Sitter charged after taking baby on ride in back of pickup

A Florida babysitter was charged with child neglect after taking a baby in his stroller for a ride the bed of  a pickup.

According to 911 calls, several people contacted Daytona Beach police Wednesday when they saw the stroller in the back of the truck.

"It's not something you see every day," Daytona Beach police Chief Mike Chitwood told CNN affiliate WESH. "I hope they revoke her babysitting license for that. Would you want her watching your kid?"

The babysitter, Keyona Davis, 23, said in a court appearance Thursday that she had a firm grip on the stroller and that she did not realize her actions constituted neglect.

Davis' public defender had argued that the charge of child neglect was too harsh, as the baby was unharmed.

"It's only if the pickup crashes, the child will be injured or hurt," a public defender said in court.

Davis replied, "Exactly!"

Davis said she didn't realize that police would consider what she did as "negligent."

"It's not like they give you a handbook or anything," she said.

Davis was released from jail on her own recognizance. Police are still investigating the driver of the truck and the baby's mother.

this was pretty ignorant – or lacking sound judgment on her part – but on the whole the country is 'dumbing down' vey quickly.

I hope the kid was at least tethered with a dog leash around its neck.

You will have to admit that the legal profession is a constant source of entertainment, as evidenced by this statement:

Davis's public defender had argued that the charge of child neglect was too harsh, as the baby was unharmed.
"It's only if the pickup crashes, the child will be injured or hurt," a public defender said in court.

Equally idiotic is the statement from the defendant: "It's not like they give you a handbook or anything," she said.

Blame it on someone not giving you a handbook, because Lord knows the blame does not belong on you. "Stupid is as stupid does".

There is no way that baby could be driving that pickup without a seat belt. Especially if it was snowing. Wait.... What are we talking about?

This woman is guilty of being a moron that's for sure, if this truck was in any sort of accident that baby would have flown out like a rag doll strapped to the space shuttle. She would never watch either one of my two boy's that's for sure.

She needed a handbook to know the difference? Very ignorant on her part.

We didn't have seatbelts when I was a kid. What we had was Americans who cared about each other and proved it by how kindly we treated one another on the road. Such is not the case today. Your airbags cannot save you from yourelves.

"It's only if the truck crashes that the child would be hurt" says the public defender?!? Talk about idiots! That's the case for any child in ANY part of a vehicle, and failure to use a safety seat is considered endangerment and/or neglect! What the HELL was EITHER the sitter or the lawyer thinking? And a "firm grip" on the stroller!? Firm grips tend to let loose when you get slammed by another vehicle or run into a stationary object. The sitter deserves the Darwin Award, but not the poor child!

She's not sick and twisted nor was she out to hurt the baby. She is just ignorant. What do you expect out of the uneducated masses? I don't believe there was any ill intent here, just a dose of stupidity.

I guess maybe you (like the babysitter) don't realize that ignorance of the law is not an acceptable defense.

You just have to wonder how desperate some parents are to leave their child alone with someone who looks like that. Maybe they just couldn't trust pig-tailed 14 year old down the street with such an adult responsibility of taking care of a baby.

She's right, they don't give you a handbook for these sorts of things.... these sort of really obviously dangerous and blatantly stupid things because they shouldn't require a handbook.

Well, it doesn't surprise me at all that this happened in Florida. I know, I live there. No, not everyone here is as useless as dirt, but many are. I was walking through a South Florida grocery the other day, and I saw a Father pushing a cart, with his 3-year-old daughter following him, and she had a tight, clear plastic bag covering her entire face and head that she was playing with. This was a latin gentleman who couldn't seem to understand why I had stopped and was staring at them. Florida consistently wins the "Rudest Drivers in the USA" award from year to year, and it is well deserved. You can throw lit road flares out of your window and they still won't let you change lanes. The problem is, that rudeness is not confined to the road. Try shopping here and you will find out. Oh, by the way, we also kill EVERYBODY, so watch out.
