New fighter jet to bolster Russian air force

Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

The Russians have always made great fighter aircraft (MiG 29, Su 35). Its their in air tactics that have lacked.

And neither of these aircraft so called can catch up with the Disc that have been hovering over the US & Russia since 1947 or even earlier. Get your eyeballs open people! Do your homework and see how many times the silver Disc (UFO's) have been chased and suddenly these Disc do a 180 degree turn and go the other way just as fast. Should a Russian or even a US plane do that, the pilot would keep going in the original direction – the plane another in about two hundred pieces.

While it's true that US completed aircraft of this high-level technology long before Russia, let's not forget that Russians are very good at keeping secrets. Most people don't know that the Russian stealth project was started long before USA, but they never had enough cash to complete it. Only when India showed up and agreed to involve itself as a major player, was it possible to realize it in any viable way. You'd be surprised how many technologies were actually pioneered by Russians, but abandoned for various political and economical reasons. Even the Russian Akula subs are known to be the stealthiest and most silent in the world. Instead of underrating Russian/Indian products, let's count our blessings: being able to finance and expedite research and high IQ immigrants who added critical brain power to that same end.

@alexis, allright technically it was the Nazis who pioneered stealth aircraft (Horten Ho 229), but soon after the war the bounty of intelligent Nazi engineers & scientists were split up between USA and Russia. Many of these Nazi's offered themselves up in order to avoid death penalty and such sentences. It's a merely academical who of the two superpowers ensued first, at best they started it at the same time. The point remains, for lack of resources Russian projects were delayed.

Americans conveniently forget Russia beat America to the stars and put the first man in space. Americans needed nazis like von braun to help them build rockets to keep them from blowing up on the pad. America steals techmology from eveyone. Boeing stole jet airlines technology from the British when they first flew the Concorde. Ignorant comments here.

All countries steal if it's at all possible. Russian military hardware is mostly junk. Our tanks proved that in Desert Storm. I have seen Russian and Chinese military hardware up close. A high school shop class could build that garbage. As for the space program, When did the Russians land on the moon? Or the Chinese? America has set the pace for space exploration and will continue to do so with or with out the blessing of the short sighted nimrod in the white house. Go back to your coloring book now.

India, our supposed ally, is working with Russian on developing this while we worked our butts off to get them the nuclear deal. They even gave those contracts away to Russians and the $10 billion fighter jet to Europeans. Some back stabbers they are, not to mention they sided with Soviets during cold war and took millions of US jobs.

What it means is that if India is collaborating with Russia that means that Russia must be the enemy of India's enemies which are China and Pakistan. Sounds like India is planning something big. Guess what world, you won't be able to blame it on the USA when India retakes Pakistan and becomes bigger and stronger than China. All India is waiting for is the signal from the USA , that signal will be the removal of US troops from Afghanistan.

The Indians did not take millions of jobs. They cannot. The US govt. allowed greedy US corporations to send jobs to India. Be brave and blame your govt.
The US was trying to sell out- dated planes to India. Even the US airforce is phasing out these planes. Secondly US was not willing to transfer technology involved in the manufacture of these planes. The Eurofighter is more advanced than the US planes and the Europeans are willing to transfer technology to India. There may be many other reasons for buying the Eurofighter. This is not back stabbing, unless you have your own definition for back stabbing. You should reserve this term for the Pakis. This is called “doing business”. India did buy around $22 billions worth of military hardware recently from USA. India is likely to buy billions of dollars worth of military equipment in the near future from USA. India diversifies its military purchases. It continues to buy military hardware from USA, Russia, Israel, France, England, Germany, Canada and Sweden.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the rise of West happened with industrialization.
They colonized most part of the world and were able to sell of their goods that were mass produced and were cheaper. I am not a student of history, but I know for a fact, a lot of cotton weavers in India went out of jobs, because the mass produced in England worked out better from an economics point of view. It is something similar that is driving jobs out of the US and manufacturing and other services have shifted to China, India, Malaysia and other countries. We have come a full circle. I do not think that those who complain about jobs shifting out of US complain or even empathize with people of Asian countries who lost jobs during the colonization era. Infact, people in the West have reaped benefits of Industrialization for several decades at the cost of ppl from Asia. Complaining now about the idea, that brought prosperity to the Westis hypocritical.

No its because all the Asian nations cheat their currencies so the have a trade advantage with the west.
PS who is the worlds largest manufacturing nation...... It is still the good ole USA!

We took those jobs because we were better at it. The reason China and India(more specifically China) are taking American jobs is because our politicians gave them away with free trade agreements that benefit China much more than they benefit us. China is not better at manufacturing, they are only better at undercutting prices because they don't have to follow the laws that US companies do. I don't have anything against India, but China is a deceitful, backstabbing nation. The worst part is, most Americans are to stupid to realize China is already at war with us and their kicking our ass.

For all of you who believe they "stole the F-22" I have some new for you... The laws of aerodynamics and lifting surfaces are somewhat similar over Russia and America. Show me any modern fighter that does not look similar to every other fighter? Did you expect them to display a bi-plane with 5 engines blowing hot exhaust gasses out the front.

Steve you might want to do some research espionage and airplane design. Whenever a new US aircraft is produced, about 3-4 years later the Russians, Chinese, or any other country mysteriously comes out with a similar aircraft and design. It has nothing to do with aerodynamics, but is flat-out espionage. However, I will guarantee you the aircraft will not perform as well as the F-22 because they did not get all the secrets.

Hey Canuck get your facts straight, the US still has an F-22 program, we just aren't producing any more..at this time. The F-35 program hasn't been grounded, it's in the final phases before production roll out. Stick to the facts, consult a U.S. representative or better yet, stay up north.
