Thousands share their quake experience

Less than an hour after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck near Washington, more than 10,000 people all over the East Coast posted comments on CNN.com. From Virginia to New York, to Toronto, Canada, the mild quake was far reaching prompting people to share their experiences.

Chazbow_DePew said, “People in central PA felt the quake.”

C Castine said, “I’m in the Pittsburgh area. The ground swayed for about 12 seconds. I’ve been living here 25 years and my parents have been here for most of their 55 years and this has never happened. Interested to learn more about this, especially after reading a similar sized quake hit southern Colorado this morning.”

Kim G said, “Felt it in Columbus, OH!”

Kim said, “We even felt it here at work in downtown Toronto.”

ME said, “Here in NYC, my whole desk was shaking. At first I just thought it was me and I was tired or dizzy. Then I composed myself and realized it was still shaking. Weird... I never felt an earthquake before.”

stephen merrick said, “Felt it in Kearny, NJ...thought I was imagining it...guess not.”

johann1965 said, “Madison, WI felt it.”

Erin and Angie said, “We felt a shake in the heart of West Virginia.”

Jen said, “Whole building shook in Greenville South Carolina.”

Eun said, “We felt in Chapel Hill, NC. That was weird.”

Don Rouleau said, “I live in the Lower Laurentians of Québec, Canada 45 miles north of Montreal and we felt a very good jolt for about 2 minutes here. Everything in the house was moving.”

Gail said, “Ithaca, NY...Building shook on East Hill, Cornell University.”

Chris said, “My dad has been using the threat of earthquakes to get me to move from Southern California back to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Guess that argument is null. He just called to let me know everybody was safe.”

Swolfe said, “It shook our house in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.”

Abby said, “I'm 11 and I live in Raleigh North Carolina my home and school just felt the quake. I was sitting at home and suddenly everything started to vibrate. I was freaked out even though it was just a tiny little tremor. I told my dad then called my mom who said that the same thing had just happened at our school!”

Conor said, “Felt it all the way in New Jersey. Creepy.”

Steve B said, “Felt it here in Baltimore... whole apartment building rocked and rolled, windows rattled, and I immediately knew what it was. Lasted perhaps 15-20 seconds... no damage noted...”

Franko Semanko said, “I'm working on the computer, the twins are in the living room, and then I felt the shaking, thinking it was just something else. As I watch the TV go back and forth, I second guess, is this an earthquake? Cornelius, NC- just a few miles north of Charlotte, NC.”

Dave from Huntersville responded, “Was wondering why some things were shaking ever so slightly in the house. I’m probably five miles from you.”

Lorena said, “In NYC on the 24th floor of a building and the entire floor shook....It was crazy and bought back memories of 9/11. I was sick to my stomach.”

Marta said, “Earthquake felt in RI. Friends and family felt it in Providence, Warwick, West Warwick and the State house was evacuated.”

Jenny said, “We felt it strongly in Alexandria, VA! The walls shook and the chairs in my office were bumping around along the floor. Our building briefly evacuated, but now it's business as usual.”

Chris said, “I live in Norfolk, VA in a high-rise apartment building. Shortly before 2 pm, I felt something strange happen, not quite a shaking but suddenly my wood furniture creaked, the plaster in the walls made noises, and I felt a force of some kind move through the apartment. I went out onto my balcony to look around outside, and others were out looking around, too. The thought of an earthquake ran through my mind but everything looked normal outside.”

Charges against Strauss-Kahn dropped

Jeffrey Toobin, a senior legal analyst for CNN and a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine, says that the dismissal of the Strauss-Kahn case leaves one question: What really happened? And he says it’s unlikely we’ll ever know. The dismissal he says explains that our legal system isn’t about “truth” as much as proof.

CNN.com readers had harsh words for both the housekeeper and Strauss-Kahn.

Deniselle said, “I believe she's a gold-digger and has done a great dis-service to other women who are true victims.”

Pierce said, “There is a problem in our country where a woman can accuse you of rape and lie about it, ruin your life and when she is found to be lying nothing happens to her. Like they say, there is nothing worse than a woman's scorn. Women are more ruthless than men.”

YummyYemmy responded, “There is no proof that this woman lied.”

Patricia2009 said, “I can't believe Cyrus Vance brought this case to trial. Let's see, she called her boyfriend in prison (where calls are taped) to tell him in effect that she hit the jackpot as the defendant is rich. Didn't she say to him, 'don't worry, I know what I'm doing. This guy is rich.' She said that she was once gang-raped in her country, but that turned out to be a lie. This has nothing to do with race. It has a lot to do with her lack of character.”

ugadog86 said, “Where does DSK go to get his job and reputation back?”

maruf82 said, “It’s a shame how rich powerful politicians can get away with such crime. No one needs to explain all the physical and medical evidence and the haste with which DSK fled. This guy already has a history too. Utter disgrace of the judicial system.”

ozziem said, “At a minimum, it seems, Strauss-Kahn behaved like a cad and a creep, but that is a moral, not legal, judgment. Mr. Toobin is correct that we will probably never know the truth, or at least facts, of the matter. Is it so that the accuser is lying? Possibly. Is it also true as Domique Strauss-Kahn contends that what happened was ‘consensual?’ Also possibly so. What we do know, for certain, is that Mr. Strauss-Kahn is a trash bag.”

burmafrd said, “This dirt bag had previous examples of sexual predatory actions which was why he was arrested in the first place; his previous history. Something that a lot of the media did not exactly mention; just like Toobin did not. This scum bag has been getting away with things for a long time.”

