Two mauled in shark attacks off Russia's east coast

Swimming has been banned in the Sea of Japan off Russia's Far Eastern Primorye Territory after two shark attacks in the past week have left two people hospitalized, Russian media report.

The first attack occurred Wednesday when a 25-year-old man lost both arms up to the elbow, Pravda reported. He was hospitalized in serious condition but expected to survive, according to the report.

Witnesses said the shark was about 13 feet (4 meters) long with large fins, according to the Pravda report.

The second attack occurred in a nearby area Thursday when a 16-year-old boy suffered severe wounds to his legs, RIA Novosti reported. The boy was hospitalized in Vladivostok, the report said. The boy's diving suit prevented the shark from taking his legs, according to a Moscow Times report.

Authorities suspect the same shark was responsible for both attacks, according to the Pravda report.

Alexander Sokolovsky, a candidate of biological sciences at the Far Eastern Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Pravda that recent storms may have made the waters off Russia's eastern coast more desirable for sharks.

"After a typhoon, the waters here become even better for sharks. The sharks are very sensitive to ecology, but the water here is clear," Pravda quoted Sokolovsky as saying. "They come here for food. When there is a shortage of their common food - fish and squid - they swim here searching for bigger food - seals, for example. Maybe the shark took those two people for seals."

Great white sharks have been spotted in the region before, but these are the first attacks Sokolovsky has seen in 51 years in the area, according to Pravda.

Authorities were putting together a team to find and kill the suspect shark, according to the RIA Novosti report.

Two shark attacks have been reported in Seychelles recently, swimming have been closed and they are tracking down the sharks.

WOW, Viren did NOT ready the article! Neither attack was fatal! LOL!

I believe Viren was referring to a couple of different shark attacks, not the ones from the story.

Before you LOL at someone else's error...."ready the article"?
And this article wasn't about the attacks he was referring to. The ones he referred to were fatal attacks.

You obviously did not read Viren's response closely. Viren is referring to attacks in Seychelles.

I do not think that killing sharks is the solution, the contrary is an abuse. The ocean is their home and we are the invaders. Hunt is part of their nature. They are not killers!!!

Very well said. They should not kill this shark.

I agree Emelina, an animal that has shown repeated aggressive and violent behavior towards humans and poses a threat to innocent swimmers should be put down. Well said.

When is it their ocean? The ocean belongs to all creatures. May the strong survive. If we are stronger than a shark ... well that is they way it goes.

I completely agree!! The shark was hungry and mistook humans for seals. GW sharks don't like humans because we don't have that thick layer of fat and meat that seals have....notice how the shark attacked once and then swam away? If it had attacked a seal, the shark would've eaten every last bit.

I can completely understand and empathize with the two who were attacked, but revenge is not the answer. If it was the answer, then the sharks would be completely justified in attacking humans since humans kill thousands of sharks every year!

Some humans do have that thick layer of fat, but since they are rarely in the ocean they don't get eaten. Fat people seem to prefer Walmart instead.

Why kill the shark ? it is not going to develop a taste for human flesh sharks dont like the taste of humans. Just let the

shark be. It will eventually leave the area.

The general thought is that when a shark bites a human it's because it has mistaken the human for its normal food source. It makes sense because if the shark had like what he had just tasted he would have finished off both victims. Unfortunately for us, a nibble by shark standards can be catastrophic to a human. It makes no sense to start killing sharks, as the ocean is their territory. We need to remember that. Leave the shark alone.

Here we go again; the same human ignorance repeated over and over. Kill the shark for what purpose? Do they think this is the ONLY shark in the water? Do they think killing this one shark will prevent another attack or another? This isin't a difficult mystery to figure out. We as humans, whenever we enter the territory of another being, whether on land or water, and knowingly enter their territory, once your foot crosses that line, YOU and only YOU are responsible and you accept that responsiblity and accept that you could be attacked. The useless and senseless killing of animals who attack a human being for entering THEIR domain is not only stupid, and assinine, it solves nothing. If you don't want to take the chance of a shark encounter – swim in a pool; if you don't want to get attacked by a mountain lion, bear, whatever, stay out their territory. They were here first. We are the intruders. At the rate mankind is going, we won't have another living creature left on the earth...and pretty soon, the rate we're going, we'll wipe out our own kind too!

I'm so tired of hearing this. This particular shark has proven that it's a man eater, it's beyond naive to think that it shouldn't be put "out of commission". Culling one shark that's proven dangerous isn't going to upset the delicate ecology or whatever all these super hippies claim. It's not like they're starting an initiative to kill off every single shark in the area. How about some sympathy for your fellow man instead of a dangerous animal?

Steven – The problem is they WILL kill EVERY shark in the area regardless of whether or not it is the perp. It is a witch hunt plain and simple because people are IGNORANT. I am a certified diver for over 12 years and have dived with sharks several times and KNOW these fish are not senseless killers. If they were, I wouldn't be here.

Have you ever seen a sharks eyes? Dark lifeless eyes like a dolls eyes.
While swimming, if you see a shark, never show fear. If a shark bites you, laugh in his face.
Always swim with a four foot pole with you, but watch out, the shark may have a five foot pole.

This shark was only doing what it's been evolutionarily bred to do: hunt. It's this evolution that has made it one of the most dominant and artfully spectacular species our world has ever known. Don't kill this or ANY shark for maiming or killing another species that knowingly enters its territory.
