. Some of it is deep rooted personal values, some are personal choices. But the parents have to own up to more responsibility. Maybe turn that Monday Night Football game off to ask Jr how school is going would be a good start.

I hate it when my parents ask me how school was and I hate football it causes brain damage and makes people stupid. Just to clear things up I'm a 14 year old A student in Cal.

@Redmond, you make a good point about the Chinese values of education. The key thing that the Chinese miss and are very far behind America is the ability to improvise, manage situations larger than what they have been trained for, and good old fashion ingenuity. The Chinese make great engineers but not great CEOs. This has been proven over and over in the business world, and their current economic practices right now may be gaining profits, however in the long term are dooming their economy, environment, and social structure of their society. All countries have problems. China has just as big of a problem as the US does.

Exactly Jon! That is why it is good for a father to ask, uncomfratable talks provoke effort to avoid them. But just to bring this to perspective, if a child brings home bad grades in china they don't just get labled a slacker and take away thier gameboy for a week. They get branded a failure, a mistake... shunned from the family for not upholding the family honor. That is tough, harsh love there.

Yaa I know most of my friends are asian anyway we always joke how A's are average to our parents.

Also as I said earlier the teen has to make the choice themselves to excel, the only reason why I said that aws because I made that choice when I was in 2nd grade. Parenting isn't the whole thing because I have a younger brother and sister. My brother wants to get A's like me, but struggles while it was easy for me. My sister doesn't appreciate education and only likes to shop. It's strange because we are both raise by the same parents, but value education differently things.

The only people I have classes with are honor students, so there isn't much I can do. Surprisingly though my honor classes contain many different students. For example my class laster year contained more than half the football team, yet they got all A's. My class also contained kids who played CoD, cussed, and you just wouldn't think of them being smart if you first met them. It's really surprising how stereotypical we are because some of the kids we stereotype are smarter than the ones we don't.
