Libyan anchor waves gun on air, threatens to defend Gadhafi

An anchor giving the news this weekend on Libyan state television lifted a gun on air and warned rebels trying to oust Moammar Gadhafi that staffers at al-Libiyah would become martyrs if they had to.

Hala Misrati grabbed a handgun from the top of the anchor desk as news reports said that rebels were advancing toward the Libyan capital of Tripoli.

Al Jazeera English gave this translation: "With this weapon, I either kill or die today.

"You will not take al-Libiyah channel. You won't take Jamahiriyah channel, Shababiyah channel, Tripoli or all of Libya, and even those without a weapon are willing to be a shield in order to protect their colleagues at this channel. We are willing to become martyrs."

According to several reports, Misrati has been controversially outspoken about her support of Gadhafi. She previously reportedly referred to al Jazeera as "Swine Jazeera" and accused the news agency of killing its own employees and bombing its own offices.

The problem with removing a dictator is that we have no idea who is going to take his place. A known enemy is better than an unknown leader especially in the middle list.

The Libyan people have the French President to thank for their freedom. His leadership pushed the rest of the world to get involved and stop the killing of the civilians. Thank you for dragging us into doing the right thing.

Have you walked the streets of Libya? I do not understand why it;s a victory for the right wing, left wing, It;s given the Libyan people self determination for the first time in forty years. Whether they or friend or foe remains to be seen. I for one want to develop our energy resources so as not one American dollar goes to the mid-east.
It's is beyond my comprehensions why any politician would block the development of our own resources. Reasonable men energy and environmentalist can design way to uses our resources and protect the environment. We have to get rid of the extremist on the left and right and get to work putting Americans to work.

The idiot can't even handle the weapon correctly or safely, for that matter. She's more of a danger to herself than anyone else. Hope she gets caught and stands trial for helping to prop up a murdering dictator.

Looking at the way the woman was holding the firearm, I agree she is not used to them at all but there is a possibility that whilst she was "reading the news" that there were people off camera that knew how to use firearms and had them pointed at her..... to me that seems like a pretty plausible idea.

The war powers act needs to be repealed as the Presidents of the United States ignores it. Why have a law on the books if they are not going to respect the laws of the land. I support Obama in his decision to back the French President push to stop the killing of civilians. I do not support Mr. Obama ignoring congress. Our laws are there to curb abuse.

He not the first President to ignore it.

It is upsetting to me when any President of the United States voids the laws of our nation. I may agree with his actions but to ignore the laws and rule by one person will is changing the form of government from a democracy to a dictatorship. The congress has given free hands to Presidents because they are more interested in getting elected than doing the right thing. Rules and regulations are to originate in congress not the executive branch.
