New fighter jet to bolster Russian air force

Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

Awesome, we fought and won a cold war based on economics and technology. So what do we do? We turn around and outsource our technological knowledge to India, and look what ends up in the hands of our former rivals with some collaboration from India.

    Job well done. :\

It uses the same engines as the Su-27, the Saturn AL-31. It's comparable to the F/A-18 hornet engine. Not the F-22.

US has worked with various countries to make the F-35 stealth multirole fighter. Russian has worked with India to make the T-50 stealth superiority fighter. Now they should all work together to make the sixth generation space fighters, before Earth gets taken over by angry space invaders.

2012 has already past on non-christian calendars. Christian idea of 2012 is not compatible with the end-of-world hype.

Isn't India the ally of USA? The Indians work in NASA and other US techno companies, and then use their expertise to work with the Russians? The USA gets taken for a ride again.

Regveg, 2012 for EOW is NOT a Christian idea. It is Hollywood's idea. There is nothing in the Bible about 2012 as the EOW. The Bible says that Jesus told his disciples that only GOD knows when is the EOW, and he warned that there will be many false prophets.

Mario, Indians at NASA are never allowed to do anything more than number crunching, even though they have far greater talents. It is these Indians that are being taken for a ride, as they do harder work while relatively underpaid and under-positioned. US hires people from the whole world, incl Europe and Russia. That's how it works, you take from the world and you're also supposed to give back. Who do you think Sikorsky, von Braun, etc. were? Most of those INdians anyway stay on and become US citizens. Anyway the Indians and Russians who made this stealth are homegrown and homebred, not former expats. You cannot just photocopy entire stealthjets, it take innovation no matter how much help you get.

2012 is a year on the christian calendar is what I meant.
I don't care about some false prophets, blahablahblah, total religious bullsh1t.
Every religion has this kind of self-important non sense, proclaiming they're the one and only, and others are the fraud.
It's just the church-corporation's way to keep their monopoly and gold flowing in, and putting blinkers on your eyes.
All the other religions do similar manipulation.

India army is perfectly united nation. It has full spectrum of tanks, jets, ships from all makers of all countries, with obviously China the only exception.
Good work, it get one more toy in its collection.

So you think we feed all of our population? in US gdss.. u can never feed every one .. priorities are different. Atleast they are not spending trillions in defence budget when we our economy, GDP going south and deficit going north..do we really need another million dollar plane? arent we the no.1 defense force in the world by a very very wide margin.. shouldnt we spending that money on schools and deficit?

NO wonder the Indian 3/4 of Indian population is in abject poverty! India is spending too much on arms.

@ mario : Buddy If you have neighbors like pakistan and china you have to spend on arms and defence even though most of the population is gripped by poverty. India was always a soviet ally but with time Russia split...INdias economy opened up..More trade with US/EU ... pakistan and us relations started spiralling down...And yea a lot of indians do work in NASA and techno companies .. but I dont think they go back and use the knowledge gained bcus hardly anyone goes back 😛

Andew, China is NOT the evil empire. The evil one who goes around killing and destroying is the USA. USA has been at war at any point in time, non-stop, since the WW2. WW2, then Korean War, then Vietnam war, wars in Central America, Iraq, Afghanistam, Libya, and a lot of other wars in between.

If Indians didn't spend so much on weapons (which by any measure is far less than other big nations) then India would have even greater poverty.

These weapons and high-level research & development are keeping safe from looters and also stimulate the industry. So all this flawed logic about weapons and not food is bullsh1t.

If you don't put fence around you're crop, you'll die of starvation.

Wow, one fighter jet and we're gettin arrogant already? When the Soviet Union – I'm sorry, that went bust. Whether Russia liked it or not – America is STILL the world's only superpower – fact. There are no more space shuttles – because we've developed the Orion to fly into deep space in 2013. And despite this pretty jet. The B52 Bomber, and the new DARPA that can fly anywhere in the world in less than an hour, is a continued to testament to America's superior technology. As far as borrowing money goes – It is the dollar that still is the only world reserve currency huh? Why not someone else's? Oh thats right, Our gross domestic product is still dozens of times larger than Russia, and China...combined. Get your facts straight.

      Which GDP? (nominal, percapita...)
If nominal, US 2010 GDP was 14,657,800 (mill US$), while China was 5,878,257 (mill US$).
So it's more like 2.5 times of China.
India was 1,537,966 (mill US$), so it's 2 times of China & India combined.

We do have stealth fighters. Two of them. The F-35 which is still in development and the F-22 which is likely superior to the Sukhoi T-50. But who knows, time will tell. Hopefully stealth war machines never have to go to battle against each other.

Beware. This plane is made with Chinese MELAMINE. Its prowess is the ability to dispose melamine bombs on your territory which would then inject melamine as protein masquerades into food sources. And to do it stealthily.
