New fighter jet to bolster Russian air force

Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

😀 Pak-Fa is BEST 5th Gent Aircraft till date. My American Friends will tend to say F22 is the best m sure most of them are not aware that F 22 cannot release Weapons At Supersonic Speed it can release weapons only at Sub Sonic speeds but Pak Fa can, F22 was built keeping in mind that Future Wars will Be fought BVR (Beyond Visual Range) and rightly so but they fail to analyze What if a plane with same Stealth Capabilities came across it Say F22 came across Pak Fa that BVR combat due to stealth will Turn into VISUAL Range Combat and that where PAK Fa edges out F22 in term of capabilities and also will depend on Pilot skills. F22 takes 5 times more maintenance and is 3 times more costly then PAK- Fa. Having said that PAK-FA will only be commissioned in 2017 both in Russia and Indian Airforce so till date F22 is the No 1 Commissioned Plane. Not sure will stay there 4 long.:P

Actually, you have no idea what the capabilities or shortcomings of either plane are. Most of that information is classified. You don't know what you're talking about. Yeah, you've been exposed as a moron.

@David YOU r acting like a Pigeon who on seeing the Cat closes his eyes. The matter of the fact is F22 oxygen problems, it has high production and maintenance cost and it cannot release weapons at Supersonic speed and support my point its Ur Govt that has Stopped the production of F22 that's a fact.

This looks like the Russian/Indians took an F-15 and stealthed it up some. I don't know why anyone would say this looks like the YF-23...not even close. From this one shot it doesn't look particularly stealthy ventrally. I don't see the F-22 having any difficulties with this aircraft.

I saw no statements in this article that gave anything but information. For the record, the F-22 is as near to being invisible on military radar as an aircraft can get. History tells us that any aircraft Russia builds is very high maintenance and costly, with parts availability problems and their abilites were embarrassingly embellished and never lived up to expectations perfomance wise. Also, US fighter pilots reputation in their ulta high skills and training, make a lot of countries Air Forces pause on taking them on. In dog fights with Russian built fighters, going back to the Vietnam War, US Jets out performed in every aspect, including the F-4 Phantom which flew like a brick. SAMS' shot down more US Jets than Fighters did. And as for India gettng involved and their technology, just google what one of their telephone poles look like. And India is who gets called for US companies' technical customer support? Fear? Right. . . .

There is only one real way to settle this. Why don't we allow one pilot from each country, US And Russia, the best of each, fly the best plane each has to offer, and let them settle it over the Atlantic?

Then the Russians and Indians will STFU and finally realize they should have spent the money on their awfully poor and famished population instead of a stupid fighter they have no one to fight with against.

LOL it's like that Carly Simon song: "you're so vain, you probably think this song is about you."

Ever think that the intended mission of the T-50 might have absolutely nothing to do with dogfighting an American military aircraft?

when western pilots first got to fly the mig 29 when the iron curtain fell, they quickly realized it was a far superior plane, it was only western command and control via AWACS that gave us the advantage.

Hopefully it's mostly Russian technology with just some Indian money- the last time India (HAL) attempted to develop a 100% Indian aircraft, they spent 30 years and it crashed at the end of the runway. Indians are getting smart like the Chinese: lure in western companies via their money and then obtain the technology. Just like Tata (Mercedes), Maruti (Suzuki), Hero (Honda), Cadbury (Cadbury), etc.

For some idiotic reason we gave Pakistan, the country that hid Bin Laden and founded the Taliban, F-16s. India is making the right choice to have a counter to it, given Pakistan's continual historical aggression against India. I'll never understand why we didn't give the F-16s to India instead in the first place, they are a far better ally.

"Poor Russians?" – huh, I thought Russia now has the most billionaires in the world... am I missing something? Besides, why should U.S. be the only weapons sellers, it should not be dictated by the U.S. only, U.S. is always talking about Democratization and Capitalism yet when someone tries to enter the market that they've been enjoying total dominance, they say all kinds of stupid things like this. Stupid hamburger eating fat slobs...

Also- China unveiled its own fighter a few months ago and both Russia and China have border and waterway issues. India needs this as a counterweight to Pakistans F-16's and China's previously mentioned stealth fighter. It is also part of the further professinalisation of the Russian military- they are moving away from a conscript service and aiming for professional volunteers and their current crop of fighters have not been updated in 20+ years. Plus, a few of these roaring over Georgia or some other smaller state will probably make them think twice- a little psychological warfare too.

The real test of this fighter is in actual battle but chances of it going against either F22 or F35 are extremely remote to zero. But there is every possibility of this going against an F16 or Chinese J10 or a Pakistani Thunder is very high. In fact it may be pitted against the Chinese stealth fighter in development (probably in Pakistani hands). Then we will know which is superior aircraft. Until then we can only guess.

I during the Viet Nam war Vietcong soldiers would go deep into the jungle and start big fires, the American would send big bomber B-52s and carpet bomb the area, the problem was, there was nobody in the ground..
You don't need big and expensive airplanes to win..

Yeah, because Russians attack Americans in high-tech fighter jets like, all the time.

If this thing is ever in the sky with an F-22 at the same time, they'll probably be allies.

U.S. will always thinks it's superior to eveything that the world has to offer. Yet, it's becoming a collapsing empire like the Soviet Union, but will always scream "we're #1" at the top of their lungs. That's one of the symptoms of a loser...

keys to F-22, F-35, and other military vehicles = integrated warfighting with all the other F-22's, F-35's, and other military vehicles.

It looks like a regular russian fighter. I mean, it looks pretty cool, but until the elusive plasma stealth airbus bombs Beijing without being detected, I'd rather be in an F-22. I'm just sayin'!
