Lockdown at Santa Monica College lifted

[Updated at 7:27 p.m. ET] A lockdown imposed Tuesday on the campus of California's Santa Monica College after it received an unconfirmed report of a gunman on campus was lifted an hour later, a school spokesman said.

Santa Monica police said the college received a call late Tuesday morning that someone may have fired a gun on campus, and the school was locked down.

College spokesman Bruce Smith said the lockdown was lifted an hour later, at about 12:15 p.m. PT, after police did a "complete sweep of campus" and found nothing to verify the report.

Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis said it was believed a student on the phone with her mother heard loud construction sounds and mistook them for gunshots.

This is why gun control should not be so restrictive. If I'm out and about, and someone starts shooting everyone up I bet the folks who push for such strong gun control would be happy to see me pull out my .45 to take out the shooter.

The people who do illegal activities with weapons usually obtain these weapons illegally. So having stronger gun control does NOTHING!

It is a well established fact that gun control laws only keep weapons out of the hands of law abiding citizens.

SM looked at the situation, assessed it, and closed the school.
    Turned out to be nothing.
    That's good.
    They did their jobs.

It is up to an individual to either listen or go out walking around with a potential gunman.
These policies are in place for a *reason*.
    That's your right, Rob.
    Go get shot.

This a little thing called vigilance. Stay aware of your surroundings, and if something seems out of the ordinary, you report it. I know if I were in that situation, I'd want someone to have my back.

  15. Jeff Frank ( R - Ohio ) "Lockdown?"

Lockdown, what is that anyways. Does that mean lock yourself in the room your currently in, so the "possible man with a gun as they put it", has a complete selection of stationary targets to choose from?
    I'd be 100 miles away...screw this !