Other readers said they were discouraged about the U.S. justice system.

tms420 said, “Just shows you how another thing in this country is broken. Let’s see: the economy, the government and the justice system have all been corrupted by money and greed. Wonder who was paid off.”

Spaceman77 said, "’If we do not believe her beyond a reasonable doubt, we cannot ask a jury to do so.’ That wouldn't be the case if the suspect was not a powerful, rich and well connected man...”

jmp38 said, “This case provides a very disheartening view of our legal system. As an attorney, I think that the prosecutor's office should determine the merits of the case based on the credibility of the victim's account of the alleged assault, not on her overall credibility as a witness. This sounds to me like the district attorney's staff is too lazy or too stupid to put together a decent case and let the jury decide what the truth is, which is the way the system should work.”

Laughing in the face of a death threat

David Letterman spent a portion of his show making jokes about the death threat posed against him by a jihadist website that urged its American followers to kill the comedian. While the FBI is taking the threat seriously, Letterman is using it for new material.

Mainly CNN.com readers applauded his efforts and made their own wise cracks.

madhatter91 said, “Normally I don't [care] about him, but I've got to say, kudos Letterman for taking it in stride.”

AL00002002 responded, “We're laughing about this because it's funny, but it's also unsettling to think that there's people out there (i.e. practitioners of the religion of peace) that think they can make death threats and intimidate people whenever someone offends the ‘peaceful’ nature of the religion or 'profit.”

henshinagogo said, “Arab-American here. Was proud to see David stand up and laugh this off. We Muslims tolerate idiots such as this Jihadist no differently than how Americans tolerate their own born citizens who commit a crime (i.e we do not!). Race, religion, color has nothing to do with it. A wrong is a wrong. My friends and I love Letterman and love his sense of humor. Trust me, we joke about these terrorists, too.”

RUjokingIam said, “Top Ten Ways Terrorists will Kill David Letterman: 10. Watching reruns of ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians.’ 9. Hunting Trip with Dick Cheney 8. Exploding Cigar. 7. Send assassins to the ‘love nest.’ 6. Make him repeat old Top Ten lists. 5. Cast him in a new sitcom with Charlie Sheen. 4. A wardrobe malfunction involving Viagra & his zipper. 3. Forces him to sit through Larry King’s act. 2. Kidnap him, then tell him not to worry because: ‘President Bachman’s on the case!’ 1. New Executive Producer: Jay Leno.”

nightowl79 said, “Good job, Dave. It's time to stop cowering in the face of these threats and to stand up for your selves. How long is America going to huddle in a corner fearing these extremists?”

DAZYCUTTER4U said, “How many Jihadists does it take to screw in a light bulb? None, they prefer living in the dark. Why did the Jihadist cross the road? To plant an IED on the other side. Come on. You all can do much better than me. Post a few.”

butterwise responder, “Him: ‘Honey, you must practice Islam.’ Her: ‘Why do you say that?’ Him: ‘Because you're Jihadist thing I've ever seen!’"

Now, why has the middle of the Country been so hot this summer? And, why has a major earthquake hit in the middle of the KKK stronghold (Louisa County and Culpepper County in Virginia were where the KKK always held their grand rallies)? And, why is hurricane Irene headed right at South Carolina and Virginia??? Could it be that God is watching us after all? Could it be that Global Warming is for real? Could it be the Tea Party Headquarters??

Felt it in Columbus GA, on the 4th floor. We didn't know what was going on until we went online. It wasn't violent at all, but there was a definite wobble going on. We think it traveled down the huge fault line that bisects our state and runs right through our area.

  15. Paleo Geographer

Unfortunately the loony toons crew is right. Our nation's symbol is a bird of prey also known as the bald eagle. Paleontologists already know that birds descended from large ancient serpents known from dinosaurs. This would confirm at least one fact in the bible about a serpent's deception. Currently China is the descendant of the dragon empire and a dragon is a large serpent as well. The fact that the serpents have wings and feathers shows that the serpent feels he/she is some sort of angel. If you look at a map of our country starting at Louisiana and working up to Minnesota you will see the picture of a man with an anvil on his head. An old teacher of mine by the name of Drake (Drake is a variant of Draco or Dragon) used to call the man MIMAL but pronounced it "My Mole".. Seeing the serpent connection in China and our own country it's obvious to see why so many jobs are outsourced there and why our country is being set up to fail. We came from another place and are being tricked into staying here, but only the smart and strong will make it out. So when Adam was referring to "her not being here". He was speaking of his wife Eve.. If that is even her name. This place is full of lies and the anvil on MIMAL's head is used to signify that we've all been had. May god forgive us for listening to a dirty lying backstabbing conman. This is why all religions require a middleman. It's to keep us here with snakey snakerton.
