New fighter jet to bolster Russian air force

Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

And yet people think we should cut spending on defense. Wow.

Handouts are far more important than defense.

All you hear about lately is Suklhoi, what ever happened to MiGs? My favorite Russian/Soviet jet was the MiG-19

Russians are too poor to develop their own they need India to fund their military. Eventually it's gonna fall in the hand of the Chinese, if this fighter is in anyway superior.

This is a great gift for Lockheed, whose F22 order keeps getting reduced. I wouldn't be surprised if they donated some old engines to get this thing up in the air and into the news!

Not good Morning BF, The learning for everyone in America is to understand were the $$ is going form there tax, hard work and talent. Its all going to BS Pakistan and Iraq. There is smelly ego pointing India and Russ... India gave $10 B work order to US ..7800 jobs. We should consider that.
What we are doing, making high tech equipment and donating to Pakistan....China is copying them and will use same against war.

I will say make this world safe and cool URI (USA..Russ...India) should come on one plan.

Kids future will be wonderful as it was ...2 cents

Sorry Pakistan, maybe you shouldn't have spit in the eye of the US when you let China look at the Stealth helicopter from the Osama raid. You did it while taking billions of aid dollars from the US. Now India, your long standing dreaded rival, is going to get a new fighter that will be better than what you've got. Time to run crying to China for help. US citizens should stop buying Chinese made goods and sending all of their money over there and hurt them as well while they build up a military and Stealth technology to go against the US while also owning them monetarily. It's a mad mad world.

      Ummm...Mousellini WAS a Socialist.

...and I'll bite on your other assertion. Black Liberation theology was founded out of the Socialist movement. Jeremiah Wright's church, the one that Obama attended for 20 years, is a Liberation theology church. Not saying Obama is a Socialist, but his constant references to "Social Justice" and the class warfare game he plays sure paint a picture.

Because dummy, if the shoe fits, you MUST be a socialist. So do you also support the Chinese owning most of our debt as well. I guess you also like the fact that we ship our jobs oversees because of rediculus demands that unions put on most manufacturing employers...

Don't fool yourselves about India and China, they both are WAY more adept than you are giving credit...especially China. They have rocketed out of the dark ages folks...their manufacturing capability is first in the world and they have the global economy to fuel far as sophistication, you are ignorant if you think the Chinese are not smart enough to build something world class...because they already have...

Chinese are good at mass scale manufacturing and reproducing/copying things, but their engineering is still far away from other nations like Germany, France, Italy, USA, India, Brazil and Israel. At my company we order cheap assembly components from China, nothing high tech. We have to do all the engineering either in US or Germany, Chinese are such a mess delivering engineering. I hope that change in the future.

IMO the T-50 looks like a cross breed betwee the SU-33 and the F-22.
Anyway, I think the Russians are way late to the game. Even the US realizes that global warfare including air superiority is taking a turn where UAV are the future.
To have the most superior jet fighter in the sky is sooo 1980's!

It is more effective to have cheaper more expedable flying drones to do precision and quick response air strikes.
Yes the F22 and F35 will be around until the year 2030 or so but beyond that the skies will be filled by drones of all sorts and types.
So this T-50 will begin service when? 2016? and then become obsolete in 15 years?

It's like when the Russians copied the US space shuttle with its "Buran" (luckily it got shelved) when a few years later the US started to realize the shuttle program was inefficient to operate.

Its a known fact that Indians have an alliance with Russia. It is no quiet working. I guess you have not been up to date with current affairs for the past 50 years or so. Most of the Indian air force fleet is composed of Russian built aircrafts. Making remarks like India is secretly working with Russia only shows your ignorance. Maybe if you searched online for the Indian Armed Forces and read up a little bit about them, you'd come to know India's main military partner. This has nothing to do with being anti-US or anything.
