Jobs resigns as Apple CEO, to stay as chairman

[Updated at 6:57 p.m. ET] Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resigned and will be replaced by former Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, the company said late Wednesday. Jobs will stay on as Apple's chairman.

Apple made no mention of Jobs' health in its statement about the change, but Jobs alluded to it in the letter of resignation Jobs sent to Apple's board on Wednesday and later released publicly.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," wrote Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January. Cook has been filling in as the company's leader.

He made a total tech laggard (moi) become very comfortable in front of computers. Thanks for literally changing lives, Mr. Jobs. I'll always love Apple products.

Truly sad, but hey... he's done an amazing job of turning Apple around. I can only hope Tim Cook will not turn into another Amelio. That almost killed Apple. Steve, if you do, by some odd chance read this. Thank you and enjoy your retirement.

This is a sad day for sure. I hope Steve can fight his cancer for a long and productive life. I also feel a loss for the Apple Family, devotees of Apple products, our Country, and the entire tech industry as a whole.

II'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of Apple employees saddened by the news. Oh, wait. Those are the factory workers in China that now make Apple products. Steve Jobs is a modern day robber baron who could not care less for the American working man.
