Reports: Pakistan let Chinese inspect U.S. stealth copter

[Updated at 12:02 p.m.] Chinese military engineers likely got to examine the wreckage of the U.S. stealth helicopter that crashed during the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, according to news reports.

"We have reason to suspect China was given access, but we cannot confirm it definitively.  We have strong suspicions," a U.S. official told CNN.

Pakistani intelligence operatives likely gave the Chinese access to the wreckage, the New York Times reported, citing American officials and other intelligence sources.

The Chinese engineers were able to photograph the wreckage and take samples of the stealth skin that helps the chopper avoid radar detection, intelligence sources told the Financial Times.

When the aircraft crashed during the raid that killed the al Qaeda leader in May, Navy SEALs destroyed most of it to protect the technology. But the tail section remained mostly intact and it was that area that the Chinese engineers examined, according to the New York Times report.

U.S. intelligence is basing its opinion that the Chinese got access to the stealth copter on intercepted phone conversations, the Times reported.

A U.S. official says “we have reason to suspect China was given access but we cannot confirm it definitively. We have strong suspicions.”

Pakistani officials contacted by the New York Times refused comment on the matter. The Financial Times said a Pakistani official denied the accusations.

Both newspapers noted that China and Pakistan enjoy a longstanding military relationship.

The raid that killed bin Laden, staged without informing Pakistan, stoked tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan.

In July, the U.S. said it was withholding $800 million in aid to Pakistan.

"They've taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid which we're giving to the military, and we're trying to work through that," White House Chief of Staff William Daley said at the time.

The chinese are smart sobs, they are ravenous for techs and knowledge, I am not surprised growth on the tech front will come from china soon.

No growth comes from China, they allow others to spend millions on research and development and then steal the technology before the creator can recover their loss. They are toxic.

the question is, why did it crash? It's not like they were being shot at or anything, nobody knew they were coming. maybe those $5 billion copters are a little wonky?

The walls from the compound restricted its ability to lift. They wrote about it extensively !

Do you people ever think that the US Military might actually be intelligent? This helo is probably a decoy spray painted with something like Rhino Truck Bed Liner and spread around the global news as a top secret stealth model. Do you think you would have known within 24 hours that they lost a stealth helicopter, no way, no chance.

This was a fishing expedition to see if the "technology" would be traded to China. Sounds as if they caught exactly what they they were fishing for!

Actually Obama is stupid and selfish enough to leak this. Afterall the entire mission has pretty much been declassified because of Obama's mouth. Why would we want to setup Pakistan? What are we going to go to war with them? Doubt it!

@Chipper: Obama Biden.. I mean Osama Bin Laden was tossed into the Laurentian Abyss next to Megatron.. He is currently being reanimated by the friendly subterranean aliens from James Cameron's movie The Abyss.. You're right though.. Your leader has a BIG mouth and an even BIGGER ego.. Remember.. Pride comes before the fall. All living things answer to our creator.

We keep giving money to this country why?

We need to quit giving away our hard earned taxpayer dollars to other countries and then running our country on borrowed money.

PP, 中國技術正在崛起 This is not suprrising to see that China is taking another stab at our tecnology. Unfortuantly from some of the more intelligent comments above, there our some good points. We are falling behind in education, that is no secret and China will be the number one economic dominent role player in the not so diffrent future, that is a fact.

America needs to stop these senseless political grandstanding in the Afghan and Iraq wars inorder to rebuild our internal infrastructure, sad to say these efforts will have very little impact on building repore with these nations. If you look at history it will tell you these two in particullar have a long history of killing each other off from the inside, not to mention the drug trade and weapons caches that get moved around. I like to think positive but im a realist. I only call it how i see it. The scope of these two wars alone has cost the American tax payers billions in wasted dollars. Now our Military has to contend with a new restructure of modernizing the retirement system after everything is all said and done. Thanks Washington, yet again you continue to miss the mark!

Seriously Americans, what don't you get from Pakistan? You use their airbases for drone strikes, you have the largest presence of CIA personal on ground in a foreign country in Pakistan, you kill civilians in drone strikes with hardly a protest (fake at best) from your hand picked stooges in Pak Govt and Army, you get use of sea port and supply routes to Afghanistan, you get Intelligence cooperation, you get presence of 100,000 Pak army personnel on Afghanistan border, Pakistan loses Billions of dollars every year for your so called War on Terror, Pakistan has got itself into a civil war to fight your war. Seriously, how thankless can you be?
In return you accuse us of having harboured OBL? That's ridiculous!
It's time Pakistan started looking after its own interests in the region and said good bye to America's war!!
Oh, and please keep your aid with you that you give to your puppets in Pakistan. Pakistani civilians don't get it and they in fact despise it!

We have a policy called "No Child left Behind". It is like having a Welfare in Education where the Diploma is not worth the Paper it is printed on. We will have to get realistic and make our roots strong for the Tree to stand Strong and Tall.
The students who are not good in School education, should be trainned in multiple Vocational skills.

"U.S. intelligence is basing its opinion that the Chinese got access to the stealth copter on intercepted phone conversations" Interesting. Nice to know that the feds can just "intercept" any phone conversations they feel like.

Next, they'll be using OUR stealth technology against us to allow them to attack the US directly. Of course, they'll be stopping in Anchorage, Sacramento, Denver, etc. to get gas because they don't have too many refueling options.

And we will probably provide the gas via subsidy.
