New fighter jet to bolster Russian air force

Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

"US losing ground to India and China in mathematics, science": Obama

We've been losing ground to them for years...about 85% of the mechanical engineering department at my school is from either of these two nations.

I know the Russians aren't a slouch in warfare by any means but i'm still more concerned about the Chinese J-20.

The Russian-Indian stealth fighter is different from US stealth fighter (and the Chinese paper-dragon wanna-be stealth fighter), in the sense that it is available for export. USA doesn't even sell it's F-22 to it's dearest allies in Europe. Nobody wants the Chinese fake junk. Both Russia & India are space faring nations and have established a good name in the aerospace fields and co-developing cutting edge technologies such as thrust vectoring and moon exploration. Russians were the first to land a space craft with a robot on the moon, India was the first to discover water there. Beyond politics, I think we must accept cold war is over and Russia, India, USA, Europe must work together to contain the new threats: China, Islamic theocracies, neo-Fascism, corporate fraud, cyberwar, etc.

It's an awesome plane. Give credit where credit is due. Russians have always pioneered in Aerospace engineering. Most people don't know it was a Russian (Petr Ufimtsev) who pioneered modern stealth technology, and the Nazi before him (Horten Ho 229). Now they have partners like India. Remember Western nations also partners on big-ticket aerospace projects: Concorde, F-35 stealth jet, International space station, etc. All the jealous trolls need to burn up somewhere else. I can only image what great technology we would have if all these parties actually worked together instead of destroying each other and duplicating efforts.

Sounds nice and all, but the future is unmanned.

Actually the future is hybrid. Jets like these, with the option being manned or remote operated, much like any advanced machinery today

Decepticon. The Autobots always choose crappy hardware like GM cars.

The only thing the Indians must have contributed is the call centre operations for the onboard Onstar.

      Love the aesthetics and camo.

And about Israel, fighting against peasants and armies with antiquated weapons and lead by general who don't know the first thing about where the barrel of your guns should be pointed doesn't count.

Patent infringement anyone? I think Lockheed should sue Sukhoi for that design. Too many features resemble the F-22, just from the top profile alone.

The Su-50 will not have a lower radar cross section as the F-22 just by the fact of the housing of the engines alone not to mention no internally stored weapon systems which increase the radar cross section more then anything else. And you have to look at what are the avionics and computers that the Su-50 will have. Sorry Russia but it's still behind the F-22.

It never ceases to amaze me how these right-wing blowhards here litterally keep bragging themselves hoase over "American" superior technology. Do they know how much of it was actually stolen from Russia through the C.I.A. and our own military spies plus their highly paid military defectors? Whether they know or not, they don't want the rest of us to know and that's that in a nutshell!!!

Your response is just as partisan. If you want to get real about crap, the modern world is built on German innovation. Really, one German's innovation. By 1945, our destinies were set in stone.

von Braun looked as his options, and chose to surrender to the Americans and build rockets instead of being captured by the Soviets to mine gold. Just look at how well things worked out for Korolev.

All right. CNN, Fox, Discovery and others quietly hiding info about world's first airborn ESA-radar on MiG-31, your Link-16 was deployed to counter soviet fighter-to-fighter datalink and finally YaK-141's lifting drive adopted for F-35 (though Lockheed Martin honestly "co-operated" with Yakovlev in early 90's).

You guys use old Soviet 80's technologies just in a modern elementary base. Nothing else.

First stealth plane was German Ho-229. Inventor of modern stealth is Russian Pyotr Ufimtsev, accepted by Lockheed(F-22 maker).Only Russia has full stealth, from triangles, thru c-paints,plasma & e-cammo optical cloaks. It's no secret, enjoy watching Firefox (1982, ClintEastwood).
