Lockdown at Santa Monica College lifted

[Updated at 7:27 p.m. ET] A lockdown imposed Tuesday on the campus of California's Santa Monica College after it received an unconfirmed report of a gunman on campus was lifted an hour later, a school spokesman said.

Santa Monica police said the college received a call late Tuesday morning that someone may have fired a gun on campus, and the school was locked down.

College spokesman Bruce Smith said the lockdown was lifted an hour later, at about 12:15 p.m. PT, after police did a "complete sweep of campus" and found nothing to verify the report.

Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis said it was believed a student on the phone with her mother heard loud construction sounds and mistook them for gunshots.

Just like the last one it will turn out to be a maintenance man with a rake, a stoner trying to hide his bong, or a guy with a tennis racket.

This whole "if there is any remote possibility that it could be a gun call the cops immediately" mentality has gotten way out of hand.

What if it is a deranged lunatic with a gun??? I bet the kids in Norway that were gunned down a couple of weeks ago wished someone had been able to lock down the island and take care of that nut-job with fewer if any victims.

Mkoid: at some point you have to stop jumping at your own shadow. Just because something bad happened once, years ago, does not mean that it is a regular occurrence worthy or constant paranoia.

McKracker: the deranged lunatic in Norway was dressed as a COP! do you call the cops when you see a cop walking around with a gun?

I wonder if you'd feel that way if someone you loved was there?

When we're talking life or death, it's best to err on the side of caution.

Yes Jackie I would, I felt the same way when the High School I attended was locked down 5 times in one year after those two morons in Columbine, and I still feel the same way now.

If I had a kid there, I'd much rather see an over-reaction at nothing than another VA Tech.

Okay Rob, if you saw someone in civillian clothes walking around the campus of a school with what you believe is a gun, what would you do? Nothing? Turn your head and look the other way?

Rob, you didn't read Jackie's comment. If you had a child in that school, you're saying you'd rather they just take their chances and hope it's nothing?

Stejo; take a second look and figure out if it is actually a gun or not, and if it is just a random indistinct bulge is someones pocket ignore it.

And his tombstone reads: Here lies Rob. Could still be alive today if someone had just reported what they thought to be a firearm. 🙁

And it just came over on another site, like every other time this happens, lockdown lifted because NOTHING was found to corroborate the call. Just a lot of people having their time wasted.

So I am either a troll or an idiot because I think people should assess what the actual risk is, not what the latest national news panic is

Welcome to the Paranoid States of America, where everyone who wears cloths is a terrorist, every loud noise is a gunshot, every long object someone is carrying or bulge in someones pocket is a gun and every backyard garden is a cartel pot farm.

You're an idiot because you think that something that hasn't happened already couldn't possibly happen again and that there is no cause for concern. By the way, a lockdown is exactly what you've just described Rob. An assessment of what the actual risk is... How f@#king stupid are you?

or 10000x more likely since like the one at Virginia tech recently nobody actually saw a gun, just something that "might" be a gun, or a bong, or a rake, maybe a TV remote, they do nothing, and nothing happens.

Situations like this should always be taken seriously and to see that there are such ignorant comments being made just goes to show the stupidity of some people in this country. With that being said- why dont all of the little children making obscene comments get off of the internet and go educate yourselves a little bit more. And yes, let the police do their job.
