Reports: Pakistan let Chinese inspect U.S. stealth copter

[Updated at 12:02 p.m.] Chinese military engineers likely got to examine the wreckage of the U.S. stealth helicopter that crashed during the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, according to news reports.

"We have reason to suspect China was given access, but we cannot confirm it definitively.  We have strong suspicions," a U.S. official told CNN.

Pakistani intelligence operatives likely gave the Chinese access to the wreckage, the New York Times reported, citing American officials and other intelligence sources.

The Chinese engineers were able to photograph the wreckage and take samples of the stealth skin that helps the chopper avoid radar detection, intelligence sources told the Financial Times.

When the aircraft crashed during the raid that killed the al Qaeda leader in May, Navy SEALs destroyed most of it to protect the technology. But the tail section remained mostly intact and it was that area that the Chinese engineers examined, according to the New York Times report.

U.S. intelligence is basing its opinion that the Chinese got access to the stealth copter on intercepted phone conversations, the Times reported.

A U.S. official says “we have reason to suspect China was given access but we cannot confirm it definitively. We have strong suspicions.”

Pakistani officials contacted by the New York Times refused comment on the matter. The Financial Times said a Pakistani official denied the accusations.

Both newspapers noted that China and Pakistan enjoy a longstanding military relationship.

The raid that killed bin Laden, staged without informing Pakistan, stoked tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan.

In July, the U.S. said it was withholding $800 million in aid to Pakistan.

"They've taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid which we're giving to the military, and we're trying to work through that," White House Chief of Staff William Daley said at the time.

So? We're a peaceful nation. We feed the world. We are caring people who police the globe... Mess with us and we will strike hard. War is the last thing we want. But you better beleive we have a blanket of security in place for inter-continental balistic missiles. China's infastructure would be destroyed in a matter of days! I.E. Libya... We're def not affraid of China. While their studying our weapons and trying to replicate, we're on to bigger and better things.

It's funny how people say.. THIS country and THAT country are responsible for the deaths of millions, when it really has little to do with the country, but with the religion that controls it all. Religion kills the most people in the world, not a country. The biggest problem we have is that religion seems to be unable to evolve and advance itself. The worst offenders- Islam and Christianity, can't seem to realize they are following books that were written thousands of years ago and were meant for a different time and place. I pray that humans can some day evolve from pathetic narrow- minded- animals.

I would not be against secretly organizing a mass raid of Pakistans nuclear storage facility and taking them all away. We're playing with fire here.

I Laugh every time it is reported America is "withholding" 800 million in military aid to Pakistan. That's such a small dent in the NINE and a HALF BILLION Islama Bama has promised them, no accounting or strings attached. We KNOW Pakistan is the enemy, and this only confirms it the more. Islama Bama don't you know that if you feed your enemies, they will devour you? JUST SAY NO TO FOREIGN AID!

Guess what, at least Obama withhold 800 million, but your Dubya gave them over 14 billions in aid, and did everything they wanted. You rethugs are the one's responsible for that. IDIOT.

Thats pathetic! lol You must be kidding. The innocent deaths in middle east due to bombing are roughly 80% from jihadists. The other 20% is from friendly fire which is absolutely understandable when a country is at war. The innocent lives dieing today are no where near how they were in ww2 or any other wars. Think about it, if this was like Vietnam half the population would be dead lol. Be happy that America has made improvements to their technology just to save lives. This is at the cost of jihad and in the end the blood will all be on their hands. There is no such thing as Christian terrorists but there does exist justice which will come to terrorists.

TYN2 – I really hope this post is sarcastic and you're not an idiot. Islamic jihad is not a response to anything external to their own religion. It is a philosphy of total submission to Muslim beliefs and an obsessive need to force the rest of us to conform.

The tail rotor section is the least important part of the stealth chopper. That's why more effort wasn't put into destroying that section. The US knows that. The Chinese already have a stealth helicopter of their own and would not have gleaned anything from the remains of this one...the tail section has been returned to the US.

I remember reading that the tail section fell on the other side of the wall, that's why they couldn't destroy it and the pakistanis got a hold of it.

China hasn't contributed crap to this world, not to mention US, except for silk and quasi-medical herbal wisdom. Their helicopter probably isn't stealthy as they'd like so they're double checking their work by looking at ours.

The generalizations here are absurd. I do not support jeehad, or can't even sell it but the point is, hens right about Christianity. The missionaries did have that point of view and did kill thousands. Does it make jehad right NO- but see both sides.

2nd. Fundamentalist Muslims exist like fundamentalist Christians. Not all one or one all.
Look at that pastor is florida that had a trial for the koran.. What kind of ignorant American garbage is that. Or anything fox news says about their perception of the world.. Makes americans look like gun totin hillbillies. George Bush relied on god more than actual forign policy- screwed the economy then they convince you to blame Obama.

Americans your puppets wake up. Walmart is not a solution to happiness.

I hope you find bliss in your ignorance. With some of the comments above I should be reporting you to the LIBRARY so you could read a book and become slightly educated.

Ok, good points. However, I have a real issue with one item here.

WalMart is the solution to happiness. If you ever went there on a nice warm day and saw all the little hotties running around in their slightly trashy skimpy summer wear you'd realize just how wonderful WalMart is. Where else can you buy some burgers for the grill, guns, and pick up a smokin' hot, kinda trashy honey? Long live WalMart!!

TYN2 said "America_is_responsible for way more human deaths than all the countries in the world combined. America was involved in almost all major wars in human history and it continues to be."

This statement is so ignorant it's hard to believe. The USA is only a little over 200 years old, and the Europeans and Asians were killing each other for many, many centuries before we were even known.

We only joined WWI after Germany was warned time and again to stop sinking our (neutral) ships and killing our people, and then threatened us via the Zimmerman telegram. We only joined WWII after we were attacked at Pearl Harbor and after Germany declared war on us. We led the coalition in Korea after North Korea invaded the South. Ditto for Iraq 1.

We may have killed a lot of people in those wars, but we started none of them. Keep in mind that you go to war to win (which we forgot in Vietnam), and as General Patton said you don't win a war by dying for your country, you win by making the other fellows die for their country.
