New fighter jet to bolster Russian air force

Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

hile we are embroiled in wars and military coflicts bleeding us of merican lives & national treasure that we now no longer possess. Countries like China, Russia & India without spending a dime or losing lives, are quietly working to extend their influence in regions where we are losing prestige, support & clout.
Quietly bolstering their military capabilities and eyeing the shifting balance of power.
what a mess we are making of our country & nation playing in the hands of self serving politicians & foreign lobbies.

Well said. The underlying story here besides continuous stealing by Russia of our high tech via patent espionage is the geopolitical alliances that are being formed. A joint stealth F-22 raptor developed with the Russians and INDIA, while we mess with a duplicitous nation like Pakistan?

more likely the Americans secretly gave the Russians and Indians the technology and design specs?

Looks sweet, but the A-10 is still the baddest plane on the planet.

Go Ugly Early and bring the steel rain!

The A-10 has it's purpose, and an awesome one at that, but it doesn't have the ability to outrun the T-50 and it's armaments. The Worthog is still an awesome plane but not the baddest.

From a Viper stick to a hog driver, your gun is awesome. Thank you for your service and sacrifice to our nation. Every hog driver I have ever met has used the term "went ugly early." I admit those birds are sweet in CASI but we can hold our own to. Though it is a shame, the USAF never trusted you with an afterburner. Ha, Ha! Check 12

cool paint job. maybe now we can let them police the world for a change. I was never really sure what we (US) needed stealth jets for... are we going to covertly invade countries? Well I guess the past 10 years answered that for me...

I now wonder why Russia is wasting money on this. What 3rd world countries are they planning on invading? Rebuilding the USSR?

Stealthy jets keep the planes from being shot out of the sky and make a bombing run undetectable until the bombs start blowing up giving the pilots time to get out of the area.

Yeah, just like Scarebus, they copied the US with the design. Come on, do something original for a change...

Why would they spend $6 billion to develop a stealth fighter when they could just buy 767s and turn off their transponders?

Turning off a planes transponder does nothing to hide it from radar. all a transponder does is broadcast a planes ID to airtraffic control and other aircraft in the area.

Way to go India and Russia....but i wish our politicians looked ahead and forged a similar partnership on clean energy, food security and space travel.

Shouldn't have a problem competing with our raptor since our raptors have never seen combat and are all still grounded.
Maybe we can buy some from the Russians on credit.

The A-10 is exclusively a ground attack aircraft. Although the A-10 is a formidable a/c, this and most every other fighter out there would have its way with it in a dogfight. Additionally, the A-10 is subsonic. On the good side, the Sukhoi T-50 won't stand a chance against the JSF.

Seriously...Keksi...India back Stabbed US??...Was'nt this "alliance" of Russians and Indians dated back to Cold War days...and US knew that already when they signed commercial Nuclear Deal with India and also when Indians agreed to Buy 10+ Boeing Poseidon Planes, 10+ C-17 Globemaster Planes and 10+ c130j super hercules...with cost of $11 billion or more where does this back stabbing comes from...Indians are buying both products from us and from them...

Looks like everything else out there. Big Whoop!
Unfortunately for us, our glorious leaders will probably be pushing for some new megaBillion defense infusion of cash to make some kind of response. God, the Russians are the last people we need to worry about right now.
